do a google for kaos-rhei. the derived images can be converted into a terrain or lattice or as a 2d image. you can also derive kaliedoscope like patterns by using various transparent primatives alone or in combination with your lense close to or inside the primatives. There's a lot more to it of course. For example, Vile made a telescope using the refractive properties in Bryce - You might want to check that out although his telescope wasn't fractal, the idea of refraction is interesting. There is also the chance that you could do something in the deep texture editor if you can find the formulas. do a google for mandelbroot sets or julia sets to see if you can find these formulas. (I havent tried this but it might work.)
Place a mirrored plane vertically in the middle of your scene, and turn it until it's just a straight line in the middle (see purple line in image).
Add a few objects on, say, the right side of the mirror. They will be reflected on the other side. It's very easy and fun. Not sure if this is what you're looking for.

There is a fractal forum here on renderosity. There are lots of free programs on the web and they have a list link in a recent posting. There is also a Fractal Gallery. You could look there for people doing the sort of thing you want to do and contact them. Most are very friendly folk. Good Luck.
Fractals will always amaze me!
Goofing around with multi-replicate can result in fractal type images. If it would allow for mathematical functions, then it would be able to produce true fractals. (Now if Bryce 6 ever comes out, that's a feature to consider.)
