Subject: The new Renderosity: slow and wasteful

JohnRender ( ) posted Wed, 18 June 2003 at 8:45 AM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 6:07 AM

Okay, so the colors have changed. I suppose that will take some getting used to... eventually. But, those **** pull-down boxes to find the forums have go to go! Now! Let's see: I click on the box, then I look for the "OT Fourm": I click once, then twice to scroll down the list, then I click on the "OT Forum" entry, then I click on the "Go" button. That's 4 clicks and hunting. The old method: scroll down the page, click ONCE on the "OT Forum" link and I'm there. 1 click and no hunting. The new method: clicking the pull-down box seems to load a page called "indexprocess.ez". Um, I wanted the OT Forum, not a "indexprocess" thing. But, I have to wait 10-15 seconds as this process thing does whatever it's doing. The old way: clicking a link loads the actual page. I want to switch to the Poser forum: The new method: click on pull-down box, and so on... 4 or 5 clicks The old method: scroll up the page, 1 click. So what? What's 4 or 5 clicks per person, really? Multiply that by the 1500 people online at the same time and that starts to add up to some seriously wasted time. And the 10-15 seconds of waiting for the page to load? Same thing- multiply by 1500 people... more wasted time. But, as a past poster mentioned, the colors blend with the new logo, so that's all that really matters. Oh, and if the colors blend with sponsor's banners, then that's even more better.

We will be monitoring this as well. Look for us to come back to you with several weeks asking how you like the drop down for forums. Also we will be monitoring the color changes and most likely if there is a majority color scheme, we may consider this to be our default colors. Asking for patience in trying something new for the next 2 months. thanks tammy

{Look for us to come back to you with several weeks asking how you like the drop down for forums. } Are you really asking us to put up with this for several weeks before you guys think about whether or not to change it? It's been less than 12 hours and I just said it was wasteful to use mutiple clicks to get at something that used to take one click. How will several weeks change it? Will these clicks magically reduce themselves in this time?

So what "brainiac" decided the colours needed changing anyway?

we are not making you keep the default colors for 2 months...we are saying that we would like to keep the default colors for a couple of months - members can change their background and text colors to whatever they prefer and they are... we have 219 different background colors from members already. tammy

doh, Tammy, I introduced a colleague of mine to Renderosity yesterday who is a total newbie on the web. I gave him the URL and needless to say I'm sure you know the initial reactions of a 42 year old history teacher who wears glasses - regardless of the fact that you've already got 219 colors packing.

To me, the problem of leaving the site up this way for two months while you all decide is that the people on the outside looking in are going to have issues same as we do, but they won't change their colors or re-arrange their browser or change their font sizes to match, they will just move on. That won't help the store, the gallery or anything else.

BTW, I also noticed on the top bar if you are not logged in, the links at the top are just thrown every which way and that is in the IE default settings. Makes it look very amateurish.

{we have 219 different background colors from members already.} Is that 219 unique background colors or 219 people have changed the background from the default color scheme? Okay, so 219 different colors out of 100,000 members is nothing, right? That's 0.022% of the members, right? This must prove that people just LOVE the new color scheme, right? This could also prove: 1) Only 219 people have figured out how to find "My Profile" and change the colors. 2) Only 219 people have figured out a color combination that works for them, but doesn't clash with the permanently mud-brown side bar. 2) Only 219 people have filled out the "Marketing Preferences" so their colors will save. (The other X number of people don't want to fill out the information, so their colors can't be saved.) 3) Y number of people have quit the site in disgust over the fact that their colors were arbitrarily changed on them after 2 years of using their own easy-for-them-to-read colors, never realizing that they could be changed back. Ya gotta love statistics taken from a website's database... they prove so much. Not.
