Ok...disappeared again as I worked on some more photos and then decided to try a little different approach to the gallery (want to give the biggest viewable area I could for those with smaller screens without having to resize my images down further). Anyway, I went to a different way to display the images in my gallery. Wondered if you guys could check it out and let me know which way you like better. The link above is to the my "Single Shots" gallery. -=>Donald

The link here is to the same gallery, with the updated viewing code. It's just a rough. Still deciding on background color. I also didn't xfer over the captions to this one. To close the viewing window, just click the photo. Thanks guys! -=>Donald

Yes, I think I prefer the second link. I have a 17" monitor. Hope this is of help. Pat

Undoubtedly the second one. I enjoyed your gallery while I was there...you have great work. I think the city lights were my favorite :)

the second link is giving me errors, I presume with the javascript. Im on shitty Anapharm computers though, so don't trust me. they may be the devil, but did you ponder using frames possibly? Just a thought.

Thanks guys. This REALLY helps me out. Fict - Which OS and browser are you using? I've only tested it on my side with IE 6.0 and Mozilla 1.3; cause that's all I have installed. :) -=>Donald

its a cruddy computer. running win2k and IE 5, but I still wouldn't trust it.

Well I hate to go against the crowd here, but I personally don't like pop-up windows. Even to view photos. The pop-up window also came up behine my main browser window. I am using Netscape 7 on Windows XP.

Randy - Did the page go behind the browser once or with all the images? If it did it everytime, then I can probably add a forced focus to it or something. Let me know. Thanks! Leave it to AOL to do something weird like this (sorry ... still bitter that they took my favorite browser and turned it into what it is now -- at least the Mozilla guys are keeping the spirit of the original Netscape alive). As for popups, it's the only solution I could come up with that allows people with smaller screens hopefully see the entire image and still maintain the size of my photos where I want them. It is curious though. A friend of mine said the same thing ... he hates popups. And I agree to a point. I really don't want ads and crap popping up all over. But I did question the sentiment for this type of popup. It's popup that the user initiates for a specific reason (viewing the photo). He really couldn't tell me beyond "I hate popups" why he didn't like this type. Can you tell me what it is that bothers you about it? Thanks again! -=>Donald

Every time I clicked on a thumbnail, the window would open then pop behind the main window. Yeah I hate AOL, and wished they would have left Netscape alone. I use to be an IE man, but I like the tab views of Netscape. As far as popups I think it is just the matter of mouse clicks. Click on a thumbnail, click to close window, click to open window....etc..... If it opens in the same window with the thumbnails still there then I only have to click on the next thumbnail. But mainly it is a vanilla and chocalate ice cream thing. Some like on flavor some like another.

I like 2 better also because I think it puts more attention on the actual photo than it does the website. Honestly, I had a bit of a hard time comprehending the layout of the #1. It wasn't obvious to me for instance that the arrow buttons scrolled and clicking the picture was for that single picture and not a gallery. It could just be me though? Popups do present some technical issues because browsers are not all the same and they will not stay the same, ever, count on that. You may check out the 2 slide show view options I have at my site. These are out of the can JASC Media Center Plus 3.10 conversions to html. They have several options available. Some include captions and have more of a magazine layout. I am not sure if you can tweak or crowbar one of them into the web styles you would like but they are just another way to do the same thing. Good luck, I know how hard this is, look at how boring my first page is for an example. But for me, it's still just a hobby.

Randy - Ok..found it. It's a bug that AOL has yet to address (in fact, doesn't even appear that they are trying). The main browser window (the parent) takes back focus and goes to top if a window is launched using inline script. Blah blah blah ... instead of yammering on about it, they could have fixed it by now. AOL.... shakes head Anyway, thanks for pointing that out. I went ahead an installed Netscape 7 so I can test this stuff. Ah well..back to the virtual drawing board. Doca - The layouts are the same, only difference is how the images are displayed. I know what you mean though. I think I may end up replacing the arrow keys with "FIRST" "LEFT" "RIGHT" "LAST" or something like that. Also, because I sent the URL directly into the gallery, you didn't see the "Here's how to use the gallery" paragraph you get going in regularly. Either way, it still needs work. Shouldn't have to explain how to you use it ... need it to be more intuitive for everyone. Thanks for the comments and suggestions! :) -=>Donald
