Hehe! :) My first to plants are finished.. X-Frog is an amazing program!

The first one, Oyoa Anios, is a fictious tree I've made. The bark is a photo from an Elm-tree (which I've made seamless of course ;) and the leaf is a high-detail-scan of a leaf from a Rowan. I'm thinking of uploading it at the Marketplace at the price of 5,50$.. doesn't this sound fair?

The second one is a Fern... it took me several (and by that I mean MANY) hours to get the leaf! As it was to large to be in my flatbed scanner (I know I could have cut in it sections but I figured it would take to long), I took 5 highdetail-photos of it and pieced them together.. The result is excellent :)
I would like to share this object with everyone, but I haven't got a website to upload it on.
If anyone is kind enough to share some bandwith and help everyone interested get this model please send me an IM.
The model has a total filesize of 1,2 MB (not zipped).

What do you think of the models in the image?

  • Thomas :)

Thanks for reading all this! (if you read it all ;)

Wow, those look terrific, Thomas. I have X-Frog Lite too, but haven't really played with it much. Great job on the leaves, both plants look VERY real. I think $5.50 is fair; you might want to look in Marketplace and see what general prices are for plants.

10 bucks each is too much. They'll never sell or you will sell very few of them. Remember there just one tree that you cannot make a new mesh from. You could sell them for anything you want actually but there is already too many over priced meshes around. Like why would somebody buy 5 trees for $50 bucks when if they looked around on the web a bit get a entire cd worth of meshes for around the same price? Remember people generally don't want to part with there hard earned cash. There always lookng for the best value. So that the secret is make it valuable and it will sell well. Think Wallmart not Sacks 5th Avenue.

What the heck are you talking about Mighty Pete? 10 bucks each? The fern I'm going to share for free and the tree is only 5,50$.. why are you saying 10 bucks each?! OF course I won't sell them for that much :)

thomaskrahn ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 5:56 PM

I'm sorry.. it's 2 MB :)

MightyPete ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 6:27 PM

Oh my mistake I guess. Where did this come from on your original post...? "50$.. doesn't this sound fair?"

MightyPete ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 6:30 PM

$5.50? it's a period not a , and the money sign always goes in front.. But since you can't edit posts here I get the idea.

nish ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 6:55 PM

Yeah, Oyoa looks very nice! $5.50 does sounds fair! I would add at least one more seamless bark (picture), so that the buyers get more options. And ofcourse they will think they are getting more then what they bergained for. [However, it's just a humble suggestion.] The ferns looks great too! I might be able to help you out with bandwidth, but has to wait a bit. Lot's of construction going on and the site is superhuge! If you don't find anyone, pls let me know within a couple of week.

nish ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 7:03 PM

And ... I do agree with Mightypete about one thing ... think wallmart not 5th Ave sacks! Bare in mind that there are way way too many free plants out there; so if you want ppl to buy it, you have to give them more then just "a plant"! :-)

BillyGoat ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 8:04 PM

Now i'd pay 6.00 for both the fern and oyoa. I'd never expect you to share the fern. And i'd like to see a tutorial on how you did it. I know you just got the program - but you sure do learn fast! Your work is incredible... and it's 'nation wide'. If you wander over to 3Dmodelz' store you'll see amazing prices for each package that has many props, addons, and textures. Talk about value for your money! Great strategy.

Nicely done Thomas.. Can't wait to see them in action.

rds ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 8:22 PM

Oh BTW I would probably try and make the plants in Vue.. There are so many ways to arrange and manipulate the plants and trees in Vue that I have not even tried yet. You can use thousand of different textures of bark and leaves. Not only that they load pretty darn fast and are not that heavy for the rendering consideration. Xfrog trees and plants are kind of heavy no? Now make me some nice buildings or unique objects and you got my interest..Just my 2 cents my friend.

Shari123 ( ) posted Sat, 07 June 2003 at 9:41 PM

Well done Thomas! I've got Xfrog lite but I haven't been working in it much. It's kind of a struggle for me. I'll buy your plants any day of the week! I can't wait to see what you come up with next!

These are really fine looking plants Thomas! Looks like you are really doing well with XFrog! Congratulations. :) Irene

Really like the fern. I have XFrog, but you really seem to have the knack for using it. Peggy

You got to try to make a perfect conifer tree. It's the tree that is lacking in this mesh world. The perfect christmas tree. If you can make that it will sell like hot cakes. It's the tree that everyone is looking for.

thomaskrahn ( ) posted Sun, 08 June 2003 at 2:02 PM

I'll make a perfect coniffer... naa.. j/k.. I'll TRY to make one ;)

thomaskrahn,Since you are getting a good grasp on XFrog,I have a question.... Can XFrog handel making a very complex tree such as a banyan tree(a form of fig)? SWAMP

nish ( ) posted Mon, 09 June 2003 at 12:20 AM

3 plants for $10, it should sell like hot cakes. The second plant looks exceptionaly nice. I would go with 3 same type (Big, if that is) trees for the package. Coniffer, no doubt in my mind will sell like hot cake, but it itself can be a package ... a "perfect" coniffer with it's decorating accesories. ... Gosh, Thomas, your customers will shoot me now! :-) Regards nish PS. Once again, how you wanna sell your hard work (art) is entirely up to you. A suggestion is just a harmless good will wish for ya! :-)

tradivoro ( ) posted Mon, 09 June 2003 at 10:27 AM

Great work Thomas, very realistic plants...

rollmops ( ) posted Mon, 09 June 2003 at 12:27 PM

Nice work ,Thomas :-) @ Swamp :You have to combine several groups of stems and leafs.Combine them in a modeller app or define a small premodelled "tree" as a branch of a complex system of braches in xfrog.Anyhow you won`t get a convincing result in only one step. cheers rollmops :-)

...yippi ah yeah or something like that...

ArtJosephNito ( ) posted Mon, 09 June 2003 at 2:51 PM

You're Oyoa is not fictitious, it is like the tamarind or sampaloc tree. The diff. is that the bark of the tamarindsampaloc has many and deep ridges. You did a good job and the price is fair.
