THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Bryce 6 .....

Chrisdmd ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 12:06 PM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 8:24 PM

Is there any word on the next version of Bryce? Anyone hear about what the new features may be? If not, what do people want to see? I for one want Poser integration (like Vue has Mover), multipane view wouldn't hurt, and of course faster renderer. Thoughts?

Ornlu ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 2:54 PM

I for one want a renderer that supports radiosity! I know it can be faked, but the render times are obscene.

In a Corel "eNews" newsletter that I got a few days ago, it mentions: Corel DESIGNER 10 - February 2003 Corel Customer Reference Program - Winter 2003 Corel XMetaL 4 - Early 2003 Corel Painter 8 - Spring 2003 WordPerfect Office 2003 - Spring 2003 I interpret that to mean no new Bryce until summer, at the earliest.

I would pay good money for a bryce 6 that was identicle to Bryce 5 but had a faster render engine. is that to much to ask?

catlin_mc ( ) posted Wed, 29 January 2003 at 3:42 PM

This topic seems to come up at least once a week and we all say what we'd like to see. I just hope folk from Corel take a look in here sometimes and see what the users are saying. One thing I think everyone would like to see is the ability to export Bryce primitives that would solve so many of our modelling problems. Catlin

( I know it can be faked, but the render times are obscene ) Ornlu Add radiosiity and the render times will go from obscene, to totally ludicrous... Mall.. has the right idea, the render engine needs to be redone...without losing any of the quality.

Well, from what I've seen everybody in 3D field is trying to make an all-around program that will affordable. The direction that Poser 5 took seems to be the indicator. And, IINW, Truespace 6.5. So I hope we will see better modelling abilities, better lighting abilities and a better rendering engine.

That will be affordable. Sheesh.

Render times, schmender times. Even Lightwave renders slow, for good quality shots. Bryce 5 at least lets us pick how fast it renders, and Lightning rules!

Oh, so many wishes, so many rumors. We DO know (obviously) that Corel cut the prices on Bryce 5. This is usually done before a new version comes out. Or, did they do it to just try and keep Bryce in the public eye as other programs come out with newer versions? Especially in the light that now Vue and Truespace 6.5 will have Poser friendly attributes. Either way, I'm sure it was also done to increase revenue on their product. I got that Corel newsletter also, with no mention of Bryce I took that as "no new Bryce", period. That's just a paranoid feeling, though, lol. Corel has been going through a LOT of company re-arranging the past 6 months. They are REALLY concentrating on newer software, it seems. Financially, they've been better, and I think they are doing what any company would do; doing what they have to, to get as far back into the black as possible. Perhaps with all that, Bryce, a hobbyists narrow market 3D program, has taken a back seat? Theories, all theories. AgentSmith

... Poser friendly attributes.

I would love for Bryce 6 to improve in this area, as well.

Lol...the second most asked question right behind "how do I export?"

The only way the bryce render will get any faster is to Dump the current Erice wenger raytracer and install and modern day adaptive raytracer . BRYCE Raytraces ALL elements in its scenes including those element that DONT require rayrtacing, that being any NON reflective surface or NON refractive surface such as wood and stone. the problem is compounded exponetially when activate Volumetric lighting in bryce and makes volumetricly lit animations of any length almost impractical. Cinema4DXL uses an "Adaptive hybrid raytracer/ scanline renderer from Cebas. It determines what scene elements need raytracing and does NOTraytrace items that dont need it This simple scene( Pic) has one Volumetric visible spotlight and 2 fill lights and rendered in just over two minutes on my OLD 300MHZ MAC G3!! Adaptive raytracing is the only practical solution IMHO.

It appears that Electric Image Universe has even faster renderer, at least according to an article in Computer Arts magazine. Half the time taken by Cinema. Now, that's something I'd like to see in Bryce. :-)

I got the newsletter too. Sent back a comment about new bryce releases.

Pass no temptation lightly by, for one never knows when it may pass again!

Eugenius ( ) posted Thu, 30 January 2003 at 6:24 PM

I've sent two email to Corel: one to their technical dept with no reply and and another to their customer service dept, who replying telling me that they will send my questions to the technical dept, which of course sent me no replies. I am also on their news letter and no mention of Bryce 6...yet. Poser friendly attributes would be a good start.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Fri, 31 January 2003 at 2:16 AM

Would be a perfect start. Even if that was the ONLY new thing it did, lol. At least that would keep it in the game with Vue/Truespace.
