Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 14 10:48 am)
Finally I can speak out!, I've had the wonderful opportunity to work with the fine folks at Reiss Studio and aid them in the development of this plugin. It's a great tool and integrates seemlessly into MAX. The results? Well check for yourself.
The above figures were created in Poser and using the Riess Plugin, imported into MAX. Enough said.
I would highly recommend anyone who wants to take Poser figures to the next level to checkout this plugin. [jezz, I sould like an infomercial don't I?]
I can't thank Josh, Jack and all the cool folks at Riess for allowing me to help.
Daniel
Daniel, very cool picture! Is anyone (Riess, Caligari or CL) working on a similar tool for TrueSpace? I'd seen a press release earlier in the year (might've even been last December) stating that Caligari and CL were working in partnership ... but it didn't say what they were working ON in partnership ...
Aleks, We're actually working through setting up the upgrade process as we speak. if you send e-mail to service@reiss-studio.com, maybe we can use you as a test case to do the first upgrade when it's ready. Daneil, no problem on the typo ;) Spaghead, we're not involved in a truespace, and I'm not sure what else Curious has worked out. cheers, -Josh
Please don't let this message throw water on the announcement as I for one am very excited and desperately waiting for this functionality, but I have seen way to many promises/statements regarding this type of functionality between Max and Poser for too long. And the reference to suport and help from CL leaves me doubting this more. They have let me down way too many times in this department (Pro Pack, P5). ANd yes, I know you guys are a separate company. Is there any way that you can provide more descriptions and/or show off the functionality of this product (video of the plugin in action, put up the documentation for review). Maybe have a tutorial created and put up at 3DBuzz. I am sure many share a similar desire. I know that I will not be making this purchase until I can see some objective third party reviews (magazines) and/or demo. Please do not take this as an insult for the obvious effort you guys have put into this product. I just need more than a press release to make this purchase, ESPECIALLY because it is related to Poser 5. - Ray

Ray, I don't take it as an insult at all. So far we've had great feedback from the people using the plugin, and I think it's always a good choice to find out about a product when you go to buy it. We have a tutorial which we're giong to be putting up. The guys from 3-axis actually got happy about the plugin and put together a great step-by-step. I love the tutorial they did, because it also contains a basic cloth tutorial as well. we're still formatting it, but you can see a preview of the tutorial at www.reiss-studio.com/article/articleview/51 we'll also look into getting the documentation online for download. cheers! -JoshIs this a separate product from the intended Curious Labs upgrade to Poser 5 to include Pro Pack functionality. From the curious labs website- 'The Poser Pro Pack plug-ins are not currently updated to work with Poser 5. Poser 5 will be updated to include the hosting plug-in support, but some high level functionality found in Poser 5, will not be available in the 3rd party host applications. Full details on the update to the plug-ins and its projected delivery schedule will be available soon'

Hi tbird, There will be an upgrade discount available, and we should be able to announce the price in the next few days. We're actually looking for some people who are interested in purchasing to test the upgrade system in advance, if anyone is interested, please e-mail service@reiss-studio.com thanks! -JoshHi Clearstar, We are all for making the plugins smarter as we upgrade them. We're especially interested in looking at all the "little" things that really are not that little when you work with them every day! That was one of the big hit lists for the upgrades. We did it with the max plugin in a few ways (turns out with the new update you save 390mb when rendering a mapped vicky! and about 250mb just when loading) I strongly encourage everyone who uses the lightwave plugins to send mail to service@reiss-studio.com, and let us know about any issues you have. This is the best chance to get them fixed, and as our max users will testify, our main goal is to listen to how we can make these easy to use. Also, we ususally take the people who send us the best explained feedback, and get them involved in the beta program when it's available. cheers! -Josh
Hi Billy3d, You can use this in some ways with Poser 4, but a valid Poser 5 installation is needed. The new features in the plugin require us to use the Poser5 libraries which means you do have to have Poser 5 on disk, there are also more features coming which should make this even more exciting. Here is the workflow we are recommending for people who want to keep working with Poser 4. 1) Install Poser 5 2) Use Poser 5's multiple runtime feature to add your poser 4 runtime directory 3) keep working Poser 4 Now you can keep working in poser 4, and the plugin will be able to load your files. You might need to just open, and save the files again from poser 5 before import, but you should be able to keep using poser 4 in this way. cheers! -Josh
Hi Ed, We actually just installed Cinema 4d v8. I should be able to offer more information soon. also, anyone with items they would like to see fixed in the c4d plugin, should send e-mail to service@reiss-studio.com (this is how we determine which issues to update, and also where we find out about people for beta testing) cheers, -Josh

Lead Engineer (BodyStudio 2.0 for 3ds max plugin)
Jack, DO you know of any third party (magazine/web sites/etc) that may have already obtained this software or were provided it by you guys that may have or are planning an independent review? I know you guys are proud of this product, but I am looking for an objective review before making a purchase. Normally I would wait til Siggraph and search you guys out there this year, but unfortunately, delivery deadlines are keeping all of my team from the show this year... Thanks, - Ray
Anyone know if curious labs is planning to update their poser plugin to work with poser 5? I am currently enjoying a harmonious relationship between poser 5 and max 5, I am not using the cloth simulator in poser 5. For those of you itching to use your wonderful poser 5 creations in max, here's what I did. I had a my poser pro pack installed, and I renamed the poser.dta file to poserold.dta and copied it to the poser 5 folder. I completely uninstalled poser pro pack. I downloaded the updated max plugin installer as that works with max 4. I then installed the max plugin by manually specifying the 3ds max folder (the max 5 directory), and manually specified where poser was (my poser 5 folder). Now comes the fun part. To export characters from poser 5 to max, you have to rename the poser 5 poser.dta file to something like posernew.dta, and rename the poser 4 dta file (poserold.dta) to poser.dta. Then you can insert poser 5 scenes (saved as poser3 pz3 not poser 5 pzz) into max. For simplicty's sake, I created a couple of .bat files that do the copying for me so I just click on the right one and viola I either run poser 5 or use them in max. Haven't tested this with the poser 5 hair.... if anyone finds this useful, let me know.

Reiss Studio Releases BodyStudio 2.0; Software Allows Poser 5 Content to be Incorporated with 3ds max
OAKLAND, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 12, 2003--Reiss Studio, in cooperation with Curious Labs(TM), the publisher of Poser(R), has developed and released BodyStudio(TM) 2.0 for Windows(TM). BodyStudio seamlessly integrates Poser 3D character animation technology into Discreet(R) 3ds max(TM). This innovative plug-in software allows Poser users to easily render and playback Poser animations directly inside of 3ds max.
Artists that work with 3D software will notice the many improvements that have been made from the original version of the popular Pro Pack plug-in for 3ds max. Reiss Studio is a leading developer of 3D plug-ins for Poser translation software.
"The Windows version of the first BodyStudio was a big success," states Josh Reiss, developer and CEO of Reiss Studio. "We have taken the suggestions from our customers and the recommendations from our development team and come up with many features that make a fantastic upgrade."
Some of the new features of BodyStudio 2.0 are:
-- Playback of Poser characters
-- Playback of Poser 5 dynamic cloth
-- Support for the latest versions of Poser and 3ds max
-- Translation of Poser base shaders to Max shaders
-- Scale conversion between Poser and 3ds max
-- Importation of Poser Lights
-- Access to the largest source of pre-built 3D characters and props in the world.
"It used to take teams of people to create characters," states Reiss, "but now the artist can work with pre-built and pre-rigged characters and easily drop them into their Max scene and start rendering."
BodyStudio is being used by many professionals for web, game, television and video production.
"BodyStudio has allowed us to easily integrate Poser assets into our production pipeline, giving us convenient access to Poser-based content," says Chris DiNardo, animator at Turner Studios. "It allows us to offer more options to our clients and gives us cost-effective solutions to our production needs."
"With 200 pots of coffee and BodyStudio we created 30 'actors' and used them for 'extras' for our 70's style epic in only a month," says Ben Stokes of the San Francisco based video production company, Mission Control. Stokes used BodyStudio for a music video for an upcoming album from the popular musical artist, DJ Shadow titled, "Mashin on the Motorway." This video presented a challenge of creating a variety of characters to be involved in a car chase. "We had the unique ability to create characters based on real people, including Josh (DJ Shadow) and others," states Stokes. "Josh was quite happy with the results and used still frames from the video for the album cover art."
For a limited time, BodyStudio is available at the introductory price of $179.00, and can be purchased at www.reiss-studio.com.
