THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: How do I open a door?

bknoh ( ) posted Sun, 29 June 2003 at 3:40 PM · edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 11:23 AM

I know this is most likely a silly, simple question, but I have no idea how to make a cabinet door openable on a piece I am making. Diane

Posable, right? Here's how. The sphere is now your pivot point(or hinge). Rotate it along it's Y axis to open and close the cabinet door.

I am no expert, not even close but I would (if the door is its own primative) change the origin handle to where you want the rotation of the door to not move. and then rotate the door using the y-axis. HTH I'll go see if I can make a screen shot, don't hold your breath tho.

That's another way of doing it, but the linking method allows the cabinet to be moved around. If you don't actually want to move the cabinet around, that's the better way to do it(reduces poly count+objects).

Thank you..that is about how I decided to go. I made a "hinge" cylinder and will rotate that as you did the sphere. Diane

I like that hinge thing, didn't know about that. Much better than my way.

You can do away with the sphere and just move the origin point to where you want it to pivot from. If you click on the "A" to bring up the object attributes dialog you should see something that says show origin, or something like that. Check it and exit out of the object attributes dialog and you should see a green dot. You can place that wherever you want the pivot point to be. I have found that if you have grouped objects you need to ungroup them, set your origins and linking, then regroup leaving out the children. By children I mean the linked objects. The objects they are linked to are the parents. If you do not ungroup before you assign linking, then you get strange rotations when you go to animate.

Thank you GROINGRINDER, thats good information.

After much hair pulling I was able to make this. It had nice little knobs, too...but they didn't move well. At least I am part of the way there. I had to go with the point of origin idea. Thank you all! Diane

I'm still tempted to say what was on my mind when I say the thread's title(Well, you turn the knob...).

Ang25 ( ) posted Sun, 29 June 2003 at 10:46 PM

group the knobs to the doors. That should keep them in place. Very nice cabinet! Is this a bryce object? I could see where it would be a hair puller. A lot of detail involved in it. Love antevark's joke about how to open a door, lol. Ang

Yes it is a Bryce object. I can only build in Bryce and Poser. :( Yes, I have to regroup the doors and knobs and then move the points again. There are 3 tables, a bench and a chair to go with the cabinet. I also saved the bottom cabinet as a separate piece. All will be up in free stuff soon. Diane

there's pivot points? M (learn a new thing everyday)

Me too. I just rotate and reposition.
