With the generous contribution of Robin Miller, 3D Lapidary can now offer a Poser-ready prop of a Standard Round Brilliant diamond. The OBJ model is UV mapped, and has both texture and reflection maps available. Just unzip to your main Poser directory, and find the prop in the newly made 'ArtS' section of your Props library. (RSR and PP2 files also included in the zip file.)

I want to thank Robin for her work in making this possible--I still haven't got a clue as to how to setup files for Poser, but she did! Enjoy, and let Robin know how you like her work!

Nice you did something for poser, i use your gemstomes in bryce scine a long time, and they are "brilliant "

I've been visiting 3D Lapidary for a LONNGGGG time now. Nice to see the artist getting into the Poser craze ;o). Laurie

This is really beautiful........thank you so much. (: Genny

Laurie:

It isn't that I am just getting into Poser--I've been using it for several years now. But only at a very basic level...RSRs PP2s and the Byzantine labyrinth of Poser directories need more time and patience than I can muster to understand. So I let those like Robin (Thank you! Thank you!) who have a better grasp, do the really hard stuff--and make sure they get the proper credit for their work...!

thanks folks... its nice to see that people like the diamond prop. Thank Rosemary most of all for making such a great resource available... it wasn't possible without her great webpage.

The .dxf versions on the 3D Lapidary site work quite well in Poser 5, also, with a little work. My thanks to you all.

yeah, P5 does the refraction and transparency that P4 doesn't do. That's why I had to uvmap and texture the diamond prop for P4. I do my texture maps in Carrara, does a better job rendering gems than P5 :) But I'm working on more realistic P5 shaders, never fear. :) link is to a Carrara 2.1 render using the 3d Lapidary gemstone models :) Looks really good in there too.

Nice pic, one question though. What do you use as a texture for the gem? TMG

bijouchat ( ) posted Mon, 02 June 2003 at 1:08 PM

I make renders of the gems in Carrara 2.1, and use them as texture maps. :) my gallery has quite a few examples of my gemstone Carrara renders... hence why I posted the link to one of the images earlier up in the thread. Carrara is perfect for this - it has an addon fresnel plugin and utilises caustics, making the renders very realistic. The upside is that the render matches the gem model geometry, too.

forgot to add, the Carrara shaders I use are entirely procedural. I don't use texture maps for the Carrara renders, rather I have developed shaders that use no texture maps (the models in that image aren't even uvmapped), I make renders in Carrara to use as texture maps in Poser, as P4 does not do refraction. Spent quite a while figuring out a decent gemstone shader. You can do similar things in highend rendering packages, just not in most of the lowend apps, not even in Poser 5 (no fresnel or caustics). Which is why I bought Carrara... has a lot of high end features for a lowend price.

Looked at your images, they are nice! TMG

bijouchat: your renders look pretty good !

bijouchat ( ) posted Mon, 02 June 2003 at 3:03 PM

thanks! I'm proud of the shader work with the gemstones... they really test my abilities!

thgeisel ( ) posted Mon, 02 June 2003 at 3:07 PM

just gave it a try in bryce 4 and poser 5 . poser 5 : weak results ; bryce 4 much better but nothing to compare with your images

blushing... thank you... but its probably because my Carrara shader trees are bordering on the Byzantine in complexity... :) They took me about 2 weeks to get to where they are now, and I'm always tweaking them. I have different ones for various kinds of gemstones... because the colours, transparency and refraction varies from gemstone to gemstone, plus faceted stones are cut to a certain refractive index, you have to use the right one when you render the stone to get proper brilliance... Rosemary's site has a chart for the refractive index, and most of the models state which RI the model is for :) my shaders use a refraction formula and a fresnel plugin for proper fresnel refraction and reflection effects. Lately I scooped up an iridescence formula so that's going into the mix for colourless stones too g I'm going to -try- to translate some of that over to P5, and see how far I get. I'll probably still have to cheat and use Carrara to render a texture map in order to get halfway decent reflection mapping in Poser, though.
