THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Ideas for February Challenge...

draculaz ( ) posted Sat, 08 February 2003 at 8:52 AM · edited Sun, 12 January 2025 at 5:46 PM

We hear a lot about Bryce 6 and when it's going to come out, we're all wondering whether our dedication and addiction to this application will continue in the future. So in the hope for that, and if FWTempest agrees, I would like to suggest the theme "God of Bryce" as February's Bryce Challenge. Basically what I have in mind is this: 1. A pure Bryce render with no serious postwork allowed. Signatures, titles, levels and colour manipulation for the image itself should be, but aside from that no touch ups or specifics should be allowed. 2. Purely Bryce, no models or meshes imported from other programs. 3. Idea behind it should stem out of Bryce as a deity, a chorus of emotions, passions and talent applauding the application that we all use. It doesn't need to be a person, but it certainly needs to put forth all the things the application can do. Whether you have a tree as an arm and a primitive as a leg, or simply choose to understand deity as a force, using bryce, is up to you. Basically the idea is that the challenge should incorporate all facets of Bryce (or rather whatever you find most interesting or unique about the program) and that it has to be presented in a 99% pure Bryce environment. Comments? Suggestions? Drac Let me know what you guys think of it :) Draculaz

Sounds good, one q though, texture imports allowed?

FWTempest ( ) posted Sat, 08 February 2003 at 9:21 AM

sounds good to me. I'm curious about your thoughts on importing images for the terrain editor and materials, too.

catlin_mc ( ) posted Sat, 08 February 2003 at 9:35 AM

Would using textures other than the original Bryce presets be allowed, even D/L ones? Catlin

draculaz ( ) posted Sat, 08 February 2003 at 10:39 AM

I think all tools that Bryce has (with the exception of model and mesh imports) should be used at their fullest. image and texture imports are allowed, unless FWTempest has an objection :)

FWTempest ( ) posted Sat, 08 February 2003 at 10:44 AM

no objection here... I was hoping that's what you would say

catlin_mc ( ) posted Sat, 08 February 2003 at 11:40 AM

Another queston - are we allowed to use models not made by ourselves? Catlin

draculaz ( ) posted Sat, 08 February 2003 at 12:26 PM

As long as they're Bryce-made, I don't think there should be a problem :)

sort of defeats the purpose then if we can import models. Then it is not your bryce diety but someone elses. I think if you allow any type of model imports, you'd have to allow ALL model imports. What if someone made an object out of 3ds imports and then exported it as an obp? Technically that is not a bryce model. I dunno, lets discuss.

Sounds good to me. Of course if you allow only Bryce made models of oneself you shut out a big part of Bryce users here.

well remember you do not have to be a killer modeler to win any of the challenges. Plus that's how you learn....

draculaz ( ) posted Sat, 08 February 2003 at 2:52 PM

I honestly don't think that importing models from other programs and apps would be useful for the challenge. And I'm shooting myself in the leg here too because I can't use Wings3D. So basically it's up to everyone's word that they haven't used a pure Bryce model. So let's leave it at this: If you really feel like importing a Bryce model, so be it. But the model has to be pure Bryce. I honestly doubt that many will need to import actual models from websites and what not when they can go ahead and do it themselves. The topic for the challenge isn't exactly on the top 10 google searches. Drac And again, this is open to discussion, but it's really up to you guys to decide what you'll do and the idea is to see exactly how good your Bryce skills are.

I hope this will all be written up again when the rules have been finally agreed upon, this is all slightly confusing at the moment, but a great subject matter :)

madmax_br5 ( ) posted Sat, 08 February 2003 at 3:49 PM

Yeah i agree with you on post #12 drac.

draculaz ( ) posted Sat, 08 February 2003 at 4:45 PM

I'll wait till tomorrow then repost it, Zanny :)

12 sounds good so far.

Ang25 ( ) posted Sat, 08 February 2003 at 5:52 PM

I'm all for no imports of premade stuff. I don't have a lot of experience at modeling but I like the idea of being the creator of my Bryce scene and its contents. Plus, I love building things :-) I think that using an image in the lattice or terrain editor to create an object should be allowed. Because that takes some skill at using bryce to make it happen. Can we use objects that we have previously made? Ok, I should go work on building a god. Angela

I'm for no mesh imports including Bryce imports. I'd even go so far as to say, "don't use the bryce objects included on the second CD". How will it look if the bryce god is actually michael with the wizards beard imported from poser along with a host of vicki angels? I've seen great characters done with metaballs. If I'm allowed to import I won't try to make one. Let's keep it bryce for this one.
