Subject: What's happening to the free stuff section?

Phantast ( ) posted Tue, 21 January 2003 at 1:54 AM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 11:39 AM

... it's becoming clogged up with pages of animations. Shouldn't they be in a gallery instead?

HaiGan ( ) posted Tue, 21 January 2003 at 2:07 AM

Oops. Partly my fault- in two instances, anyway. :8} If it's a problem I'll switch the previews to still images instead.

Nance ( ) posted Tue, 21 January 2003 at 3:01 AM

No, the gifs for the cat animations were quite appropriate (and very nice -- thankyouverymuch). I think Phantast was referring to fact that for some reason people have suddenly started posting their finished artwork in FreeStuff rather than in the Galleries.

I have been enjoying the animations, Thanks for posting them.

PabloS ( ) posted Tue, 21 January 2003 at 6:22 AM

I'm kinda with Phantast on this one. Animations need a central place but FreeStuff isn't the answer.

milamber42 ( ) posted Tue, 21 January 2003 at 6:47 AM

It would be nice to have an animation gallery where an animator could post a thumbnail/picture from the animaiton and some background/description of the animation (if needed/desired,etc). The gallery pages already have this function. All they need is to have a download button added to download the animation.

Then people can leave comments, compliments, suggestions, etc. for the animator.

It should not be too hard for the programmers to put together. It's already coded in other sections of the site. They just need to assemble the parts! :)

elgyfu ( ) posted Tue, 21 January 2003 at 6:59 AM

I second that - I am just beginning to learn about animation and would love to see other peoples' work.

dialyn ( ) posted Tue, 21 January 2003 at 7:17 AM

There are several threads on the animations going on in other forums (including the Community Ideas and Forum News - may take some searching, but they are there). The problem is not a lack of ability on the part of the programmers. Apparently, because animations are so much larger than a single graphic, that Renderosity could not accomodate their own gallery at this time so the solution, until a better one could be found, was to allow the animators to post in the Free Stuff section (so that the animation stays on the animators' server and not on the Renderosity's). Personally, I like seeing them. And they are easy enough to skip if you're not interested since they are marked "Animation" under the title. It doesn't appear to me that they are clogging anything...but that's just me.

PabloS ( ) posted Tue, 21 January 2003 at 7:25 AM

dialyn, Agree. I like seeing what folks are doing with animation. The point is to put the links in the gallery section, not FreeStuff.

dialyn ( ) posted Tue, 21 January 2003 at 7:28 AM

I understand that. I agree, it would be a good idea. I was just explaining what happened for those who missed the other discussions. I am assuming (optimist that I am) that they are still working on this.

Here's a link to the most recent of the threads in the Community Ideas Forum. You can see the dicussion that has gone on the past few months. It's agreed be everyone that an Animation Gallery in the Art Galleries is the best solution. However, the technologies involved in the Art Galleries would require some adaptation to accomodate what we'd like. That takes time (and $$$). The technology already existing in the Free Section accomplishes at least part of what we'd like (a central location to easily find animations) as is. This is a short term solution. Since all animations are stored off-site (and, as dialyn pointed out under one heading), there shouldn't be any impact on access to other Free Stuff.

It's not the biggest problem in the world is it? I find it more annoying when there's loads of great textures aand I'm too cheap to buy the original model or the model's only for Vickie lol. I'm with dialyn and pabloS, I like seeing the animations 'cause I've been trying out animation myself

Bobasaur ( ) posted Tue, 21 January 2003 at 10:08 AM

Hey mon1alpha, Please don't hesitate to post a link in the Animation Section

I think it's a good idea to use animated gifs when people are giving away animated pose files. It's more annoying to see all those same hair textures over and over again, but even then I can just ignore them if I've already seen them a few times, so it's no big deal. Another annoyance is when somebody posts 12 separate thumbnails in a row for similar tunic or dress textures by the same author, when 1 thumbnail would waste less space.

iggy23 ( ) posted Tue, 21 January 2003 at 5:58 PM

animgifs are ok, if they are absolutely necessary.. but spare a thought for those of us in the world still using dialup. it takes long enough to load each page as it is, without waiting 3 minutes for each anim to load too... :/

PabloS ( ) posted Tue, 21 January 2003 at 6:17 PM

"However, the technologies involved in the Art Galleries would require some adaptation to accomodate what we'd like." As an interim measure, couldn't they use a FreeStuff "template" and put it in the gallery for animations? How hard could that be?

Bobasaur ( ) posted Tue, 21 January 2003 at 8:32 PM

Apparently it's not something that can be quickly done.

Absolulutely, Bobasaur! This is an overwhelming victory considering the bandwidth problem - we can only hope that eventually animations may even be given their own catagory at the top of the page! (that was my Dr.Phil imitation.) cheers, - TJ

mon1alpha ( ) posted Wed, 22 January 2003 at 3:37 AM

I might do Bobasaur..it's just that my attempts at animation are a bit...well, they're not that good :)

Bobasaur ( ) posted Wed, 22 January 2003 at 7:13 PM

mon1alpha, If you're working on something and want feedback, there's a Work-In-Process category. You can post your link and add to the title, "W.I.P" (I've got a couple like that). In your description describe what you were attempting to do. You can then post here or in the 2D/3D Animation forum and ask for relevant feedback. If it's any encouragement, my visual aesthetic skills aren't that good either. However, they've gotten better over the years because of feedback from people who do have wonderful visual skills.

Bobasaur, This thing you did regarding a place to post animations has implications well beyond Poser. perhaps and actual galley (hosted on other sites of course will follow.) One of the mods on another forum is thinking of expanding his already well developed talents into animation. And I can see thay others are also starting to push themselves forward in animation due to your efforts. It appears that the stagnation in regards to animation is drawing to an end. I raise my glass to you! cheers, - TJ

Bobasaur ( ) posted Thu, 23 January 2003 at 11:35 PM

Thanks, but I can't claim credit for anything other than opening my big mouth a couple of times. However, I'm not one to turn down a glass offered freely... [grin]
