Tonight is a sad night for me. It's a night I've come to realize that I'm going to be more or less distancing myself from Renderosity. Why? The reason is simple. It's gotten too big to be comfortable anymore. Instead of a graphic artists community, it seems like some giant corporate machine. Perhaps I'm just tired and punchy, but I definately feel that this place is not the same as when I joined two years ago. Nor is it merely the growing membership. That's a good thing. However unless one spends everyday on here, and many hours of that day, you no longer are a member, but a number. This can be seen very well in the galleries. Why, there's no point in even posting anything as it gets buried by TONS of images within no time. I'm not sitting here whining about not getting hits or comments, but just that I can't see the point of posting images anymore. I know many artists on here that one year ago, had a following of sorts, and gained new ones frequently. Those same artists have almost none of the hits that they used to. It's almost impossible to keep up. We all create art because it makes us happy, but for many of us, we also like to share that art and communicate with each other over it. Isn't that what art is about? I see Renderosity as a huge black vortex that takes images and quicky plummets them down the drain. There are other sites that don't suffer from this and I think that is where I'll go. I'm sad because I used to call this place home (at least in cyberspace). Am I the only one that feels this way? Please let me know. If so, I'll just go off quietly. Thanks for listening. Dragontales

With increase in member numbers comes the reality of higher volumes in the galleries, that just the fact of math. ;o( I can see where that can put a crunch on the mentality of this being a smaller, comfy site. IMHO, this is not a reason to NOT call this place home, but I will give you my suggestion that I give many members here who have problems in this area; post your artwork here, AND at other sites. Obviously, Renderosity doesn't want to lose its members, but I understand that a certain degree of interest must exsist in an artist in some way. (and there are many ways) I have found that if there is anything in myself lacking from the problem you are talking about, it can be solved by spreading my art around. Renderosity wants happy members, and we DO want to see your work, I wouldn't let high numbers get you down. Just...diversify. AgentSmith Bryce Mod

I believe every member here shares your view on the gallery vortex, dragontales. However, every time you yourself upload, you are also burying the image of the member before you. We are all part of that cycle.

Dragontales ( ) posted Tue, 25 February 2003 at 8:52 AM

True, but with a membership of 100,000 (I think that's the number I read) the ability to upload 3 images a day is significant. If that number were limited to 1 a day, I think the vortex would become more manageable. For that matter, if someone can churn out 3 GOOD images a day, they are a god as far as I'm concerned. My mood is somewhat better today, but I still say this system needs an overhaul. If nothing gets changed, it'll just get worse, and I think the membership revolving door will get worse as well.

Yes I agree with 1 image per day. It might make people think before they post.

Or, maybe 1 vote per gallery a day. I bet more people would be checking out different galleries just so they could get their vote fix, lol.

Or better yet, both. 1 upload per day, and 1 vote per gallery a day...;)

You know, I've never seen anyone opposed to the one pic per day idea. Why is it that Renderosity doesn't seem to want to do it? Can the moderator of this forum, or anyone else say what the reason is? I'd be very interested.

Oh...ya never know, this idea may already be in the works... Actually, the way you vote WILL be changing in the very near future. And, the 1 vote per gallery per 24 hour idea is being seriously considered. IMO, it makes great sense. AgentSmith

I think online communities suffer from the same situation as real communities. As they grow how do you keep the small town feel and friendliness. We are thinking about this very thing and how we might create this. I am sorry to hear you may be leaving us. Please check in - in a few months....you might see some desired improvements. thanks tammy

As I said earlier, I was in a bad mood that night, and was a bit frustrated, at a bunch of things (not just renderosity :) ) I still feel however that the gallery issue needs serious tweaking and am happy to hear that some changes are being considered and made. I'll be around for a while yet, although I am diversifying as suggested above. Thanks for the honest answers. Dragontales
