Subject: The Tailor 1.5 and upgrade are now up at DAZ

ronstuff ( ) posted Fri, 06 June 2003 at 6:55 PM · edited Tue, 24 December 2024 at 7:00 PM

Just wanted those of you to know who have been waiting. I don't have details, but the upgrade from 1.1 is priced $9.95.

dlfurman ( ) posted Fri, 06 June 2003 at 7:26 PM

Why are they charging $10 to upgrade?

ronstuff ( ) posted Fri, 06 June 2003 at 7:45 PM

Apparently so. I had thought it would be free, but that was based on information some time ago, so I guess things have changed.

Desdemmonna ( ) posted Fri, 06 June 2003 at 7:48 PM

I understand Codetwister probably spent an insane amount of time and effort updating the Tailor, but 10 bucks for a product update is something I'm going to have to discuss at length with my partner...maybe I'm just being a spoiled brat but I'm used to merchants giving out ugrades for free, lol.

Crescent ( ) posted Fri, 06 June 2003 at 7:54 PM

Gee Poser 5 is an upgrade to Poser 4. Why didn't we get that upgrade free? ;-)

Desdemmonna ( ) posted Fri, 06 June 2003 at 7:56 PM

Poser 5 is more in the 'software' category...I consider Tailor more a bad ass 'utlility' along with Morph Manager, UVMapper...but I understand your point :)

JDexter ( ) posted Fri, 06 June 2003 at 8:11 PM

Considering the state Poser 5 was in, it should have been free. JDexter P.S. and yes, you should have expected that answer ;)

Zenman53186 ( ) posted Fri, 06 June 2003 at 8:39 PM

Since I actually like Poser5 and Tailor and use them both heavily, $10 bucks for compatibility is a minor cost.

milamber42 ( ) posted Fri, 06 June 2003 at 9:17 PM

The 1.5 upgrade also states the following functionality:

  • Now the characters can be viewed texturized

This feature was not in the 1.5 Release Candidate that was available for a short time.

Looks like The Tailor now has the same GL preview a Mimic 2.

lalverson ( ) posted Fri, 06 June 2003 at 9:47 PM

Odd I got the rc and mine works like 1.5 and well at thsat.

Scathdebas ( ) posted Fri, 06 June 2003 at 10:11 PM

What exactly does Tailor do?

FyreSpiryt ( ) posted Fri, 06 June 2003 at 10:45 PM

If I may, usually one pays to upgrade between versions (i.e. version 1 to version 2), but gets free updates between revisions (1.1 to 1.2, for example). But, despite the annoyance, I have to admit that the ability to transfer in batches is worth $10 to me. I've been updating V3 clothes, and transfering joint-fixing JCMs gets tedious.

Jaager ( ) posted Fri, 06 June 2003 at 10:46 PM

The Tailor is a program that translates morphs from a figure to the clothing for that figure. A lot of clothing now comes with shape morphs, but if you have a character with a body shape that clothing you wish to use does not fit, this program will generate morphs in the clothing to match those of the figure. The morphs are literal. They have no finesse. Fine for things that totally conform to the body. Not so, for things that drape or are bulky. But, it is much easier to fine tune a morph than to do a complete one from scratch. It does not replace to need for modeling skills, but it does take care of 90% of the work.

PeterWahoo ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 12:01 AM

Personally I think that sucks. Awhile ago they mistakenly released the beta version of Tailor 1.5 for FREE. Now they want $10?! At least one of the changes was to fix the problem where clothes float over the head after being tailored. That was a bug fix! Now look at other great utilities such as PBooost... Nope, we didn't need to pay for updates!

RHaseltine ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 5:49 AM

Both Photshop and Painter charged for the 5->5.5 upgrades, at full version upgrade prices. It just depends what's in it I suppose.

FishNose ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 6:14 AM

Yeah, and Director 8.5, Sound Forge 4.5, Premiere 6.5, After Effects 5.5 etc etc. All cost money of course. The functionality in Tailor 1.5 is well worth paying $10 for. I prefer not paying of course, but I can't argue with the author wanting to get back some bucks for his work. And I'm so TIRED of hearing commercials here for PBooooooooooost. Sigh. :] Fish

hauksdottir ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 6:48 AM

Fishnose, PeterWahoo is really Ron Knights, back again under his, what 6th? alias. Since he was a betatester for PBooost, he touts it whenever he can. Carolly

tonymouse ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 8:51 AM

I thought PeterW was Ron Knights, I just wasn't sure. It seem I'm not the only one who thinks so. If so he seems to be a much quiter version. Speaking of upgrades, and new features. ;)

dlk30341 ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 9:29 AM

This is all very strange...I recd an e-mail from DAZ with a download link...no charge for upgrade. Debby

toolstech ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 9:41 AM

Debby, that email says that it was sent to those who purchased Tailor 1.1 within the last 4 months. If you purchased before that it looks like you have to pay a $10 fee.

dlk30341 ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 9:55 AM

Sorry to hear that...:(...just trying to help Debbt

maclean ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 10:20 AM

So I'm not the only one who's fed up hearing Peter Wahoo rave about PBoost? The second I read that post, I thought "Not again! What is it with this guy?" I've seen half a dozen posts by him in the last couple of weeks touting PBoost. I have nothing against the program (and have never used it), but I'd be inclined NOT to buy it, because I'm so suspicious of this guy's motives. mac PS. If he's Ron Knights, he underwent a major personality change.

c1rcle ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 11:25 AM

hey he's not the only person round here who loves using PBooost & advertises it :) & no I'm not Ron Knights in disguise ;) No I don't get any cash incentives from Howard to mention a certain program whenever I can, I just want people to know what a really helpful program it is, oops there I go again ;) hehehe

maclean ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 1:43 PM

c1rcle, I have no problem whatsoever with people reccommending products. In fact, it's a great help for anyone considering a purchase to know that other people have had good (or bad) experiences with an item. It's just that it seems PW can't post in any thread at all with out bringing PBoost into it. As I said, it makes his motives highly suspicious. I would reccommend UV Mapper pro as a great program, but only in a thread connected with mapping. And even then, only to someone who does uv mapping on a daily basis. mac

RealitysPoison ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 1:44 PM

Here is my upgrade question, anyone know what happens to those of us who bought the tailor when it was here at r'osity? I dloaded the "mistake" update when Daz posted it, and it wouldn't install. I am assuming it had to do with the different installations between Daz's version and the R'osity version. (Yes, I had the first update to 1.1 that codetwister provided us installed.) Soooo....are we users who purchased it before he moved it to Daz going to be able to update? Or is it a whole new installation. Because I would willingly spend the ten bucks for the update, if it will work. But I doubt I will buy the whole program again just for the updates when I can just keep using 1.1. Curious on this one. I just threw it in my wishlist instead until I hear word.

RHaseltine ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 1:47 PM

May have been unlucky in your installation: I have Tailor from here, applied the DAZ patch and the "premature publication" 1.5 installed and worked.

steveshanks ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 2:25 PM

Well as far as i can tell its very much improved, i just did a full body morph on a catsuit for V3, and instead of selecting each morph you just select the body morph....but the thing that put me off the last version was the way the clothing would look all wrinkly after applying the morph, and morphing anything smaller just made it look awful, BUT i did this body morph based on the young morph for V3 and while its not perfect (wrinkle wise) its 95% perfect....have to try a few more to be sure but it looks like they made big improvements on how it moves the vertices...Steve PS nearly forgot did a full body morph to heavy on a PT skirt and top and that set came out real good..Steve

PeterWahoo ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 5:46 PM

Actually, to be accurate, PBooost was mentioned in threads where the subject matter lead to mention of the product. In this thread, it was a direct comparison of one utility that has been upgraded for free, while the other is not. I'm surely not the only one who resents paying the extra $10 for a utility that doesn't get used every day (Tailor), partly because of some obvious bugs. Also, there was no advanced notice of DAZ's decision to suddenly charge for the update/upgrade. Again, the previous "premature" update was free. As for the rest: some people just don't have anything more important to do with their time.

Crescent ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 7:14 PM

Ahem. Please keep the thread on track and off members. Thanks.

RealitysPoison ( ) posted Sun, 08 June 2003 at 9:56 AM

I really don't see what the big deal about charging for the upgrade are. I went ahead and bought it instead of waiting. Didn't expect it to install that easy. But after re-installed Tailor 1.0 (I just finished a hard drive reformat) The upgrade installed fine. Didn't even require me to dig out the 1.1 update to install. :) I don't by any means think that 10 is too much to pay for the added features. But I guess like everything else, if you don't want to pay for the features, then just don't get them. :D Me, I'm pleased with it, and think it was a bargain.

PeterWahoo ( ) posted Sun, 08 June 2003 at 10:23 AM

One more try: The Tailor 1.5 update/upgrade was available for free, briefly. Yes, they discovered it was a mistake, since it was a beta version. I, and others, eagerly awaited the official version of the FREE update/upgrade. Now they want $10 for it. That's a really bad PR move in my estimation. Will I pay the $10? Maybe, but only after I've corresponded directly to DAZ to let my feelings be known. (And I get my new credit card.) DAZ has always been very receptive to customer input. That is a very good lesson for any Poser merchant to remember.

RealitysPoison ( ) posted Sun, 08 June 2003 at 2:12 PM

Now see, I disagree. The "mistake" upgrade was just that, a mistake. So you are saying that because someone at Daz made a mistake, codetwister should be punished for his hard work and not get monetary compensation for his time and hard work? That is hardly fair. And the upgrade I just paid for had additional features that the one available briefly did not have. I downloaded the earlier one, and even if it would have installed for me, I still would have paid for the upgrade they just posted. People spend a lot of time and hard work to make these great programs for us. They deserve to be compensated.

toolstech ( ) posted Sun, 08 June 2003 at 2:57 PM

Okay, I'm confused now. For those who had purchased Tailor 1.1 in the last 4 months, an email was sent out with a link to free download. I downloaded and installed this, but when I launch the program it says Tailor 1.5 Release Candidate (just like the 'mistake' upgrade mentioned earlier). Is it supposed to say this? And yes I was one of those who had downloaded the mistake release earlier, and had installed it. I have since uninstalled it, reinstalled 1.1, redownloaded from the new email link and it still says Release Candidate. Just wondering.
