Here's one that stumps me. I found this model and converted it to every file format that Poser imports in an effort to eliminate this render problem I am getting.

When I render this model in "Firefly Production" with "smooth polygons" checked this is how it comes out.

I want to use it in a scene in which I plan to render in the best quality.

Any ideas as to what's going on here and how to correct it using the "smooth polygons" feature?

Your help is much appreciated.

There's no way around it. You'll have to disable "smooth polygons". It simply doesn't play well with some meshes. With the latest service release for P5, you can leave "smooth polygons" enabled in Render Options and disable it for a specific object from the object's Properties panel.
