Subject: Meaning of "Ranking images"...

ratto ( ) posted Mon, 07 July 2003 at 3:05 AM · edited Wed, 27 November 2024 at 11:31 PM

Well.. yesterday I've received an IM from my friend Francesc (Enax) asking me why now I don't want rankings on my photos. My answer is simple: my gallery is full of "Excellent".. then I think the ranking is loosing its meaning.. (maybe?) My question to the moderators is: can U explain here the real meaning of "ranking images"? BTW, for me the real important thing is the comment on the image.. :) Thanks for any answer to my question!! :)) Soon, and always thank you for the warmness of U all!! :) Ale :)

I don't rank images, I have never let my images be ranked. Is there a "real meaning" behind it? None that I can figure out.... My answer is simple: my gallery is full of "Excellent".. then I think the ranking is loosing its meaning.. (maybe?) If the ranking doesn't mean much then I think that idea is very correct. :~) Hugz Ale.....

Ranking? Well, I cannot properly rank some images of other members, since there are very little and limited categories in that dropdown menu. Considering my images, I still have not made an "excellent" shot (or discovered any excellent fractal spot); but thanks to the friends here, I have some "excellent"s in the gallery.. Actually I frequently feel ashamed when my images ranked as excellent against other excellent ones. Then, why there is a permission for ranking under all my images? Honestly, I never thought about it conciously (strange!).. But I connot deny, it feels good sometimes.. And I take these rankings as a measure of my personal progress (or decline :-)).. The most important thing for me is to share and to be appreciated for it... and ALL the friends here are doing it very well. Ranking may not be necessary, but it is not such a bad thing I guess?

It's a beautiful thing!!! :) Simply speaking, I look the comments and I don't care about the ranking.. :)) And I wanted to hear also the point of view of the other friends :) Thank you!! :)

Comments are very important for me, and ranking as Sinan says isn't a bad thing.

My gallery is full of excellents... gee, what a problem? :-) I do know what you mean though. My approach to ranking other people's work is simple, I usually only rank what I really like. I look at a lot of gallery images but unless it appeals to me personally, I seldom rank it. But, what that means is that I rank based on personal preference, not on quality or expertise, which I am not actually "qualified" to be ranking on anyway. So, when I rank a posting, it is done just to let the creator know that I liked the work. On the flip side, when I get a ranking on one of my shots, I take it the same way. I figure that that person just likes my image and I must admit that I feel a certain level of "achievement" when I get an excellent. Good question, I'd say, take it for what it is, a general compliment for your work. Doc

ya for me, i think people only rank images they like, so ya they're only going to rank them as excellent, i take them as my own top twenty ranking type thing. so i can see which of my images are better then others. ofcourse soem of them just have to do with the lack of thum apeal or the amount of people who visited vs posts. but whatever. i don't think any of my "excellent" pics are any better then anybody elses, that's for sure. but it's nice for personal ref. Well, I have to say I've been meaning to ask you the very same question Francesc asked, Ale :) As for me, it is what it says in the box: "ALLOW viewers to rate image" I don't consider it as something done for me (the comments are for me) but for thier freedom of choice. The only ocassions I ban the rating is when I dedicate an image to someone - I just feel that's more 'appropriate' then, don't ask me why... :))) Anyway, whatever the artist's decision about ranking his/her art is, I fully respect it. I too, rank just the images I really like :)))
