Don't you think a heck of a lot of Poser artists here are slightly pervy? When it comes to art in the poser gallerys, im not questioning the artists that use use the 'Boris valejo style', or fantasy & sci-fi artists that use powerfull sexual women in thier rather striking compositions. Im talking about the playboy posed nude or semi-clad Victoria pics that are dotted about the gallery. It would be nice to see nudes of all shapes & sizes. I have done plenty of nude life drawing but never has it been of a perfect buxom bimbo in stockings & a cowboy hat (maybe thats just my bad luck I guess). Dont get me wrong, I have no problem with naked ladies, I could look at them all day & pornography is jolly well fine by me, but when I want porn I go to a porn site. Also....how many underwear items & 'ladies accessories' do we really need? Is the Poser community swamped with people who produce work for Lingerie companies?..... or possibly 'questionable' websites? This is not a serious critisizm, merely an observation.

Anytime I see something screech across a room and latch onto someone's neck, and the guy screams and tries to get it off, I have to laugh, because what is that thing?

Online Now!

"Home made" pin-ups, cheesecake, pornography (call it what you like) - yes, this is a big portion of the Poser market. That's why most of the market place caters for the female models, and why there's lots of lingerie and not many sensible everyday clothes. It sells better. It's interesting to speculate how many artists got into Poser because of a desire to produce sexy pictures, and ended up producing other forms of art as a result of the learning process that we all have to go through, irrespective of what the subject matter is. Think of it as fuel for the creative process. :-)

Graviton ( ) posted Fri, 25 April 2003 at 7:11 AM

Hmmmmmm, Fuel for something.... Maybe these people can have a 'Laura Croft fixation' award for outstanding achivement to hormonal teenage boys.

It's interesting that the issue of "fixation with certain themes in renders" always comes up when the theme in question is erotic. Even if people point out that they have no problem whatsoever with porn and erotica, they do tend to express opinions when such pictures turn up more often than they are comfortable with. Consider the following situation: I have noticed from time to time that a lot of car renders turn up in the 3D Max gallery. I have, however, never seen anyone comment on this and say "If I want to look at car pictures, I go to a car site"... Depicting erotica has always been controversial, and the fact that it is so often debated shows that there is still a lot of prejudice associated with this subject. Just look at the ridiculous "is erotica REALLY art" debates we have seen in the Art Theory Forum. So why does so many erotic images turn up in the galleries? Well, because sexuality is a very important part of our life and art tends to gravitate around themes that are important to us. In the Poser galleries, this theme becomes more explicit due to the nature of the application. (It's a hell lot harder to do erotica in 3D Max...) It's as simple as that.

Slightly pervy? Only slightly pervy? I'll have you know I am out and out full-blown weird thank you!!! Gets the raincoat on and pours custard in the pockets.

Dale B ( ) posted Fri, 25 April 2003 at 8:20 AM

If something as vanilla as NVIATWAS is considered 'pervy', then the definition of perv has been altered. Radically.

sabretalon ( ) posted Fri, 25 April 2003 at 8:26 AM

It is only pervy when you don't like it! If you like it then it is erotic. I do agree that some of the images here should really be in Renderotica rather than here, but hey I can view this site and not Renderotica due to our firewall at work. And I am a bit of a voyeur (or pervert by another name). Although I personally have both modeled and drawn in life drawing classes. I find that a scantily clad figure with a suggestion of what lies underneath can be sexier than a fully lobbed out image (both male and female) Sometimes it is what you don't see that keeps your interest.

Maybe some of this comes from the film Wierd Science? Lets all build a babe and just maybe she will come to life! All this time, I thought people were talking about their wrists aching through the use of their mouse??

elgyfu ( ) posted Fri, 25 April 2003 at 8:36 AM

I'm a girl and I also have rendered more than a few semi-naked (or naked) Vickies. I am happily married and do not fancy ladies, virtual or real. Perhaps I am trying to create what I would LIKE to be, perhaps it makes me feel better that although i am seriously un-beautiful, I can create women who are? I don't know. I also create naked men pictures so there you go. Does it matter? If you are offended look elsewhere. There are some beautiful piccies out there, of all genres. Each to his or her own. * Elgyfu gets down from the soap box and goes to play with Vicky and Mike and the Toony Cat! **

platanum ( ) posted Fri, 25 April 2003 at 8:37 AM

It is all in the eye of the beholder. I would agree though that some out here (at least me) have a healthy imagination and can be considered 'slightly pervy' better than be thought of as a prude.

ockham ( ) posted Fri, 25 April 2003 at 9:27 AM

The real trouble with prudes is that their prurient suspicions don't go nearly far enough. What makes them think that I'm -not- getting my rocks off when I build a model of a telegraph key? Why must they assume that the naked human body is the only possible source of fetishistic thoughts? (Of course, a few extreme Christians and Muslims do take their suspicions that far, prohibiting all fiction and images entirely.)

I find it a little funny how quickly people move into defensive denial when this subject comes up. But hey, just me. YMMV.

garicstarr ( ) posted Fri, 25 April 2003 at 9:34 AM

I'm not offended by any of the pictures or content here, but I am slightly irritated by the overwhelming amount of models aimed towards erotica. Not have the talent to model peices I need, I am dependant on the goodwill of others, so my options are limited. I lean towards more Sci-fi, adventure, and while there are alot of quality models out there for sci-fi, if they had as many Sci-fi as erotica I'd be in heaven! Now my finacee...she thinks this site is full of pervs. ;) Oh and viewing this site at work can be a bit precarious with all the lightly clothed to nude women in the banner ads :)

Phantast ( ) posted Fri, 25 April 2003 at 9:35 AM

Well said, Kelderek! I got a laugh out of that. And, Graviton, if you think the artists at THIS site are slightly pervy ... oh ...

platanum ( ) posted Fri, 25 April 2003 at 9:41 AM

Joey, perhaps my perceptions of others replies is different than yours, I do not see any defensive denial however there is acknowledgement of 'perviness' just some of us prefer a more subtle label ;) This is after all a forum of artists each with their own likes and dislikes.

Graviton ( ) posted Fri, 25 April 2003 at 11:01 AM

LOL. Just came back to this thread & I can believe how many posts its generated for such an offhand comment. I would be the first one to admit It that when it comes to sex I am a number one grade A pervert of the highest order & in no way at all a prude. Whatever a guy, a girl, a french loaf & a dead mud shark get up to is their business. I was simply browsing the fine, excellent art that this community generates, from amature to pro there is some very diverse & interesting work but I found myself flicking through a lot of crap titillating stuff on here that I would consider a far cry from erotica. Ive seen a lot of porn that isnt erotic, erotica is an art form. My use of the word pervy was flippant but...hey...you guys know what im talking about. Mentioning this to the Poser community is a little like the 'Emperors new clothes' story. I would never put down anyones 'special relationship' that they have with Victoria, ive seen Wierd Science too & its still funny. Hey, render what you like guys, whatever tickles your pickle.

Anytime I see something screech across a room and latch onto someone's neck, and the guy screams and tries to get it off, I have to laugh, because what is that thing?

JoeyAristophanes ( ) posted Fri, 25 April 2003 at 11:15 AM

Maybe so, platanum, but I just find it a little funny that an off-hand comment like this usually results in "Well YOU must be some kind of prude NOT to like my beautifully rendered celebration of the naked human spirit!" (uh, yeah, okay). Or "It's NOT porn, it's EROTICA!" (sure, okay, if you say so). The original post may seem old, but the responses are just as tired. But whatever. This is why I don't look in the galleries very often: seen one, seen them all. YMMV.

platanum ( ) posted Fri, 25 April 2003 at 11:23 AM

agreed joey. 'nuff said by me. I'm just a newb here.

queri ( ) posted Fri, 25 April 2003 at 11:28 AM

There was a time-- Stephanie was just out-- and I wanted to do a series of pictures of Vicki giving her an orientation tour. First one: She's discovered her dressers-- all seven of them every drawer filled with see through panties and a few bras. " So, like, what do you wear when you go to the store?" Next pic: Vicki opens a closet and shows her all two or three of the ultra short dresses-- "But don't sit down in them" The rest of the closet is filled with armor. Third pic Steff is getting into the spirit-- wearing Billy T's spangly dress and carrying an uzi. Vicki's just hoping she hasn't noticed it's backless. Emily

My girlfriend will probably die laughing when I tell her I was called a prude.

I know I'm obsessed with the human female body (preferably naked) but does that really make me a pervert?

Graviton ( ) posted Fri, 25 April 2003 at 11:34 AM

c1rcle. Only if you want to wear their skins. Other than that your fine.

Patricia ( ) posted Fri, 25 April 2003 at 11:42 AM

This has been a much more entertaining thread to read than many on the same subject...could it possibly be that the Poser Community is growing up? Up and out of some of it's preachiness?? ;)

dialyn ( ) posted Fri, 25 April 2003 at 11:51 AM

I think some of us are as bored of the conversation as we are with the subjects of the repetitive graphics.

JVRenderer ( ) posted Fri, 25 April 2003 at 12:16 PM

You know, maybe we were taught to be pervy. I rememebered back in college, I took a couple of art classes. The second week we got a nude female model and we had to draw her (I think we use charcoal on paper, maybe Poser 1 was out by then, but I had no knowledge of computers then). Come to think of it, maybe that's why I took those classes. Or maybe we generally are pervy to begin with, not just artists.

the more often something is repeated the more likely it is to be accepted as part of the mainstream :) so the more mindless pap we produce with poser surely the more likely the "proper artists" are to accept it as a proper tool.

platanum ( ) posted Fri, 25 April 2003 at 12:28 PM

Graviton... by no means was I calling anyone specific a Prude it was a generalization much like your original statement. I'm sitting bored at work between trouble issues and thought I would partake of this little foray, obviously unaware that this is an habitual topic. However seeing the replies from some, my more 'pervy' type creations will not be as frequent as my 'prudish' ;) endeavors, since all I have posted is my first render. Well enough of every one's time, I'm just adding to the number of posts that this receives. Platanum

Graviton ( ) posted Fri, 25 April 2003 at 12:57 PM

I wasn't aware this was a habitual topic either, ive found it rather entertaining. It beats "Does anyone have Cr2 file for blah blah blah". Queri. You should still do that pic it would be hilarious. Nice to see that us tortured arty types dont take ourselves too seriously. ;)

Finister ( ) posted Fri, 25 April 2003 at 1:02 PM

There's also something to be said about models not wearing many clothes but not being naked. You guys ever see the Benny Hill TV show routine where men at a nude beach are more excited by the women in bathing suits than the nude women? I think some of the 'vanilla renders' (as pervs like me call them), or 'hard R' pics, are in some ways more arousing than full nudes found in porno. And it's not just the men with teenage libidos making erotic pictures around here or elsewhere. There are a lot of female artists doing it too. You go girls!!
