Subject: Questions about how Bryce Materials work - Please help if you can

Anyone know how to create a bryce material from a JPEG or BMP? Also, is it possible to export a bryce material as a JPG or BMP?

Hi, again. Chapter 9 of the Bryce_User_Guide has some interesting and usefull information regarding materials. However, if you want to export a bryce procedural texture, an idea is to create a flat picture object, use the top view and adjust the neccessary parameters (size, sky, ambience etc...) so that you have a full screen view. Then apply the Proc_Texture of your choice. Render. Save Image. HTH Siegbert

using bmps or jpegs is very easy. click the m on your selected object. in the dte, put a button in the first slot by diffusion and ambience. In the materials window that opens, Hit the second button from the left on the bottom. That will give you a picture of the little gold man. Then click the second button from the left on the top, that will open the texture editor. you'll see three boxes. above the first two you'll see load. Click on load, and browse for your file, double click it and it will load it into the window. Do the same with the second. Then click the checkmark, and you'll see your picture loaded into the material window. Also on that middle window where you load the image, there a button above it that's half black and half white. clicking that button changes the transparency mode so you get some interesting effects.

Thanks! right. The manual does cover that, although it confused the heck out me when I first started. My question is, can it be converted into a bryce material - like the ones alread in there. In those materials, you can change one or all of the colors in the texture editor as well as adding effects like distance fuziness, make it a volume material etc. If so, what needs to be done? The manual is very technical on this whole area, and a little bit beyond me. Thanks again Aharon

Yes, once you have the jpeg made into a mat, applied to your object, and the object selected, open the material editor, up where it says edit. You'll note that the preview window shows your material. Choose what section you want your material to go in, then click on add. Just give it a name and whatever comments you want and click on the checkmark. That adds it. You can also export it as a .mat file. But beware, some jpegs or bmps make huge mat files. I have one of cat hair that's so large I can't even use it because it's so slow

Thanks. I'll be carefull with the file size. I have 128MB RAM and this sucker still freezes up sometimes.
