Subject: Looking for advice on recreating terrain type

Hello everybody peeps,

This is a quick rendering of a Vue scene I'm working on. It's a recreation of Lake Melissani in Kefalonia. In the next post down, I've posted a photo I took when I visited the real thing.

You'll immediately see that the main difference is the cave walls. And that's pretty much what I'm posting here for... how can I better recreate that sedimentary stepped look on the walls?

You could try to use mix materials feature. But you will probably have to ameliorate the light, as you can see on your beautiful photo that the wall material are wall exposed to light . Just my opinion, ;=) Yves

YL : I did try with materials in the first place, thinking it would be easier to map an image and bumpmap to do the job, but as you'll see in the picture, some of those stepped edges where whole slabs have fallen away are in the order of several feet deep, so really it needs to be done with terrain rather than texture to convey that - but I really haven't been getting very satisfactory results, despite trying it by using an image for the terrain and even by physically drawing the slabs in the Vue terrain editor. I think it's a matter of technique - and mine isn't right! I was hoping someone might have had better luck doing something similar!

You probibly have to change the funtion on the terrain to a more square wave type pattern then turn that terrain sidways. Or cheat in that add blocky terrain parts to your existing terrain. Just small ones stick right on the walls of the bigger one. If you want perfect looking textures you have to use a bmp picture of the rock, Your going to need a really big picture. Or again cheat and use one for the big terrrain and a different one on the smallish blocks you added above. Other idea get the rock on a picture then import it for the terrain height map. As long as you change the function to a more squarish pattern it will work.
