Subject: Problems with Daz's stuff , anyone else had this happen??

spyder97526 ( ) posted Mon, 03 March 2003 at 3:21 PM · edited Tue, 11 February 2025 at 6:57 AM

Ok, I got DAZ's Micheals changing fantasy suit, then figured why not? and got the 'Orc' addon for it, but Im having severe problems. Every time I try to change the fantasy suit over to the orc textures, its looking for a bum file, but since I have the pro pack with all the updated bells n whistles (sr3 etc, etc) I cant get the stupid thing to work right. When I try to use the MAT pose for the suit, either he comes out looking like a green and blue clown, or the mat's freeze up my comp and poser has to shut down. First off, has anyone else had this problem, and if so , how did you correct it, and secone, how can you change a jpg into a bum file?? Thanks for the help!!

I had no idea there was an Orc addon for MCFS. Are you sure that's what it's for, rather than a morph/texture pack for Michael? Anyway, if you need to convert .jpgs to .bum, load a primative prop, like the sphere from the default Props library. Go into the Materials editor, assign the .jpg version of the bump map(s) you'll need for the actual item. You'll get a dialogue box asking if you want to convert. Choose "yes," and you're good to go. If you'd mistakenly applied .jpg versions of bump maps, you may have to edit the MAT file (using something like Windows' NotePad) to change bump map references from the .jpg files to the correct .bmp files. This is very easy to do. Use the "find" feature in Notepad with keyword "bump" to quickly scroll through the file to find all references. Otherwise, you can use an image editing app to convert the .jpgs to .bmp files. Then, change the extension to .bum. That's about it. As I understand, ProPack doesn't need to convert to .bum. It reads .jpg bump maps just fine, so this is a strange problem you're having. Good luck, though! This isn't a problem with DAZ' stuff, technically speaking. If you disagree, I'd suggest writing to them directly.

There is an update at DAZ for Pro-Pack/P5 that sorts out that problem. Scroll to the bottom of the page and get it :) With regards to the green/blue look, make sure you are applying the correct MAT for the correct part of the suit, there are 2 items of clothing (main clothes, and accessories), MAT's orc armour1A and 1B are for the MCFS 1, and orc armour2 is for MCFS 2. Hopefully the update should sort it out.

OOps, my mistake re the update, that's just for the orc. To do the texture MAT's, just do as xoconostle suggests and find/replace .bum with .jpg

Jaager ( ) posted Mon, 03 March 2003 at 4:50 PM

Doesn't PPP use JPEG for bump textures? You have the bump.jpg - right? The simple fix is to open the P4 MAT, which is what you are using here, is a text editor. FIND = .bum REPLACE WITH = .jpg For this sort of product, there are usually duplicate MAT poses, one for P4 and one for PPP. The difference is essentially these bump formats. The preconversion of bump.jpg to bump.BUM described above is if you have P4, the bump is supplied as a .jpg and the MAT wants a *.BUM. Doing by hand, Poser 4 will convert after asking. From a MAT, it does not.

Does Daz have a place where they list their patches / updates? I know they do on the page for the individual product itself. However, I think it would be easier if they had one spot to go to instead of having to go back in, navigate to the product you bought, and scroll down looking for updtes for each and every individual product. Sorry, I'm in a whining mood. whine, whine, whine.

asp1vip, when you are in the DAZ store, click the question mark at the top of the screen, that will take you to their FAQ page, from where you can find a list of all available updates.

Yes they do. CLick on the question mark at the top right then click on 'Recent Updates' along the left...

oooh! Thank you!! (now how did I miss that?!?)

Yea, I've been having quite a few problems concerning jpg and bum files. I have gotten older files designed for poser4 (not the pro pack) and since I have pro pack installed I have had to hand edit either cr2's and or pp2's in order for them to work. I also tried converting the jpg's to a bum file but the pro pack "doesn't recognize the bum file you are attempting to load"... Maybe I should try reloading poser and the pro pack again.... Also, I tried looking for an update for the orc fantasy suit, but they apparently dont have one (yet). Raven, when yu apply the MAT files to the suit, shouldn't I have the 'MCFS1 body' selected before I try the MAT file? I do that, but still get the weird green and blue patches. I'll upload a picture of it as soon as I get home from work tonight to show what I mean... Thanks everyone

spyder97526 Let me know if you have anymore trouble with the orc mats for the MFCS .. the update should fix em just fine :) Feel free to message me and I will get you the file you need. And yes I created the orcs. xonostle .. There is a texture set for the changing suit for the michael and vicki orcs :) They can be used for other things very easily as well. They are just a worn texture set for something a little more reustic than the other texture sets that were out for the changing suits.

Spyder .. There is also a fix at the review that In Depth did of the orcs. It is located here http://www.critical-depth.com/reviews/daz3d/orc/orc-review.asp The link itself is a little bit past half way on the page. Hope that helps. I did the product when most stuff was still Poser 4 based and the MAT files were fairly new and mostly set up for Poser 4 from what I saw. The female orc suits and orc have both the Pro Pack and Poser 4 MAT files. Again, let me know if you have further problems.

you could grab a copy of CorrectReference by Hogwarden, it sorts out all incorrect texture references in one go saves you messing about with notepad.
