Subject: Looking for a Katana that isn't quite a Katana...

Axe_Gaijin ( ) posted Mon, 05 May 2003 at 5:05 AM · edited Sat, 09 November 2024 at 7:41 PM

Sounds confusing huh? Anyhow for one of the main characters in my story I'm searching for a sigle edged crurved sword. Pretty much with a blade like a Katana but with a longer blade (rougly the size of a Claymore) without a guard, and a more fantasy inspired hilt & pommel. (either a dragon's claw on the end holding a pommel stone ore a bone would be super) Can anyone either; Direct me to a sword as I just described it (unfortunatly has to be free as I'm broke again) Tell me how I can make one form exsiting models I allready have. (I have several Katanas and other swords). t.i.a. Axe.

~Free I cannot help, however your sword requirement can be found in the RuntimeDNA marketplace. Colm Jackson has created a sword for one of his dark elves ~ 'Xenobia', that is similar to your requirements. regarding making one yourself from existing models... could you try using the XYZ dials for the elongation, and turning sections invisible for the pommel, with the necessary substitutions you require on the pommel...eg a dragons claw (exporting the one of the available dragons' claw ~reimported as a prop and parented to the sword) it might work ?

Elvin Sword from RDNA free section - the exact replica of Arwen's sword from LotR movie can work well after re-texturing. I recomend, really worth a while.

I gave it a go at modeling it. Is it anything like what you want? I haven't uvmapped or textured it yet. I used procedural textures in VUE4 for this picture.

Nifty! I like the ring on the butt of the pommel.

Axe_Gaijin ( ) posted Mon, 05 May 2003 at 2:37 PM

Wow Cybermonk, that looks almost excactly like what I had in mind. Only length and curve of the blade are not like the picture in my mind :) Nice work.

Axe_Gaijin ( ) posted Mon, 05 May 2003 at 2:44 PM

P.s. Thanks everyone else for the tips BTW. Xenobia's sword has about the right feel except the big guard and a pommel that is to short to wield it 2 handed (forgot to mention htat, but with a blade the size I described it's pretty hard to wiled it any other way then 2 hsnded. For the same reason the Elvin sword (shouln't that be Elven?) isn't suited to my needs, it's designed as a 1 handed weapon and with that peculiar pommel shape, even with rescaling it would look odd.

I'm also looking for a spellchecker or a new pair of eyes... sjeez :D

Cybermonk ( ) posted Mon, 05 May 2003 at 3:32 PM

So you want a longer blade and curved? Sounds more like a scimitar. Well off to see if i can modify it.

Well a Scimitar would have a slightly wider blade near the tip, that's not realy what I'm after. You know that sword that Ramirez has in Highlander? Wich Conner later takes as his sword after Ramirez is killed by the Kurgan? Somewhere among those lines of looks, but without a guard and a longer blade, kinda like a nagita but without that level of curve. (witouth the curve of the Nagita that is, since it's a little bit more curved then the Katana.) Axe.

Axe_Gaijin ( ) posted Mon, 05 May 2003 at 6:20 PM

D'oh... of course I didn't mean Nagita.."sigh that should read Nodachi

You know your right that katana in Highlander was curved some. Well I have just been going from memory. Well I modified it and textured it. What about this version?

That's amazing, that's exactly it. Traditionaly made Katanas should always be curved :) It happenes in the proces of making the sword, when cooling it for the first time in water after folding the steel several times. Since the traditional Katana is made from a soft steel core (to make the blade flexible) and a harder steel on the outside (to make it strong and razor sharp) the two metals cool at a different rate (like a bi-metal in a barometer) that causes the blade to curve. That first moment of cooling is when the swordsmith knows wether it's going to be a goood blade or not, it either curves gracefully, or breaks. sigh my head is just full with useless trivia... I bet I could list all 7 wonders of the ancient world as well... let's see, hanging gardens of Babilon, Piramides at Gizeh........

Thanks very much Shogakusha. I've just started modelig in Wings3d within the last month but I've been modeling with Rhino3d for the last couple of years. I did the katana in WIngs 3d. Its a very intuitive and powerful modeler. Its fun to use. You can't beat the price either... its free. So if you have any inclination to model I recomend it.
