Subject: WIP Freebie: Freckle-faced computer nerd

In case anyone's wondering, yes, I am doing this for attention. This is beyond wanting a warm fuzzy; I have a bizarre psychological addiction. I'm woman enough to admit it. If you can't stand that, go ahead and leave now, you can still have the freebie when it's done. ^_~

So, I'm making a V3 avatar for myself, and I need a skin texture. Problem. I'm a freckle-faced computer nerd. Valentin's lovely Joelle is close, but a too tanned. I mentioned freckle-faced computer nerd, right? Goths put on two inches of clown white trying to emulate my skintone, and they still miss. I even THINK about going outside, I sunburn so bad that boiled lobsters look at me and go "Yow, that's gotta hurt." So, I can make a texture, no biggie.
And, here's the result. Hair and glasses won't be included, texture and character will. Planning on my usual terms: use it however you want, let me mooch derivatives, and don't be a jerk (and no one has since I started including that. :) ). There's some seamline issues, but not bad. And, I've got time to fix at least some issues if you guys see anything.
So, um, comments? What needs to be fixed before I cut this girl loose?

I am not a texture critic, so I can offer no advice, but I sure do want her...I like her look. Good job!

BonBonish ( ) posted Thu, 03 July 2003 at 7:05 AM

I am not a texture expert, but I would like to have her. I like her timid look very much. As far as I can see from the picture you posted the freckles are blackish. I think I would prefer orange hued freckes :). BonBonish

I'm running a little late, but I wanted to post a body pic as well. See y'all this afternoon!

Woa! Cute! Is she a good representation of you, Fyre? I really like seeing characters that are based on real people. They come out looking so much more believable and more individual than characters which have been made by twidling dials without reference to anything but whether one likes the effect.

A very nice avatar, and a nice skin texture. I have to agree with Bonbonish that if possible, a variant on freckle color would be nice, but I like what you have done. I have no talent for skin tones. Thanks for sharing, on multiple levels }-)

Very nice texture! I'd definitely like to have it. :)

pdxjims ( ) posted Thu, 03 July 2003 at 9:27 AM

To lighten the texture, try two things. First, pull the texture into a good paint program and lighten it there, and maybe adjust the hue a very little bit. The other option is to play with the ambient color. Lightening the ambient will often lighten the texture, while producing a nice effect on the skin. She needs a tad more skin sheen too, but that's my own personal preference. BTW, though the glasses say "nerd", the rest says "beuatiful woman." Very good job!

Mask does a real nice freckle texture, (the pack has 3 in actually) but i think you got this looking good, if being a nerd depends on the time spent on the PC then i'm a nerd too just wish i was as good looking :o)....Steve

Great Big WOLF WHISTEL, your one Hot Mamma of a computer nerd!!

I really like this character! Perfect for those fair, freckled Irish lasses. Now how about a mil kids texture to match? ;)

FyreSpiryt ( ) posted Thu, 03 July 2003 at 7:19 PM

Gee, thanks for all the personal compliments as well as the texture ones. ^_^ She's recognizable as me, but quite idealized. My face is more lopsided, I'm a bit shorter, and as I am IRL right now, the Rubenesque dial should be dialed up to about 0.3. ^~; (In the above pic, it's at 0.1) She also renders better than I photograph; I come out looking all red and splotchy. ^~ I'll play with the freckle color a bit and see how they look a little more orange. Depending how I like it, I may put those up separately as well. The body shot was done in a darker light than the headshot. The texture, like the person it's based on, is pretty sensitive to light; it washes out in a bright white. I'll see how well it converts to V2/mil-kids. If it doesn't need too much touch-up, I can post the variation too. :)

Freckle-faced computer nerd... For a second I thought you were talking about me :) Add 30 pounds and green eyes to your avatar image and you have a pic of me :)

I made a freckled Michael named 'Liam' for my Shades of Michael set. I was aiming for a good irish 'turkey egg' freckle on very pale skin, with a little bit of tan grin To Make the freckles Using Photoshop 6 Used my base skin texture (Albert, also in the SHOM). Lightened and desaturated the base texture. Made 2 new layers - small freckles and large freckles small freckles - filled layer with white. Added 30 gausian noise (monochromatic). 4 ish Gaussian blur. Then 15 Gaussian noise, 2 gaussian blur. Adjusted brightness and contrast to get sharper spots. Set layer to 'color burn' and opacity to about 5, erased unwanted areas using soft brush large freckles - handpainted in larger freckles using soft brush. Set layer characteristics same as Small freckles layer Hope that helps some! and BTW, with dark hair your avatar looks almost exactly like an old schoolmate of mine

She's up on my website, and I'll be posting her to freestuff here and a few other places shortly. 4MB download, free for any form of render. Enjoy. I just hope she remembered to put on sunscreen. ^_~;
