Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 29 7:57 am)
A common problem on 98, IIRC. There are lots of memory related issues with Poser when used on 98. 98 does not have a very good memory management system, which can cause all kinds of fun with Poser. I used to have the ever so nice Poser lockups, too. I got a new machine with more RAM and XP, and I've hardly had a single problem with Poser since then.
Coppula eam se non posit acceptera jocularum.
in most times, its a problem with win98 bad memory handling. had the same when i run my pc with win 98. Scine going with win xp nomore such problems. other thing is to reduce the texture to 2000x 2000 in a paintprogram. As long as you dont do very large renders, you wont see a big difference, but the smaller textures save much memory.( save your highres textures before reducing)
You dont have to go all the way to 2000 x 2000 . I would try it at 2500 or 3000 see if that works. There is a trick to reducing it to get the highest quaility you can. Convert it to a bmp or tiff and down size it in 200 increments. But thats only if your trying to get the best out of the texture. But mostly it depends upon what paint program you are useing some are definity better than others, especialy when it come to doing this.
It also seems Poser deals with the maps one at a time (with regards to memory usage) so will bog down on one big map but has no problem dealing with lots of smaller maps even if they add up to a larger size. So, if you can break your single material into multiple materials and use multiple, smaller, maps, you can often stay under the memory limits. (such as splitting a 3600x3600 map into four 1800x1800 maps)
Along the same lines, why does Poser 5 lock up when I render a Vicky 3 character with a 4000x4000 body texture map on my Windows 95 machine? I have 128M of RAM, a 100M hard drive, and my processor runs at 300Mhz. Why doesn't Poser work on my 7 year old operating system? And don't you dare suggest I upgrade my OS! I spend too much money at DAZ as it is. I can't afford to upgrade my computer also! I like staying in the 20th century. Windows 2000 and XP, with their "better memory management" and "less crashing" and "not based on DOS" features, just sacres me.

Hi thanks for all the help last time I had a problem, now when I apply a texture of more than 3500x3500 Poser locks up - just freezes. I have to 'end task' Poser program. Using P4.03 on Athlon 1.3gig with 640 mb PC133 ram. Windows 98 with a relatively fresh install and no problems yet. Lots of hard drive and video card is 64 mb. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. tantrikk
