Subject: Linux? X Windows?

Has anyone used Poser under Linux? Or, for that matter, RDS, Bryce or Photoshop? If so, please let me know how well they work, or how poorly. I am desperate to get rid of Windows all together, but don't want to give up my bread and butter apps.

Good news- I checked with a few sites and people have gotten Bryce to work under Linux and I think Photoshop will to if I get all the Windows fonts ported over. The trick is pullig it into Wine and being sure to mock up the directories needed. I'll work on it and hopefully we can kiss windows good bye.

I say a posting on the poser list a many months ago by someone who was involved in a full Bryce port to Be OS. No idea what happened to this.

I think BeOS would be a good choice for the old Meta products as it IS geared toward graphics, even more so than the Mac, I don't use BeOS, because my graphics card isn't supported, damn cirrus logic chips... anyhoo, but even in the crappy black and white mode, I opened up a few pics that would have taken me at least 30 seconds to a minute to open and they opened instantly. Besides, BeOS is free, it can co-habitate with Windows, you can import all your graphics and such. Granted Linux is more powerful, but at least BeOS is easier to configure, run setup, fill in a few things and you are on your way. Plus you don't have to screw with partitions. Of course you have to live with only 500megs for native be stuff, but if you mount the windows partition, then you have all the space you need. Be cool if Curious Labs did a BeOS port...maybe even included BeOS with the product...

Poser was written with MertoWerks tools, probably using the PowerPlant class libraries and application framework. This means that you create a program for the Mac, and with a few minor tweeks, it becomes a Linux program. A few more minor tweeks, and it becomes a Linux program. Problem with BeOS is it isn't supported by the MetroWerks tools. It's really wxWindows too bad that wxWindows that there isn't wxWindows a robust class library wXwindows that can be used to port from Windows to Mac wXwindows to Linux to BeOS wXwindows. But I don't wXwindows know where you'd wXwindows get such a tool. p.s. Linux has been running in a Windows FAT partition since long before BeOS was free or could coexist with Windows. Ciao! Joe
