when i apply a texture, details dont show up very much. is there a way to get them to show up better apart from lighting?

lighting is really the key... but other than that you could alter the textures in a paint program and change there brightness level

If you're rendering in Poser 5/FireFly, try decreasing the min shading rate in the rendering options. Also make sure that the maximum texture size is at least equal to the size of the textures you use.
