Subject: What about a hobbyist gallery ?

compiler ( ) posted Tue, 25 February 2003 at 1:20 PM · edited Sat, 11 January 2025 at 11:31 PM

I've posted this idea in the Poser forum and Dialyn wisely suggested I would post it here : I'm just a hobbyist, with no pretention to real Art. I understand it can be frustrating when you're looking for art to stumble upon some poor pic (such as mine for instance). But on the other hand, it is very intimidating for a button-presser like me to see some of the pics on the regular gallery : I always think "damn, I won't ever reach this mastery, so what's the point of posting ?" Why couldn't there be a gallery for us hobbyists to post to ? I mean, instead of polluting people with real artistic talent, I'd gladly agree to post on a hobbyist gallery, where the main goal would be to improve one's talent, not to reach the 20's. This way, people who would like to search for art would search the Poser gallery, while those seeking improvement and ideas would review, comment and post on the hobbyist gallery. I think this could solve part of the gallery vortex problem. What do you think ?

I like this idea (obviously) and hope it is given some consideration. Some of us are beyond the beginner stage, but are not artists and don't pretend to be. A hobbyist gallery might relieve some of the strain on the Poser gallery, and, perhaps, reduce some of the arguments about art versus non-art (nothing will eliminate the arguments but a reduction would be nice). Thank you for posting, compiler!

Fabulous idea! I agree. Also, Artists at heart with little or no talent (like me) would find a gallery like this one suggested a very comfortable place to post their art. I'm forever deleting stuff I have just uploaded for fear of ridicule. (Even though that rarely happens, most people here are too nice) But it would surely encourage more people to post their stuff.

I noticed the galleries are showing all the art again, so space does not seem to be limited to the 15-day rule anymore. So no problem there. Good idea!

Apparently that did cause a problem so now there is a 30-day limit. There are changes coming regarding viewing by genre. My problem is, I don't know what genre I would put my graphics in. :(

@dialyn...LOL....for those of us that are in the "whatever-happened-to-spring-to-mind" category....hmmmm? I know the feeling. ;)

While I like and support the idea of a hobbyist gallery, I don't think it'll help the "gallery vortex" I like to surf all the galleries at the same time, and the shear number of images a day is staggering. As for the different galleries themselves, I wish there was a way when uploading that you could check off boxes of all the software that was used in the piece. If you rendered in poser and touched up in photoshop, then you check both boxes. That way it would show up in the poser gallery as well as the 2D. I use poser to pose, 3d Max to render and photoshop to composite sometimes, so that image would show up in all three. I think then a sorting system could be much more viable and tailored to each users needs.

That's a great idea Dragontales. ;)

Well, they've changed the galleries to allow for a choice of software and/or genre but the categories are a little strange. What does "household" mean? And why do they have a genre for "pets" and not "animals?" I don't see any genre for some of my graphics. And since the Poser elite doesn't want my non-artistic efforts contaminating their gallery, I don't know where that leaves me. It's all getting very depressing.

Looks like they are still working on the genres. I hope this is a work in progress and they will look for feedback on categories.

we will be adding a hobbyist gallery before the end of the day. :) we also have some cleaning up to do with the genres since they were taken from the homepage genres. software will be changed to something else that better fits all the sections. this will be complete by the end of the day. so hang tight. thanks for the feedback tammy

Oh, I'm so glad. That makes all the difference to me and I think some others too. Many thanks.

See what posting an idea will do, Compiler? :) Good going.

What is the definition of Environment Genre? Would landscape fall into that or Nature?

not sure.... we are going to lump the environment into the Nature and add Nature/Landscape. thanks tammy

Ah, ok, cool!

ficticious ( ) posted Wed, 26 February 2003 at 8:57 PM

this'll be one of those galleries that probably won't ever exist. and incidently mods and admins, 3D Studio Max is not a "topic", but a "medium." Someone should invest in a dictionary instead of relying on Microsoft Word.

Grimtwist ( ) posted Wed, 26 February 2003 at 9:29 PM

Photoshop users can't get a gallery, but those who just want to screw around with Poser now have yet another place to do so. Yeah, great prioritizing, Rosity.

dialyn ( ) posted Wed, 26 February 2003 at 9:36 PM

The hobbyist gallery is not restricted to Poser, as far as I know. It's just a place for those of us who aren't beginners and not self-identified as artists to place our graphics. I'm sure if no one has an ongoing interest in it, then it will go away as an idea. If there are people who feel more comfortable posting in the hobbyists gallery then in the other galleries, what's the harm. It doesn't take away from your petition to get a Photoshop only gallery.
