Subject: Need help, catastrophic failure!

Okay, here's what's happened. Something terribly wrong has happened to Poser 4. Upon attempting to open any of my previously saved projects, I get a vast number of error messages claiming that it can't find any of my textures, .obj files, anything. In hopes that it was a program error, I attempted to uninstall it with the intention of reinstalling it. It told me that it can't find the installation log either, and refused to allow me to uninstall. Has something horrible just happened to me specifically, or what?

Okay, a quick clarification of my own post. Error messages do not claim that they can't FIND the files, just that they can't OPEN them. If that changes anything. Hate!

Sounds a bit like Poser or some part of it has been moved, so the references (to files in Runtime for instance) are wrong. The uninstall not working also sounds like something has been moved. Have you changed anything on your system recently? Or installed some kind of utility? Deleted something by mistake? Renamed the Poser folder or the Runtime folder? Done a backup restore? Upgraded Windows or reinstalled it? :] Fish

Can you do a system restore before you start deleting things? Sharen

No, I haven't changed a thing. In fact, just to make sure, I actually phsyically went into each and every one of the folders where my supposedly unopenable files are, and made sure that they were there, and intact. Despite this, apparently Poser doesn't seem to recognise them in any way, shape, or form. I have absolutely no idea what the hell I'm supposed to do. On a related note, by going through the Control Panel and using the Add/Remove Programs utility, I did manage to uninstall and reinstall Poser. With the same result. I'm getting really annoyed.

If this is just Poser and no other program giving you problems, something had to have been moved, renamed,or a corrupt file. When you use the Add/Remove,it will not get rid of those files that have been renamed, moved, etc. Try this...unistalle Poser(useing the add/remove),then manually go to where Poser was and deleate everything you find(and you will find things).Shut down your computer, restart, and reinstalle Poser with all patches. When you do get Poser back on it's feet,it would be a very good idea to run CorrectReferance on all your Poser files(freestuff). Good luck,SWAMP

Which version of Windows are you running? Are you on a network? Are you using a compressed drive or folder? It is possible that if you are running NT, 2000, or XP that there is a problem with the security settings that is preventing the files from being opened by Poser. Brian

Some ideas here, dunno if they will help... Norton to clean up the registry. defrag reinstall Poser (might be a truncated file you have there)

Well, problem solved. I ended up having to uninstall Poser, delete my entire library, and start over from the beginning, but it's working again. Luckily I had most of my stuff zipped and saved elsewhere. Wee!

Good..glad that worked. SWAMP

If it happens again, before you start deleting and reinstalling, you might want to delete your rsr files for the offending files in your geometries folder. Lots of times they become corrupted and give you that message. Pendy
