Subject: Tailor & Memory

Anyone else notice to drain on memory Tailor causes? even a possibly memory leak? When I have Poser4 running on XP my PF is around 280MB but if I start up Tailor it shoots up to over 400MB. And my system slows down to a crawl (Athlon 2100+ 512MB) Earlier today when I was working in tailor I had to reset my PC as PF usage shot up to 800MB + for no aparent reason after doing some morph transfers, even shuting down Tailor didn't help. I probably should invest in at least another 512MB of RAm anyhow, but has anyone else noticed this or had simulair problems? p.s. I abslolutly love the tailor though, best buy I ever did I could start doing what Iplan on doing without it. :) Cheers, Axe

Maybe only run Tailor by itself? Remember XP is awful at memory management.

Mhh odd that's not what I've been told... I actually got XP pro because it was advised to me for having better memory managment then for instance win '98 (the OS on my old PC)

I'm a computer geek, and don't even know what PF is?! I don't waste time looking at all sorts of meters or performance utilities. I'd rather just use the darned computer. I've used Tailor on my computer, with 512MB of RAM, and successfully run other applications at the same time. Yes, some things slow down a bit, but so what? Ok, so I don't run Tailor every day, and I can just live with it.

I believe that PF is the Page File? IE the swapfile...

Using Poser since 2002. Currently at Version 11.1 - Win 10.

I checked the memory useage on my box..(XP home, 1.3ghz cpu,512mb installed memory). Open Taylor=30 mb Open Vicky2=80 mb Open morphing catsuit=170 mb Transfering all morphs did not increase memory useage! So my total memory useage did not go over the 170 mb. SWAMP

Wait a minuet,I looked at your post again....your running Poser at the same time. OK add what I get to what your Poser useage is and that comes out right. However your Poser memory useage seems pretty high to me....I've never gone over 200 mb with two mill figures loaded. Btw you do have the memory patch installed for Poser...right? SWAMP

The memory upgrade made things worse on my system. Rendering in P4, I ran "out of disk space" in 1 day. Usually this takes a month or more. Rendering and Tailoring are both CPU and Memory Intensive. I get 100% CPU Utilization and 675MB PageFile Usage when I do both simultaneously. I'm Tailoring V3 Clothing and Rendering a clothed V3 Character. It's still an order of magnitude faster than Rendering in P5 FireFly!! My system -- Athlon 1200, 512MB RAM, 896MB Virtual Memory across 4 disk partitions.

Nah it's not poser that's doing the "damage" I only have it on to check the clothes I want to change for a character before morphing in the Tailor, then after doing that I save the character including the new clothes. My noraml PF usage is around 130 MB with Norton, Smartdoctor and a wallpaper chacnger in the background. However, I noticed something else. When I was in the kitchen away from my PC yesterday long enough for my screensaver to kick in, it actualy locked up my PC. It was a Changer I had on my PC a long time but never used, and I turned it on yesterday. I'm going to have to see where the memory is going today. BTW the PF usage for Poser includes use of Vicky2 & a set of clothing. Plus the forementioned programs running in the background. And the real bad part is I'm running out of HD space :D I'm Running Poser on a 14GB partition, of wich 5.7 remains free now :P

PeterWahoo ( ) posted Thu, 05 June 2003 at 8:02 AM

OH god, I believe that's your problem, only offering 14GB to Poser! Geesh don't you know Poser uses lots of hard drive space, and so does Windows, for swap files! You want to get the biggest darned hard drive you can afford, with only ONE partition, then things will work much better.

morbidpeeches ( ) posted Fri, 06 June 2003 at 12:49 AM

I don't think only having 14GB is the problem... I have a 10GB partition to Poser, and it runs fine. I have a 700mhz Athlon, 512MB of RAM... sometimes it runs slugishly, but I had V3 open, and a few other props loaded, PLUS I was using Tailor... maybe it's the base figure loaded in Tailor. When using V3 there, or even V2, it takes a while, but I was using the Mannekin... maybe that's the difference. I didn't notice any lag when doing so.

I can only guess that you're either new with Poser, or don't have much installed. I just checked and my Poser folder is about 8 GB after I cut out quite a few items. I've had a much larger Poser installation in the past. Heck I've had Poser 4 on one drive (30 GB in 1 partition), and Poser 5 on another drive (40GB, 1 partition). At one time or another I've run out of room and needed to cut down on the sheer size of my Poser installation. If you have many small partitions, that can be a very big problem.

I have P4 & 5 on a 14GB partion and am doing fine! But then, I don't load everything ever created either. I load/unload from CD to a project runtime (P5) what I need for a particular project. A good CD cataloger makes it possible to find what you need faster than hunting thru mega-gigs of stuff which you probably don't use that often anyway.
