Subject: PISSED OFF CARRARA USER - NEWBIE

nemisis ( ) posted Tue, 16 May 2000 at 9:20 PM · edited Fri, 15 November 2024 at 8:46 AM

Am I the only one who finds this software a buggy piece of crap?? I really, really looked forward to using and learning this software. I was excited, I've even bought CARRARA Bible 1.0. So far I can't do anything for 5 minutes without the damn thing crashing. Put a plane into the assemble room (ok) add a shader (ok) try and add some wave modifier from the properties panel and CRASH!!! I can watch the hourglass stare me in the face for hours on end!!! The program is frozen at this point. I've given up counting the number of rendering errors I've had (using metacreations own software or D3D or OpenGL) Man am I pissed!!!! I have the patch from metacreations (1.0.1) and the latest drivers for my video card CREATIVE LABS 3D ANNIHALATOR PRO. Does anyone have an answer to get me going with this program, I feel it could and should be a marvelous piece of software.

I suspects that Metacreations tend to screw around with the products to get insurance payments for the false errors. Every series of their products always have errors. They want insurance to pay off some debts and especially the stock shares to keep the business going and profits. They could of detected the errors and fix it before they put their products on the market. If metacreations wanted us to have everything we need and our business. They would made plug-ins for Poser, Carrara, Bryce, and other products as a happy family. They do not give us piece of crap. They want other money than the amount we bought for their products. (ie,. insurance, stock, other monetary resources, and business plan to keep us buying their products) I bought Ray Dream 5.0. It is a okay program but had some crashes. I was never able to make a good movie from it. I bought Poser 4 and found out that it was not compatible with RDS 5.0. Only RDS 5.5 would work with Poser 4 but RDS 5.5 is not in market anymore. Carrara and Poser 4 is in the market right now. Carrara is like 6.0 to RDS but it is not capatible with poser 4. Metacreations won't make plug-ins for Poser 4 to work with RDS 5.0 or Carrara only RDS 5.5. MetaCreation released plug-ins for poser 3 to work with RDS 5.0. As you can see that they have business plan to keep us buying their products. They do not give a crap about our business. Why do we need to wait for the plug-ins everytime we bought their products? If they care about our business they would of have plug-ins made and put in softwares before. MetaCreations is a big pain in ass. :-) 3D Nut

Hi Clint, No I,m also on win98. Maybe it's an incompatability with my video card? I literally cannot import a file from the CD that came with the book without it crashing Carrara!!

Ah - OK. I dont have that CD...Maybe its the CD or files on the CD? Does Carrara run fine without trying to import the files? What type of video card/CPU and memory size do ya have?? Clint

I am on a Mac, and the only problem with crash's was with the tutorial files. The Carrera update fixed that. I can't begin to guess what goes on behind the scenes at Meta, but I believe there was a huge shake-up a while ago. Does'nt matter anymore since Meta sold all graphic products. I usually check to see what extra memory my system has and give Carrera everything it needs.

Unfortunately these crashes happen within the program itself. I sometimes cannot open Carrara files I have just created. The problems I stated above are independent of the CD. My video card is a Creative Labs Annihalator Pro DDR with 32 megs of RAM and my CPU is a PIII 450 O/Cl'ed to 558 Mhz with 128 megs of PC 133. This should be enough for Carrara???

dethblud ( ) posted Thu, 18 May 2000 at 11:46 AM

It could be things like issues with the fact that it's overclocked, or your processor might be happier with pc100 rather than pc133 depending on which version of the p3 you have, and what motherboard you have. It might also be a video card issue as well, but it's more likely that it's an issue with the processor or memory. Try running your processor at 450 and see if it is more stable.

Hi Nemisis, I agree with dethblud, when I run my O/Cl'ed celery to the max 466Mhz Poser runs like Sh$%!, if fact it is unustable, when I reduce the O/C speed to 450Mhz it's stable. I think this is something to do with memory access, possible a memory module is slighty damaged and pushing it to the max causes crashes. Try reducing by a few Mhz...it sucks I know but it may be the only way... PeACE, Good Luck, Tribe.

Thanks foe the tips, I'll give it a try.

nemisis ( ) posted Fri, 19 May 2000 at 11:39 AM

Hey Good News !!! I tried setting the CPU back to 450mhz, but that didn't help at all. So, I was going to reformat as a last resort but then thought I'd try removing some programs to see if that would help. I removed my Wacom Tablet software and IRQ program and what do you know but I can now do more things in Carrara without it crashing...or at least it doesn't crash were it used to!! I keep experimenting with this for awhile and if it works great, otherwise I will reformat. Thanks again!
