Subject: Poser - Lightwave - plugin non for LW ver.7.5?

PlumBob ( ) posted Sun, 01 June 2003 at 1:15 PM · edited Sun, 26 January 2025 at 10:41 PM

I recently purchased Poser 4 & ProPack bundle as an E-download from the Curious Labs Webstore and found after the fact that the Lightwave plugin only supports up to ver.7.0b of LW. while I have LW ver.7.5. I started with LW.ver6.5b and still have that CD. Can I reinstall 6.5b at the same time that I have LW7.5 installed or will that cause a software conflict. Does anyone else here have this same problem and if so did you find any workable solution other than downgrading your LWver.? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It doesn't work for you? I have LW 7.5 and Propack is working for me... Im on a PC.

If all else fails, there is a third-party plugin for Poser into LightWave by Greenbriar Studios. BYS

Hi krimpr! Actually I am very new to Poser and haven't tried the LW plugin yet. I was going by what the Curious Labs website was saying in the faq's that LW ver.7.5 is not yet supported with an update to the plugin. I puchased Poser ver.4.0.3 Is this the ver. you have and does the plugin work despite what Curius Labs says? Thanks for Your Reply

That URL would be Greenbriar Studios BYS

I too use the Pro Pack plugin with Lightwave 7.5b on Mac.

krimpr ( ) posted Sun, 01 June 2003 at 2:30 PM

Yes PlumBob, it's working for me. I guess that they don't want to commit to LW 7.5 functionality as it was introduced ater the plugin was written, but I haven't had any problems yet. Should be no problem. Heya BYS: I've been thinking about that Greenbriar plug too. Do you have it? What do you think of it? If I understand it correctly it is possible to bring a rigged poser character into layout and animate it in LW? Textures come in sorted out properly? I'm a bit confused as just sorting out the differences in my mind between a cr2 and an SR-71 or F-14. Thanks.

You should be able to have both versions of Lightwave as long as you have not installed them in the same folder. Make sure before you reinstall 6.5 that you have saved your config files as a precaution.

Yep, it will bring in a Poser character, with textures, morphs (as endomorphs) and rigging. The weight maps might need tweaking, but since I'm going to use at it for rendering, I haven't tested the advanced features. (Well, they're advanced for me.) If you get the whole pack, you can create morphs for Poser characters more easily in Lightwave. .cr2 files are descriptions of how Poser uses the .obj mesh files. They include everything from what textures to use to how to manipulate the different parts of the object - bends, deformations, etc. Morph information is also included in .cr2 files normally. Cheers!

Thanks Crescent! I'm starting to think that I may be able to really use something like that. The only thing that would be holding me back is that the lipsynching would have to be done sans mimic, but I'd MUCH rather be animating in Lightwave. I wish you had said it doesn't work and that would have made my decision easier.... I gues you can't have your cake and eat it too.

  • Yes. * Very nice. Haven't had a chance to check the latest version, but the original that I purchased worked very well. * Yes. * Yes. The CR2 file is a Poser "character file". It contains references to the geometry as a Wavefront .obj file as well as setting up parameters for body parts, bones (and their deformation of the geometry), morphs (and their deformation of the geometry), texture regions, and so on. Basically, this file defines the posable, morphable, texturable character within Poser. Currently, the Greenbriar plugin will work on all sorts of Poser files (PZ3, CR2, HR2, etc). BYS

PZ3's too!!! That means Mimic would still be useful then... Well that settles that then. Thanks!

Hi all! As I'm new to the Renderosity web site, I'm discovering this to be a wonderfull resource populated by many helpfull, friendly and knowledgable people. Thanks all for your enlightenment.

If you install both versions of Lightwave, you have do so in a particular way, otherwise a few files get overwritten and some things in Lightwave 7.5 won't work. I'm still pretty new to Lightwave so I can't remember what they were. But it happened to me. I had 6.5 on my machine and then I installed 7.5. I then ran 6.5 because I knew it best. But as soon as I did, it changed something in 7.5. They had some instructions on NewTek about how to set them both up, if you wanted to have them both. Not long after, I got a new pc and I only installed 7.5. Search the NewTek forum and you'll find information out about this.

Welcome PlumBob!

Have you thought of reading my tutorial here on how to install the plugin to work with LW 7.5? It's at the LightWave forum. -scara

PlumBob ( ) posted Mon, 02 June 2003 at 5:14 PM

scaramouche scaramouche can you do the fandango? :> Thanks for the tutorial I will try it when I resolve other issues I.E. Is SR3_core the same thing by a diferent name as Pro_Pack_Core? I e-downloaded the bundle from Curious Labs web store. I e-mailed support at Curious on 6/1, waiting for response. When I unzipped the Pro_Pack_core I got "Invalid file or file is Corrupted". I did successfully unzip and install the Poser_4_Installer_CD but I also downloaded 5 other zipped files LW_plugin, Poser_4 Content, Poser_4_Setup, Pro_Pack_Core and Poser_4_Support_Files. They've got me confused now as to wether those other five files are contained within the one I did install Poser_4_Installer_CD or if I need to unzip and install each seperately. Hope they respond in a timely manner. Wish me Luck. :>

BYS and Crescent: Thanks for the feedback on Greenbriar's plug; I genuinely appreciate direction. I'm assuming that since it allows Pz3 imports that mimic will still be useful. (If I'm understanding correctly.) I'm really looking forward to animating characters in LW, as that's where I play around the most. (Although if I import the Poser file as a Pz3 I'm assuming that character animation will be overridden.) Oh well, at least I have some new options. Anyway I just purchased it via Paypal and am trying to find out if it is a D/L or a shipped CD. Anyway, thanks for the input.

krimpr ( ) posted Mon, 02 June 2003 at 5:59 PM

Oh yeah; good luck PlumBob....

Crescent ( ) posted Mon, 02 June 2003 at 6:19 PM

SR-3 is for Poser 5. Don't try to install it if you don't have P5. Bad things might happen. I got my P4, PPP, and P5 as boxed editions, so I can't help with the internet install process. I'd assume that you need to install the files as follows, but don't quote me on it: Poser_4_Installer_CD Poser_4_Setup Poser_4 Content Poser_4_Support_Files Pro_Pack_Core LW_plugin Good luck!

BeatYourSoul ( ) posted Mon, 02 June 2003 at 6:31 PM

PlumBob: If you get the e-version of ProPack and its plugins, after installing Poser 4, install Pro Pack. It will ask if you want to install the plugins for other apps after it installs, one at a time. krimpr: Greenbriar's plugin is "keyed" to your version of LightWave 3D. Once he get's the Product key, he will email you your own keyed plugin as an attachment. Watch out for Outlook as it tends to lock out attachments of certain types. I had him put into a zip archive for me. BYS

krimpr ( ) posted Mon, 02 June 2003 at 6:41 PM

Thanks BYS; I just got an email from him, and just as you predicted I had to send him my dongle # and he said he would prepare, zip, and send it. Thanks!
