Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 29 7:57 am)
LatexBard : I think some one got confused about your question. Poser has a limmit on how long a file name can be. I think its a left over from the original poser 1 being a MAC program or in some way it has to do with that. To fix it you have to shorten the name. I dont remember how many it is but its easy to figure out. So yes it a matter of not handleing long file names .
It will be OK if you change the name of the file that holds the references, but not the references themselves. If you have "sexbomb.cr2" pointing to "sexy.jpg" texture and "dynamite.obj", you can very well rename the cr2 to "Stallone.cr2" if you wish. Just don't change the name of the jpg and the obj that the cr2 file is referring to. I thing that "Schwartzenneger.cr2" may be out of the mamageable range for name length in Poser4. "Leonardo Di Capuccino .cr2" is out of the question. LOL Compiler
Mac file names were limited to 31 characters when Poser was created. It was Mac only at the time. The name length wasn't much of a limitation since PC owners were limited to the 8.3 format of DOS. 31 characters is really plenty unless you would name an outfit "My_Day_At_The_Office_Skirtsuit_With_Briefcase". If you have file names which are longer than this (I remember some of Symphony's textures overflowed), then simply shorten them. I suspect, however that your problem is too many files in a directory. Earlier versions of Poser have a limitation of 256 files in each category (Poses, Hair, Lights) and the closer you approach this limit, the shorter the visible names. Are you spending more time scrolling than creating? If bloat is your problem, then you have a few solutions. First, trim out the stuff you don't need. It isn't necessary to install everything and its fourteen cousins. Second, organize what you want to keep handy and installed. Poser 5 has nested folders and you can install to your heart's content by making sub-categories. PBoost will circumvent the file number limitation in earlier versions. Trimming and organizing is cheaper. Carolly
Oh, but there is a direct correlation between the length of filenames and the amount of folders. If you get over the max limit of 250 (255?), you see less of your filenames than is actually there. You can "treat the symptoms" by changing your filenames. However, it gets pretty hairy if you're down to 3-5 characters in a filename. You can fight bloat in many different ways. In the past I made a decision to dump all the Poser4 characters and stick with the Millennium figures. That bought me a month or so. In the end, PBooost was the ultimate answer.

In Poser 4 when I go into the libraries, sometimes the file name is to long for it to display. All I get is the thumbnail with no name under it. Is there a way to increase the horizontal size of the library view so that it will show longer file names? I hope this is not a stupid question.
