THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: I presume they asked to see the meshes...

tuttle ( ) posted Mon, 10 March 2003 at 2:12 PM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 8:07 PM

My last offering was rejected 3:1 by the all-powerful Raph.com judges, but when I see the standard of stuff that's coming in now I can't really complain. Check this out... Yes, there are two suns, but that aside... Unbef***inglievable.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Mon, 10 March 2003 at 2:42 PM

Yup, Raph is the pinacle. Sorry to hear that. AS

...to put it mildly. Not that i complain about gallery criterias, but i dont think those guys like Bryce very much! And no offence to the people who have posted there, but not all of them are what i would consider "best"! Ive seen far better renders here in the Bryce community then some of the works accepted at Raph!

I'm new to this, and curious. Could you explain me a little better? Stefano

tuttle ( ) posted Mon, 10 March 2003 at 4:15 PM

You're right, Rochr, they really hate Bryce, and when you mention Poser... well, forget it. ;) And yes, some of the stuff is a bit dodgy, but because the galleries change so often you can find you're looking at stuff rendered in 1996 on a 32K pentium, which kind of skews the playing field! Doublecrash - www.raph.com is a gallery where they accept an average of 2 or 3 works a month for display (out of many hundreds). You submit, then a week later you get the results of the judges by e-mail. It's got some great images, but once you've looked it's pointless going back for about 6 months because they'll having nothing new. There are some great images now on kotapress.com BTW.

Ornlu ( ) posted Mon, 10 March 2003 at 5:07 PM

They just don't like to admit that a few talented bryce users can outdo thousands of mediocre max users =P. I am just kidding of course.. (maybe)

Ornlu ( ) posted Mon, 10 March 2003 at 5:08 PM

And, sorry for the double post but, that image does not look all that great to me... The lighting is way too thick, looks completely unnatural.. the lighting in general is synthetic looking, gah.

catlin_mc ( ) posted Mon, 10 March 2003 at 7:32 PM

I've never heard of this Ralf place before or kotapress. Have they been about for long? Cat

Ornlu ( ) posted Mon, 10 March 2003 at 9:48 PM

Apparently. =P their oldest image was rendered on a p70 with 32 mb of ram.

I wonder..about..hoo boy..a year and a half ago I ran across a Bryce site that did pics like that, had Seasonal awards (winter, spring, etc), and only about 2 years or so..the pics were fantastic, but could never find it again..off to check. Heck, it was one of the reasons I went for Bryce in the first place..;)

I think I might have seen that site too (or a very similar one). I recall seeing a Bryce picture of a dark lake, with steep cliffs and sun-rays in the distance and it was absolutely awesome. I think the URL may be on my old PC, so when I get a mo I'll go and check it out.

Incarnadine ( ) posted Tue, 11 March 2003 at 11:47 AM

I have looked through most of that site and you know what, in my opinion, most of it is awesomely well modelled. But, and here is the kicker, most of it doesn't soar, it is lifeless, without anything to bring it to life. Don't get me wrong, there are some truly good works of art. I saved copies of quite a few images to savour later. On the whole I got the feeling that most are portfolio shot, look how well I can model stuff pieces, not art! As you may infer, I much prefer the alive art works found here that in that temple to technique. Happy and proud to be HERE! Richard

AS, very rarely do I disagree with you, but in my opinion, unless you are talking technique I do not think they are. Richard

I should have put, the pinacle of 3D... And, even that is subjective. What I mean is, what one person will like another won't, but that is true with any art. As a whole...looking at the big picture...one of the pinacle's of 3D is photorealism, it has always been a re-ocurring benchmark, always will be. Not for everyone mind you, but it is the chant you hear in the background of 3D progression. Raph.com is a definite place to see some of this, especially in that first link given by tuttle. Raph is obviously a main place for people with high-end software, with a good chunk of it being beautiful technique driven art. And, we ourselves do that also...I know I'm a BIG criminal in that dept. So, I know I need to bring more life to my work than technique, it has been something I have always struggled with, even when I was working with pencil and paper. But, I also realize that the art I most respect (and envy) are the ones who take the most simple objects, scenes, or just some lines, and seem to make them come to life. That is and should always be the pinacle of ART. AgentSmith

*Footnotes; No offense to Raph.com, but they probably don't warm up to our software very well, they are most likely faster to accept something by Maya than Bryce. Mainly because of the old myth; if something costs more, it is better. I can't remember running over any art made by Bryce there, but, they do have a pic by Catharina Przezak, which was one of the main artists from here that was the first to put photo textures on Poser models. Her comment sections weren't completely filled people happy that she used Poser....course now I see she only has one pic left up... If anyone sees any stuff made with Bryce there, tell us about it. Btw, a GREAT 2D site (IMHO), is http://www.gfxartist.com/ There is some 3D work there, but it is mostly just people working with a 2D editor and a tablet. IMO, there you will find art that is alive. :o) Also, I've never kept a running list of the artists I like at Raph, but here are some that I could find; http://raph.com/3dartists/artgallery/ag-ap114.html (Stahlberg) http://raph.com/3dartists/artgallery/ag-ap141.html (Eni Oken) http://raph.com/3dartists/artgallery/ag-ap272.html (Daniel Robichaud) http://raph.com/3dartists/artgallery/ag-ap295.html (Hyung Jun Kim) http://raph.com/3dartists/artgallery/ag-ap273.html (Hubert J Daniel) http://raph.com/3dartists/artgallery/ag-ap65.html http://raph.com/3dartists/artgallery/ag-ap257.html http://raph.com/3dartists/artgallery/ag-ap267.html http://raph.com/3dartists/artgallery/ag-ap294.html http://raph.com/3dartists/artgallery/ag-ap287.html http://raph.com/3dartists/artgallery/ag-ap305.html http://raph.com/3dartists/artgallery/ag-ap136.html

Or Igor Posavec, one of the judges. I liked the fly modelled in Lightwave, but it's really 3D modelling that's awesome. I think that Andy Simmons beats almost all of them in the art department.

Agent Smith- Based on the benchmark of photorealism, I think you might be right. Thery do indeed have some of the best stuff in that regard. The catch there to me is, that if you want to be a photograph, then I will judge you as a photographer. And I would also like to point out that I have enjoyed many of your images as well. Yes sometimes we get a bit hooked into technical exploration, (who doesn't?) but that is not all you do (or have done!) and you do DO art as well in my opinion (and sometimes with an excellent humour)! Sorry about the rant. Richard

AgentSmith ( ) posted Tue, 11 March 2003 at 8:18 PM

Ah, I see no rant, you have a great point. Andy Simmons (hobbit) is THE reason I went ahead and bought Bryce. Well, that and I had also had found it online for $80, lol. If anyone here doesn't know about it, one of the best places for Bryce is "The Bryce Forum Gallery" http://www.watchfuleye.com/brycelobby.html Great place to submit your Bryce work. *note; as I have just recently found out, The Bryce Forum Gallery cannot link to your pics located here at Renderosity, they have to be located on a personal website. I'm looking into this, see if this can be corected/helped. AgentSmith

Yes, of course, it was Doublecrash's "Hommage to Glenn Gould" that made the Bryce Forum's select gallery. It's linked to his gallery here at Renderosity.

LOL...I spoke to soon, or to late. Yeah I had submitted some pics last week, and Bruce couldn't get them to work with any of the links, obviously that is has now been cleared up, within the past few days. So, nevermind, lol! AS

Ahhhh yes, one of my favorites, Karin Eszterh, wonderful Bryce artist.

Doublecrash ( ) posted Mon, 17 March 2003 at 4:01 AM

As you've already found, no problem for Bryce Forum to link here. And maybe you noticed that too, but, just in case: recently our pal Rochr performed a good harvest of Select Gallery Awards! I just saw that almost every pic he made lately got into the award gallery :) Thumbs up Rudolf! And Karin does indeed a wonderful, amazing work with Bryce. It's been quite a while since I saw her posting here (it was a wonderful "San Galgano Abbey")... hope she'll come back soon with another beauty. Stefano

AgentSmith ( ) posted Mon, 17 March 2003 at 4:45 AM

Yeah, Bruce (Bryce Forum Gallry) said he had trouble with the Renderosity links changing certain characters to %20 (or something like that) in whatever html editor he was using. He's definetly got it ironed out now, they work fine. AS
