It's a compression format for MAC just like zip. Use stuffit expander to expand this file (also available for windows: aladdin software).

Alladdin Expander will open a SIT file. It's available free from http://www.aladdinsys.com/

Data files are huge, and must be compressed to be readily transferred. It keeps file sizes and bandwidth down. There are many ways to compress the image. One of the oldest utilities on the PCs wss called PKZIP, and is a standard (Windows bought it). Files which are zipped have .zip as an extension. The main software on Macs is called STUFFIT, and these files have .sit endings. There are also .rar and .arc and other endings meaning that the file has been compressed, and needs to be extracted before being used. You can download a PC version of Stuffit free from Alladin Software which will open all these file types. Carolly

I think winrar will open .ace files, Matt. But I could be wrong - been a while since I had to open one. :) Kate

mcenriven, if you are asking about sit files in refrence to Daz downloads, which now include a choice of sit or zip, the sit files are for mac users and the zip files are for pc users these files contain the same product. so you only have to download one of them not both the sit and zip. if not ignore my babbling

I thought a sit file was when you download millions of files(like me) and you sit on them awihle before you use one :o)

For Ace files, use WinAce For sit files: Let them be, DON'T get that stuffit expander unless you want to screw up a lot of things. This thing associates itself with all sorts of files and is hard to get rid of again.

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA

Ernyoka, I can't imagine having trouble with Stuffit. It opens a variety of files, but don't you just drap whatever file you want opened on top of it? It is certainly cleaner than WinZip which wants to manage everything. Carolly

The thing is, Carolly, when I installed stuffit, it changed all my winzip associations and it was a major pain in the neck to get them switched back (had to do the "file types" "delete" and then reassociate the darned things). ARG! Wouldn't have been so bad except stuffit won't OPEN zip files. Never could figure that one out - won't open the silly things, but automatically changes the file association upon installation. go figure, huh? :) Kate

Exactely what KateTheShrew said. It DOESN'T open Zips yet associates itself with it. And it's almost IMPOSSIBLE to get rid off. I h8 that proggie deeply. Sorry. Perhaps it's great on a Mac but the PC version SUX!

Hmm... I once installed some version 5 or 6 on PC for testing purposes and it showed the "do you want me to associate..." dialog on every startup, as well as a "shut up" checkbox. Clicking "shut up" disposed of the dialogs and it did not associate with ZIPs. If the recent version no longer shows this option then it must be either a bug or really careless behaviour of the developers (worth the golden CL medal :-) In both cases you should contact the company and COMPLAIN. It is a small independent company with a good relation with their customers for many years, so I'd say it is worthwile to let them know about your problems. And by the way, SIT is a hell of a compression format. I am often trying out new compression formats, and SIT usually beats everything that I ever found. As a matter of fact, for every given compression scheme you can "construct" an artificial file that compresses perfectly, and another file that doesn't compress at all. But in real world tests, SIT is just great, especially with binary files that are hard to compress otherwise.
