THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Copyright

I want to use the earth texture found at the Earth Observatory (see link), for my cover contest entry. I looked through the site and didn't find any copyright notice with the images. Has anyone here found out if we can use them commercially?

Not that I think I will win, I just saw Rochr's pic...yikes!

Thanks,

Doug

These images have been used for quite some time in the 3D community but that dosen't mean that it was legal so, if you have doubts write them here; eobmail@eodomo.gsfc.nasa.gov

GROINGRINDER ( ) posted Wed, 12 March 2003 at 1:41 AM

Yeah that blue marble is a great texture.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Wed, 12 March 2003 at 2:24 AM

I just got my clearance to download some of their giant (400mb) Blue Marble pics yesterday, this was part of their e-mail; ------------- For all non-private uses, the terms of use are as follows: 1) The imagery is free of licensing fees 2) NASA requires that they be provided a credit as the owners of the imagery. Beyond that, we request that you provide, if possible, a credit for the Earth Observatory team for developing the imagery, and include a URL (http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/) if feasible. Again, only NASA's credit is required. ------- So, there ya go AgentSmith

Still can't hurt to send an e-mail saying what you're gonna do with it, (they might get a kick out of it). AS

So are you going to download the 21K res version?

Oh, yes, going to get them all! See what Bryce does when I import THAT texture! (I better go buy more RAM, lol) AS

I think it'll crash. It already crashes when I try to copy-paste an 8K res image. I think a 21K image will be too much. even for bryce.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Wed, 12 March 2003 at 3:19 AM

We'll see, I've never really had any of these mysterious Bryce crashes, corrupted files, or missing material problems that others have had. So, I thought I would push my luck, lol. Oh, btw, I wouldn't ever copy/paste unless you absolutely have to, really taxes the PC. Yeah, I know you have a lot of memory/virtual, but I have found with Bryce going the way of least resistance is usually best. Copy/paste takes a lot longer on my pc than just loading does.

Yeah, and the copy part of copy/paste uses RAM.

Rayraz ( ) posted Wed, 12 March 2003 at 5:26 AM

I know, but when I've used PSP for two hours and I use Bryce again I'm still in copy/paste mode :)

pmoores ( ) posted Wed, 12 March 2003 at 11:19 AM

I seriously consider not using that file unless you got 512 megs ram, even then you likely wont have room for much else in scene. Course since your not likely rendering larger then 1600x1200 unless its a print job, youll be wasting memory and time with a 400 meg bmp file.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Wed, 12 March 2003 at 11:55 AM

Oh, I know. I'm basically getting it just to have it. I do have 512mb ram (and keep 512mb Virtual), I'm going to try it, just to see IF it can do it, and if so, how long it will take to import, lol. Besides, its been a while since I put my cable modem to the test, and my Bryce. Besides, I'm getting ready to trade in my two 256 sticks of ram in for one 512 stick, so I can later add two more. (oh, joy!) AS

Rayraz ( ) posted Wed, 12 March 2003 at 2:34 PM

you could also place the 512 stick next to the two 256 sticks. that gives you a total of 1024MB.

Oh, I'll definetly be doing that until I get more 512mb sticks. :OD

catlin_mc ( ) posted Wed, 12 March 2003 at 3:59 PM

I used them and I got 640mb ram and it crashed, but only once. When I defragged, and restarted it worked like a dream but I think Bryce has to have a clean uncluttered system to cope with the large file size. Cat

antevark ( ) posted Wed, 12 March 2003 at 6:55 PM

so.... u gonna post it up in freestuff?

GROINGRINDER ( ) posted Wed, 12 March 2003 at 7:19 PM

I've used the very hires one too and it crashed bryce.

Vile ( ) posted Wed, 12 March 2003 at 11:17 PM

Are you looking to do this?

AgentSmith ( ) posted Thu, 13 March 2003 at 1:38 AM

I love that pic. Well, they 118mb one loaded fine. I've got the 400mb one now, have to try it out, see what happens... (the land detail in those pics are so stupidly high, lol...)

TMGraphics ( ) posted Fri, 14 March 2003 at 8:47 AM

@Agent - Would the image size affect render time? Just curious. TMG

Rayraz ( ) posted Sat, 15 March 2003 at 12:45 AM

Image size starts to affect rendertime as soon as it doesn't fit in the RAM.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Sat, 15 March 2003 at 1:28 AM

The 118mb did. The render passes were slow, and I could hear the virtual ram being accessed. By the last pass, all was silent, but I'm sure the render time damage was done, lol. I'm sure Rayraz is WAY correct, there. One of my pet peeves with Bryce is that is uses pic files, uncompressed. So, if you load in a 800x600, photo pic that is a .jpg at 250kb, Bryce uses that image uncompressed, and suddenly it is 1.4mb. (or so) That's one thing I would like to see change in a new Bryce. someone start a thread: dreams for bryce 6

Rayraz ( ) posted Sat, 15 March 2003 at 1:39 AM

There have been many bryce6 wishlists and I already mailed the wishlist of over 40 people here to Conan Hunter when he probably still was working with bryce. Right now the wishlist has only one point: "exist" We don't know if there will ever be a bryce 6, because right now no-one is working on it and the people who'd like to work on it (like Doc Mojo and the people at Pandromeda) don't have the money to buy bryce from Corel.

i think u just hit on the point i dont want to start it: ppl would be yellin at me for "not reading previous posts on the subject" as i said; dreams being realistic, br6 probly aint gonna happen. i say we burn down corel HQ. Who's with me?

AgentSmith ( ) posted Sat, 15 March 2003 at 2:01 AM

Ah, it will happen. But, it could be a long time away, we just don't know. Yet, even if Bryce were to sit for many years, I believe somebody at some point will finally take it and progress it. Far too many people own some version of Bryce and have fond memories of it and MetaCreations. And, for it being a program that is a number of years old, it is still quite powerful. It'll happen. I hope it is ASAP, but even if not, I still believe one day... AS
