Corel axes Bryce for Mac development By Dennis Sellers dsellers@maccentral.com May 30, 2003 5:00 pm ET Corel is discontinuing the development of Bryce for the Mac. Bryce 5 is software for creating 3D landscapes and animations. "At Corel we continually monitor the sales performances of our products to ensure we capitalize on market trends and opportunities," Meredith Dundas, Corel's communications manager, told MacCentral. "Through our research we have found that sales for Corel Bryce 5 are strongest with Windows customers, particularly at retail. As a result we have chosen to focus our efforts on Bryce 5 for Windows." Corel will continue to support Bryce 5 for Mac with customer and technical support. You can still order licenses for Bryce 5 for Mac through the Corel Inside Sales department by calling 1-877-OK-COREL (1-877-652-6735). There are no plans to cancel any other Mac compatible Corel products, Dundas said. "We continue to support the Mac platform with our award-winning graphics products including the recently released Corel Painter 8, CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 11, Corel KPT Collection and Corel KnockOut 2," she said.

That's a literal shame, since Bryce was first produced for Mac's (only). But, it's also kinda redundant news, since it looks like Corel is "discontinuing the development of Bryce"...period. (it seems)

That is definitely a shame, especially since Bryce was one of the first 3D programs I used when I got my first computer(a Mac). Hopefully though, someone will pick up Bryce and develop it more. It's a wonderful program and has great potential :)

Which is exactly why someone else WILL one day pick it up. ;o) AS

Corel..the killer of fine software, Personally I will never buy another Corel anything. Which is a shame cause I really like the KPT series. So in my eyes, the sooner Corel goes out of business and goes bankrupt the better. 8 months ago I was accused ( here at Renderosity ) of being a Corel basher, because I said Corel could care less about Bryce. Well people I'm a Corel Basher cause they *#&%.

That sucks, most of my Bryce pictures are done on a Mac. My first exposure to Bryce was on a Mac. Corel joins the list of companies I don't like along with dirtbag Metacreations.

"Through our research we have found that sales for Corel Bryce 5 are strongest with Windows customers, particularly at retail." No sh!t sherlock. Haven't they heard that Apple holds like 6% of the market? Oh yeah 6% of people have macs and 85 percent have a windows computer. Wow we sold 5 times as many licenses to windows users than to mac user. Holy cow! Let's stop making bryce for mac! That way our sales will go down even more! I feel soooo s,art right now. They might even give me a dmeotion for this! Oh well what's the use. This company died 6 months ago. i;m outta here. ;)

Corel are scum with no vision and they don't deserve to stay in business. I for one would never buy any of they're products and the sooner they are declared dead the better. Catlin

Aye, and also the sooner they will HAVE to sell Bryce off, just to break even or something... I used to run a P2-233 alongside the original IMAC, sit and benchmark the things back and forth. They were almost identical, for render times, it was a lot of fun making scenes at the same time as my younger brother, to see who came up with new ways to do the similar things! Bad move, Corel. Sure Mac users only take up a small market percentage, but my guess is that MANY Mac users use their machines almost exclusively fo graphics and design, whereas you see Windows in a lot more offices, sitting there doing nothing... I'll never buy a Mac again, for certain, but I know that deep down inside all the shiny plastic of those machines, they are still a great tool for any artist. For Bryce to be considered pro-grade software by the "community", people have to use it to make money. Been doing that since it came out! If only Corel would act like professionals too.

Yes I am a loyal Mac user and have been using Bryce since the early versions. I've been hoping for Bryce 6 to hit the market. Now it seems it won't happen for the Macintosh. What a shame and short sightedness by Corel. I hope they will sell Bryce to a company who has vision. I will never buy another Corel product, if indeed they plan on to forget about the Mac Bryce market.
