Subject: In Bryce panorama rendering, where is what angle on the image?

In Bryce panorama rendering, what is the equation relating (angle seen by the camera) to (place on the resulting image)? I can tell that horizontal is 0 to 360 deg; but how does vertical relate to +90 to -90 deg? I tried assuming that the height of the render is +90deg to -90deg linearly, and I made an .OBJ globe texture-mapped accordingly, and when I applied a Bryce panoramic render to it the image was stretched around the poles and compressed near the equator.

The vertical view-angle has always been a mystery to me. It just doesn't seem logic to me at all.
