THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: This little devil impatience

derjimi ( ) posted Sun, 29 June 2003 at 3:05 PM · edited Sat, 02 November 2024 at 4:39 PM

For sure you know all that feeling... watching a render to be complete, following that antialiasing line with your eyes - and realise that it will take a couple of hours to be done... Man, I hate watching the line crawling over the screen, because I want that image to be released as quick as possible. Mainly because I think that always the latest work is my best. Probably you feel the same about your projects. We should found a self-help group for that darn waiting problem! ;-) Greets, Jimi

And.....we must ask the question, "How many of you have taken a screen capture to look at?". Diane

derjimi ( ) posted Sun, 29 June 2003 at 3:28 PM

waves his arms Hehe - right! Often I take screenshots of that unfinished work because I found some errors or flaws I made and I test to erase them with PSP. Unfortunately, I can't reproduce it as good in the finished image. Nobody knows, but that drives me crazy sometimes. :-) J.

bknoh ( ) posted Sun, 29 June 2003 at 3:41 PM

I do the exact same thing!

MadDog31 ( ) posted Sun, 29 June 2003 at 4:26 PM

I know what you mean. I am growing impatient trying to get my latest image finished...I see everyone else throwing up awesome stuff every 3 days and makes me want to hurry...haha...after this month, I'm gonna cut back to 2-3 images a month until it gets cold outside so I can do more quality work. Have any of you ever had the problem of working on a cool image, only to come up with an image that seems even cooler in your mind and then you can't wait to get the current one done just to start the next? I'm feeling that right now. :- MD

Aldaron ( ) posted Sun, 29 June 2003 at 5:48 PM

MadDog, I have 3 half-done projects. Does that give you any idea of doing something, finding something new and cool in either the forum or your mind and just have to work on it just a bit? :)

How about when you yet to 73% AA and suddenly see a glaring error that needs fixing...:} done that, been there....:

Ohh..it is usually at about 98% that I notice the table is 1/2 inch off the floor and has the shadow to prove it.

GROINGRINDER ( ) posted Sun, 29 June 2003 at 6:36 PM

I don't understand this screen cap thing. I must be missing an essential part of the Bryce experience. I try to get away with doing plop renders as much as possible, or using the solo mode.

When impatient...do something else....let it render overnight...watching the render line is like watching the dots on the de-frag screen........!

LOL, watching your render anti-alias, or your hard drive defrag is a lot more fun than most of the TV shows on now. Glad to know I'm not the only one to do this!

catlin_mc ( ) posted Sun, 29 June 2003 at 7:27 PM

I just recently set an image to render on my other machine, it was going to take 18 hours. When it finally finished I discovered that part of the image had a really wierd artifact around the volumeric materials I'd used. Rather than do it all again I did a plop and fixed it in PhotoShop. So from my heart dropping to the floor I managed to repair it, and whew thank goodness for that. I also turn the monitor off when it's one of those long renders otherwise I think I would commit harikari. 8) Catlin

catlin_mc ( ) posted Sun, 29 June 2003 at 7:30 PM

"Watching your render anti-alias, or your hard drive defrag" Is also know as being a geek or of needing a life, but I don't care 'cos I do it too. 8) Catlin

shadowdragonlord ( ) posted Sun, 29 June 2003 at 10:37 PM

Aye, I had the same problem for YEARS now, but I picked up this great book. It's all about this strange local habit they have here in Auburn, something called SLEEP. I know, I know, at first I was skeptical, too! But I tried it, it's like a magic timewarp. Here's how : 1. Finish your image, layout, textures... 2. Push the big shiny button for rendering. 3. Go lay down and go to sleep. Read a good book, this makes it happen faster/slower based on the same quality/speed math we see inside the Volume materials. 4. Wake up, and boom! Your image is DONE! 5. Proceed straight to postwork, or 'Rosity, to post the now-done time-warped-to image. Note, if Step 4 doesn't work, repeat Step 3 until Step 4 works. I am NOT responsible for any adverse effects! It's just an IDEA!

ocddoug ( ) posted Sun, 29 June 2003 at 10:59 PM

I render to screen, so I stare at the screen a lot lol. If it's taking forever, I turn off my monitor and let it render while I sleep.

derjimi ( ) posted Sun, 29 June 2003 at 11:12 PM

I've heard of that sleep thingie before. But I can't leave my render alone - what if some gremlins come and doing helter skelter with the pixels while I'm away? No Ma'am, my Bryce and me hold together in good, in bad and especially in long times. ;) Sometimes I feel dizziy and close my eyes, sure. Plop rendering is fun also. Sometimes I plop render the whole image instead of hitting the big render button one time. Plop render makes it feel like going faster when you choose smaller areas to render, Abd fixing flaws with plop rendering is the best I can think of. Oh - I think the progress bar just changed from 68% to 69%! This is sooo exciting! J.

Ang25 ( ) posted Sun, 29 June 2003 at 11:18 PM

I'm certain when I'm not looking my render line pauses till I look back at it. :-D

MuddyGrub ( ) posted Sun, 29 June 2003 at 11:22 PM

I'm with Shadow on the sleep thing. But what I really hate is when I get up in the morning and turn the monitor on, and it says 20% done when I was expecting it was finished!

ocddoug ( ) posted Sun, 29 June 2003 at 11:25 PM

I've had the power go off during a render (it was going on two days, I think). Then I had to start all over :-(

derjimi ( ) posted Sun, 29 June 2003 at 11:35 PM

And some wise words to think about: === If you stare into your screen long enough, your screen stares back at you. === Did Nietzsche knew Bryce? ;-)

EYECON ( ) posted Mon, 30 June 2003 at 10:26 PM

ahh the rendering impatience.... actually rendering is a great way to getting things done! me for example im living on my own... nobody to cook for me, so thats when i render things! hahahah funny right? also i do my reders at night, living in a pretty hot environment (philippines) is not good for the computer, well i could have my aircon on but then that would be another electrical bill higher... so its overnight renders for me... not if i use cinema4d where its just 2 hours render... with all volumetrics, and radiosity... heheheh well best idea i gues is sleep it over... but be sure to save it first. oh another thing i do, ususlly i do the render, wake up after 2 hours, save it, turn off my computer to restart its system and finish the render... it turns faster that way, well at least the way i work on it

When you have a 5 day render, have to leave the computer alone and go about your business. Thats 5 nights with the internal fan going. Does wonders for your sleep.

Lol, if she was your wife's sister she wouldn't have to be married to be your sister in law, so now we can deduce that she is your brother's wife. :-D and that you have a brother. Ang

Bryster, you're great, man! I was thinking I was the only one to watch mesmerized the dots while the system is defragging, LOL :) I took the habit to render overnight(s). In fact, I just can't stand anymore the sight of the white line... it remembers me that movie with K Sutherland and J Roberts... "Flatliners", I think. :) Plus, it helps a lot to preserve your visits to Rosity galleries and forums for when your image is rendering... here the time passes so smoothly... S.

Gosh... so my giddy happiness was shortlived... I'm again the only one who watches his system defrag... retreats sadly to watch some dots changing position S.

derjimi ( ) posted Fri, 04 July 2003 at 7:55 AM

Don't worry - I do watch, too. And I make bets if the blue or red dots win. But mostly I don't defrag anymore. 80 GB harddisks are quicker formatted than defragged... ;-) J.

catlin_mc ( ) posted Fri, 04 July 2003 at 10:11 AM

Ok I got to own up, I too watch the defrag..........I feel that if I don't it will do something wrong. 8) Catlin
