One of the replies to our update yesterday asked a question that I wanted to address and not have buried under a days' worth of posts.

GraphicFoxx on 3/13/03 04:54 ASKED:

........BTW, any time frame for SR-3?

GraphicFoxx, SR3 is fairly close to being complete. But there are a couple of items that are still causing some difficulty that our engineering team in Germany have been working around the clock to resolve.

The problems may only take the rest of the month to fix - but it's possible it may take longer. So as soon as I hear updates that I feel are reliable for a timeline and specs of the SR3, I will definitely post and update for everyone.

Kind regards - Katherine

Yes, makes it easier to wait if you know for sure something is happening. Thank you! Marque

If a user may venture a guess here. The reason I suspect that a Mac OS isn't supported yet is that the plug in developers (i. e. faceroom, clothroom and hairroom ... were only supported in Windows and the originators have to translate for Mac OS, thus making the transition complicated and lengthy) CL, if I'm mistaken please correct me as this is just my interpretation on the situation. Hurray! SR-3 is coming! Thank you Katherine!

FishNose ( ) posted Thu, 13 March 2003 at 4:13 PM

I'm not too surprised that OS 9 won't be supported . It represents about 1% of the entire computer user population. OS X is at least about 5-8% or so.... :] Fish

mateo_sancarlos ( ) posted Thu, 13 March 2003 at 5:29 PM

OS X is now used by about 38% of Mac users vs. 60% for OS 9.x; the rest use 8.x or earlier. But since Apple no longer supports pre-OS X, vendors have added difficulty and expense in providing versions for unsupported OS. But it's a moot point. Since Daz Studio Base is free and is coming out before June, how many OS X users will admit they'll buy an unproven P5 beta instead of just downloading a freebie beta?

"I'm not too surprised that OS 9 won't be supported . It represents about 1% of the entire computer user population. OS X is at least about 5-8% or so..." Those figures for "computer users" include business offices which use the vast majority of computers in the world. If you examine the stats on hobbyists and amateur graphic artists, like most poser users, you find the statistics are very different. There was a poll done here last year that showed (IIRC) around 1/3 of the Poser users (who responded) were Mac users.

Can we by chance get some info on what will be addressed in the SR3 update? Thanks, Cherokee

andygraph ( ) posted Thu, 13 March 2003 at 6:24 PM

Attection please, i don't say about dont make a OS X version !! OS X its welcome ... i say only create a DUBBLE version on ONE CD: OS 9 OS X if the buyer is on OS 9 install Poser 5 for OS 9 if the buyer is on OS X install the POSER 5 on OS X simple and like to do ALL SOFTWARE HOUSE ABOUT THE 3D APPLICATIONS ON MACINTOSH !!! Adobe After Effect 5.5 is for OS 9 and OS X ... too ... Adobe ! ok curious labs ? ;-)

EricTorstenson ( ) posted Thu, 13 March 2003 at 7:04 PM

The problem has nothing to do with the installer. OS X is a whole new OS for the mac, requiring significantly different code. If CL were to do so, you would probably have wait many months (or years, depending on the size of that team in Germany) to see the first Mac CD. eric

Curious_Labs ( ) posted Thu, 13 March 2003 at 7:07 PM

Hi. Cherokee, I want to hold off telling you the items in SR3 for now. I've had too many experiences on service releases from other companies to know that nothing is confirmed until at final beta. I'm not trying to hold details back from anyone I just want to prevent placing expectations on some items if it is somehow different upon release.

Andygraph, I'm afraid my answer will not be a happy one to you (and others who don't want OS X) - but for reasons of cost, we had to choose one OS or the other. And because of Apple stance now, the either/or choice had to be OS X. I was talking with a Product Manager at Adobe who strongly feels Adobe will have no choice to but to have to develop this way on all products moving forward. I'm very sorry this is not happy news to you though.

Kind regards - Katherine

cherokee69 ( ) posted Thu, 13 March 2003 at 7:46 PM

Katherine, I understand so I won't push the issue like alot of other might. Just hope SR3 helps with rendering speed. Things I do in Poser 4 take forever in P5....that's the one reason I refrain from using P5. Thanks Cherokee

andygraph ( ) posted Thu, 13 March 2003 at 7:49 PM

This new will not to be bad only for the mac buyers of Poser 5... anyway thx for your answer King regards; Andygraph Andrea Mazzone Graphic Designer

Flash2000 ( ) posted Fri, 14 March 2003 at 2:23 AM

Hi! I am one the software engineers of the German Poser team. We have fixed many problems and are still working on some issues. SR3 will definitively include many improvements concerning stability, speed, and functionality. Katherine's guess seems o.k. to me: SR3 will show up a very few weeks from now. Of course, QA will have a deeper look at SR3 before launch. Please understand that I cannot go into details now. Gordon

c1rcle ( ) posted Fri, 14 March 2003 at 3:21 AM

Well this is good news for us PC Poser5 users :) Thank you Katherine & Gordon for letting us know SR3 is coming, I'm dying to know what the new release will fix but I can wait. It's really nice to see some names attached to Curious Labs announcements again :) Regards Rob

wolf359 ( ) posted Fri, 14 March 2003 at 6:43 AM

It's bad enough that poser 5 won Be be hardware accelerated with no open GL. why would would you want to run it in an OLD outdated operating system like MAC OS9 that cant even multtask 2 processes and one crashed application takes down the whole system??? Curious LABs is smart to adandon MAC OS9 particularly since Apple themselves no longer support it.

Hi everyone - I do not want to mislead anyone with an optimistic expectation of a few weeks as offered by Flash2000, especially if it ends up longer due to some of the issues that are still causing some troubles. Please do not rely on this time frame completely. I stated before that I do not want to post a date that can not be relied on 100%. I will keep you updated as we know more for certain. With kind regards - Katherine
