Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 15 4:06 am)
eXcellent. ladies and gents, here we have a model reply post: reply was fast and it delivers vital information. IM me if you're about to get shot, I can take a bullet for you as a 'thank-you' for this one (but only since I get to pay for pBoost) :D now, what was my fiancee's credit card number again... regis the relieved
PBooost is an essential utility. It's great for Poser 4! PBooost is not yet ready for Poser 5. You can make use of Poser 5's ability to handle sub-diretories. Just use your file manager to make some coherent sense of everything. I made folders for the major characters, then made subdirectories for things like their MAT Pose files, hair, etc. Each time I install something new, I take control and put the items where I want. I also make "themed" CD collections of everything I buy or download (commercial or free stuff). Mike has his own CD's for characters and clothes. So does Vicky, Stephanie, etc. If you want to catalog all that stuff, look for Offline CD Browser, a free program. I forget the link, since I am not at my own computer for awhile.

Thanks for the tip about the Offline CD Browser. I've included the link for others. The sense one makes of one's files on Poser is largely a personal one. Poser5 allows the libraries to be stacked, racked, and aggregated to meet one's own proclivities and peculiarities. The arrangement of the texture files is similiarly subject to whim, except that if you want Poser5 to run, all library objects requiring a texture should be optimized by running CorrectReference (free utility here) and thereafter the texture files must not be moved on pain of death, The specified location of an obj file in the geometries directory used by a library item must never be moved on pain of death. If the death part is scary, you may choose insanity as a close alternative penance.

Insanity has definetly been my choice of penance. Especially after the great drive swap of 2002. My word was that a laugh riot (open character, wait, get message about missing obj file, yell, move obj file to expected location, try again...) I'm off to pick up the ChangeReference utility. I must have missed that one. Thanks again for the tip.
I know what you mean about hard drive problems. I have one drive that seems to die for awhile, then come back to life just when I'm ready to give up. Unfortunately that is the drive that has my entire Poser 4 installation. The drive chose to die just before I left home. It'll be awhile before I live at a place where I can setup my computer once I send for it. My first priority will be to have that drive replaced under warranty. OH, the name of the program is CORRECT reference. Just do a search in Renderosity's Free Stuff for hogwarden, and you'll find it.
Hiy'all.. Blimey... I missed this thread! Just so you're all aware, I'm sending out an update to those who already have PBooost, and wish to use it with Poser 5. Send me an e-mail with your username and I'll mail over the update. It's a fairly major update, in advance of the proper release of PBooost 1.4 which is coming shortly. H:)

as my poser went over 600megs, i started to wonder is there a program to get the files in any kind of order? i must have dozen of files 'somewhere in E:-drive' i cant get my hands into. some files are in two or three different folders since when i started posing i didnt have much ideas where to put them. removing unneeded files is pure hell, even though i might save over 100megs just by removing old stuff. the absolute stupidity of poser is the difficulty of saving downloaded and my own files. if i was to make a program, i'd need alot of time thinking how to make it as far-out as in poser. one cant even customize the folders where to save files (i love to type click to E:Program FilesMetaCreationsPoser 4RuntimeLibrariescharactersomething for each and every installed item and then to folder E:Program FilesMetaCreationsPoser 4RuntimeGeometriessomewhere just to see if i need to put something there.etc.) has curious labs done something about this in poser 5 or should i just stick to scratching my head with poser4? are there programs to clean up poser folders and easily install new files? better yet, are the programs to force poser to allow different file folders? gillions of thanks for all tips to-come on this one regis the frustrated
