THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Clarification on June challenge, please.

Phantast ( ) posted Mon, 16 June 2003 at 10:05 AM · edited Sun, 01 December 2024 at 3:37 PM

In the challenge topic thread it says choose a song. I see several people are choosing pieces of music that are not songs. Is it a song or any piece of music that's allowed?

Slakker ( ) posted Mon, 16 June 2003 at 10:11 AM

Whether it has words or not, it's commonly referred to as a song...So yea, any piece of music is allowed.

As far as I know any piece of music is a song.

i looked up the word "song" out of curiosity. apparently it does only refer to a piece of music that has vocals. 1. a short metrical composition intended or adapted for singing, esp. one in rhymed stanzas; a lyric; a ballad. 2. a musical piece adapted for singing or simulating a piece to be sung: Mendelssohn's Songs without Words. but the word is commonly used to mean music with or without vocals.

To most musicians a "song" would be interchangable with a "piece." Musicians "play" a song. Singers will sing one.

Being a musician myself I fully agree with you runwolf.

However, this is not correct. It may be the case in pop music, because 99.999% of pop music consists of songs. To call a fugue, prelude, etude, concerto, string quartet or symphony a song would be ludicrous.

Phantast: The general concensus is that the forum makes what they will of any challenge. In this case it would seem that the forum decided that any 'musical' piece was fair game, while at the same time not necessarily expressing how that 'music' affected them emotionally, as required by the challenge. Generally speaking, if a render fails to express the spirit of any challenge, and is therefore 'off topic', the forum will comment in the appropriate manner. For instance; if a challenge restricted the use of Poser and a member used to many poser elements, the forum would comment in much the same way as you have done. This self-imposed regulation has worked for many months now, at least since I've been a member, and I don't see it changing any time soon Hope this helps. Regards The Bryster

I'm sorry, but... the Challenge Theme says "sound & emotion". Not song, but "sound".

Doublecrash: I don't mean to be picky but, the text below is a direct quote from the challenge link in the header box atthe top of the page..... '''"Sound & Emotion" So many of my inspirations come when I'm listening to Music. Choose a song, Depict what it does for you.'''' To clarify, it says......"CHOOSE A SONG..." The Bryster

As in Aerosmith's "Same Old Song And Dance".

I'm happy with Bryster's ruling on this.
