Subject: Pose Packs - Good Value or Over-Priced?

moochie ( ) posted Sun, 23 March 2003 at 5:33 AM Ā· edited Thu, 09 January 2025 at 6:00 AM

I have a vested interest in asking, as my first ever commercial pack has just gone live at Daz. It's unusual in that it contains over 600 poses (500 of them are hd2 hand pose files) for the PT MilGirl. The hardest thing was deciding what to charge.

There are some excellent free packs on the net, but commercial sets can go for anything up to $30. I plumped for a figure below $10 but it was, in truth, a number plucked out of the air. Fundamentally, I don't believe posing a figure is as 'creative' an act as making a new model /morph/ set of textures, and the price should reflect that. So, if you will indulge me, I have a few questions:-
1..What's the best pose pack you own and what makes it the best?
2..Are pose packs generally over-priced?
3..Would a large pack of hand poses for Mike2, V2 or V3 be of any interest to you (priced below $10)?
4..Can you see a gap in the poses market? (I know I've got a nerve asking this question .. but you never know!!)

Thanks. Moochie.

  1. Yve standing sets for Mike and both Vickys are my most used coz they are standing poses i use to preview items and more importantly no details have been over looked so i don't see things like a shoulder with -300 twist in it LOL..for Images, Schlabbers stuff i use most for the same reason as above. 2. No i don't think so, for me its one of the hardest things to do, and by that i mean to do "right", like to get a natural look, there are lots of poses out there but few that achieve that status. 3.YES YES ;o) 4. YES YES LOL...every day poses and couple or group poses, i don't mean romantic i mean every day stuff like 2 couples at dinner, walking down the street, 4 folks in a car, barbeque, Mum and Dad cooking while kids play...the list is endless ;o) BTW i will be buying your set, the reason being the price is right for a set by someone i've never bought poses from before, hope you take that the right way ;o), i'm of the opinion that poser stuff is not like selling an "actual" item so you may as well sell loads cheap rather than a few expensive, not like we'll run out of stock ;o)........Steve

  1. The pose packs that I use most often are the Partial pose packs by whwhitney because I can put together an unlimited number of poses with them. 2. No, I make models, can make some textures, but poses for me are generally too much trouble to bother with. I own lots of pose packs. 3. Definitely. I was in fact looking for something like this last week. Different holding poses would be best. 4. Strangely enough, you'd think there would be a lot of fighting/wreestling/martial arts poses between two figures but there aren't. That's the biggest gap, I think. Your poses are an absolute bargain. I think 50 cents is a reasonable amount to charge for each good pose, and so I think you're seriously undercutting yourself. But hey, if it helps sales ;)

PeterWahoo ( ) posted Sun, 23 March 2003 at 8:25 AM

That is one excellent set, and it's a great price!!!!

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Sun, 23 March 2003 at 8:35 AM

Indeed the set looks nice. So I've bought it :o) Or at least I sent the money with Paypal... which means I won't get them untill tomorrow sigh but still. It looks like a REAL BARGAIN! and a great idea. I HATE posing hands.... so hard to get right. I wonder if they will work with the mill.. boys as well... but I'd expect them to, since they're basically the same mesh. Well...time will tell :o) Imagine me...eagerly waiting for a MONDAY! G

Ever since I got the chance to try this set out I have been using various elements from it on all my figures. This is one terrific set of poses and an absolute bargain at the price. Heck they will even work on posette, without too much bother.

I'm glad you wrote that...I bypassed this pose set because I haven't used the PT MilGirl. But if I can use it for other characters, I have to reevaluate my decision. Posing is hard to do well...I like taking advantage of the talent of others. This is a huge pack...seems well worth the price. Good job. :)

Dale B ( ) posted Sun, 23 March 2003 at 9:46 AM

This set is niiiiice... particularly since it is such a pita to get the hands set just right. Keep 'em coming!

Odyssey ( ) posted Sun, 23 March 2003 at 11:05 AM

I will also put your set in my basket. Hand posing is very difficult for me and I think it is a great idea to have done this set :o) I also would be interested in everyday couple poses for the charaters. There are lots to choose from if you want to make fantasy, but everyday thing is difficult to find :o) Elaine

SnowSultan ( ) posted Sun, 23 March 2003 at 11:12 AM

I didn't stop to think that the hand poses would work with other figures too...indeed, that is a good deal. :) Azl, if you still need fighting poses, you might want to take a lot at my Battle Bonanza pose collection. It's no longer in the Marketplace, but I'm still making it available via gift exchange. You can find the info on it on my homepage here. Thanks, and best of luck to you moochie in selling your hand set! SnowS

  1. I agree with azl - I love the partial pose packs. SnowSultan's Battle Poses were great. 2. Yes. I think there are some high quality packs out there that I'd be willing to buy, but as a general rule I don't buy things that can more or less be done within Poser. That means light packs for me too. Its my own personal thang. 3. Absolutely. I'm partial to partial poses, so I'd definately be interested in that. Sounds like I'm going against what I said in #2, but articulate hand Posing is rather hard to do. 4. That's why I got SnowSultan's Poses and the partial poses (with Poserstyle sub). There are a too many I'm too sexy for your screen ones. You're pack looks great and I think is a more than a fair price. Those hands look good. I don't have the Mill Girls, but wouldn't they work on Mill adults? Anyone experimented with this?

Shirtless ( ) posted Sun, 23 March 2003 at 11:24 AM

Strange the app we are talking about here is called Poser. The purpose of which is to pose so if you buy poses along with everything else what exactly is there left to do?

queri ( ) posted Sun, 23 March 2003 at 11:29 AM

I'm going to get the Mil Hand pack because Hand poses are the most difficult to do and often where the render fails or succeeds. I was hoping that you were going to do others-- Mike has almost none. Vicki has only one truly useful hand pack and it comes with marforno's Visafe et Formes. Graceful natural hand positions are impossible to find and very very necessary to complete a pose that I have maybe started from another-- one that has just grown or one that kinda appears magically. Please, please do more. Emily

azl ( ) posted Sun, 23 March 2003 at 11:42 AM

How do the hand poses from the moochie Milgirl poses work for the other figures? Are they acceptable?

steveshanks ( ) posted Sun, 23 March 2003 at 11:52 AM

Depends what you do with it Shirtless, my intention was to use poser figures as a virtual modeling agency, now in real life you wouldn't pose in your own dress (trust me i don't look good in a frock LOL) so i in effect hire in the models (poses , figures and characters)....Steve

moochie ( ) posted Sun, 23 March 2003 at 3:27 PM

Thanks for the feedback everyone. The MilGirl hand poses don't translate accurately for other figures .. in fact some pre-teen figures based on the MilGirl mesh don't take them well either .. it's all down to the JPs and lengthened fingers. The MilGirl hands are quite stubby compared with many models .. one of the reasons I was asking about interest in hand pose packs for the 'adult' models. But they do give you a starting point, I guess. The full-body poses, on the other hand (no pun intended), translate well for many figures, including Koshini, V3 and Mike2. V2 HATES them! Don't know why, lol! Moochie.

dialyn ( ) posted Sun, 23 March 2003 at 3:33 PM

Well, I know one of the best investments I made was Bloodsong's interlocking hand poses (along with her mini-tutorial on how to make my own poses using hers as a start)...so, yes, adult hand poses would be very helpful (I would say "handy" but that seems redundant). There are a lot of poses for fantasy and pin up type poses, but not so much for figures involved in real life activities like holding a book or reaching up in a cupward or picking up a glass. I'd sure be interested in those.

Netherworks ( ) posted Sun, 23 March 2003 at 6:52 PM

Moochie, I'll be the first in line to buy some Millenium Adult hand poses. But I think it's good that some of the less considered figures (Mil Boys & Girls, etc) are getting some support.

.

azl ( ) posted Sun, 23 March 2003 at 7:09 PM

Actually, Netherworks, doing a search on "Millenium Girl" produces 42 results in the Marketplace. Doing a search on "Millennium Girl" (with two "N's") produces a few more results as well. But I agree. You can never have too many products for some of the less-considered figures.

Schlabber ( ) posted Mon, 24 March 2003 at 3:40 PM

hmmm ... let me first answer your questions - then I'll go to soe more detailed things. 1. Well - the best pose pack I own is simply not interesting for me - I can do each pose (may it a single or a combined one) I desire in just a few minutes 2. Not so easy to answer - some 'yes', some 'no'. I get mad when I see a pose-pack like 20 poses for 15$. This can't be the way - sorry. If I look at my own pose-packs (let's say the last CD 'Collection'): around 5000 poses (1500 exclusive on this CD only) - 200 face-poses - 50 hand-poses (if I only look at the pose-like content) for 35 $. Well - I don't think that's too expensive - Please note: I don't want to advertise here - I'm just telling facts. If I look at the DAZ-platinum club: I would say around 30 or so poses for 2$ is also a price I would say that's OK. 3. No - 'cause I allready did that and put a few on my DAZ-CD (around 250) - but I think I'm not that typical buyer of poses-packs (lol) 4. A gap ?? Yes, of course !! The more people doing stuff - the more versatile it'll be - I did and I'm doing a lot of poses but these poses will always be typical me. Most people say they're very good but other people are doing other poses. I - FOR MYSELF - am not seeing a really gap 'cause I don't think I'll ever buy a pose-pack but as I said before - it's not me where poses-makers should focus on :o) So, OK - now to some other points: I don't think it's fair to do around 1000s (I never counted the whole amount of poses in total I did but I think it'll be some 1000s) of poses and leave the people in the world alone with all that pz2's - if you do such a thing you have to carry for the special needs of the buyers. One way is to name each pose very special (like 'body bended around by looking forward with right hand on left knee and looking sneaky by that') - uhm, you don't understand how that looks like ?? and btw. with an older poser you're limited with the amount of letters. So - I decided once to do something different: the poses-database. Even this is always soooo much work I don't want to miss these (it is included on each CD I did - one example here: http://www.schlabber.org/collection/collection/index.htm - please note again: I don't want to advertise - it's only to show a way to organise poses, hands, faces or mass-stuff in an user-friendly way) As you say, a picture says more than 1000 words and so the user can decide what 'base-pose' (yes, every pose can only be a base-pose in my eyes - you have to trim it to your needs) he/she choose. I really would liked to have such a thing for the P5-poses but there were waaay to less time to do it by developing the poses-content (same as for sooo many things in Poser 5 - but that's another story) Steve: have a look at the DAZ-CD you own - there are many handposes ;o) - For the V3-hand-poses ... uhm, well - won't tell here ... lol. Something for partial pose sets - as they're mentioned here. I think that's the wrong way - a pose is always a poetry of the whole body. For most situations you move your whole body to do a special thing (thing about reaching out for something - it looks very different if you reach out from a sitting - or a standing position) - there are a few exceptions (e. g. changing your legs by writing on a keyboard) - but those are not many. But well, I'm might thinking too much in an art-way by that. For the poses in general: - P4 - poses CAN be used for Millenium-figures as a base - the whole Millenium-family has the same joints - so the poses ARE very similar for that characters - this will mean if a pose is working for Vicky - it is very possible it is working basically for the Millenium-girl (some minor tweakings might be necessary) Whoops - wrote a lot ... one final statement : I'm unsure - but I think if you're asking for a vendor-product this should belong in another forum (maybe off-topic OT) - but as the mods left it here - it is allright :o) Happy posing Schlabber
