THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: The (New?) Bryce 5 Minimum System Requirements

aprilgem ( ) posted Wed, 16 July 2003 at 11:14 PM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 11:13 AM

I have no idea if this question has already been posted; I did a search and couldn't find anything like it, so here goes: I saw on Corel's site that the price of Bryce 5 just went down to less than $80. Having only worked with the free Bryce 3D I got from a magazine CD cover, I figured what the hell I'll buy it, and I ordered from a retailer I trust. Once I got my hands on the box (which looks different from the original Bryce 5 box, btw), I noticed that the minimum system requirements are Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Just my luck -- I'm on Windows 98. I could have sworn there were people on 98 using Bryce 5, and I searched around in this forum and found, yes, references to people using Bryce 5 on Windows 98. But this seems to be a new Bryce 5 -- new price, new box,... new system requirements? Will the Bryce 5 I bought work on 98? I don't want to open up the box and find out the hard way; I need to be able to return this box unopened if the answer is no.

i put bryce on an old computer i had before i got my new one, and it had windows 98...so, i didnt have any problems, but you may want to wait and make sure from others. hope it works for you!

I emailed corel's customer service, so as soon as I get a reply I'll let you know what they have to say about it. brholte

? Did you try installing it ? The reason it says windows 2k/xp is because it is preferable to have os based memory management. Otherwise you get a lot of memory issues. But up untill 15 days ago I used bryce 5 on windows 98 without conflict.

aprilgem ( ) posted Wed, 16 July 2003 at 11:45 PM

Thanks, Brholte! I really appreciate that. :-) Woodhurst, I hope so, too! Ornlu, I didn't try installing it yet because it would mean opening the box. I don't plan on getting 2000 or XP any time soon, so if it doesn't work on 98, I'll return the box unopened.

It should work, and if it doesn't, then, well, sell it on eBay. And seriously, check the prices on eBay. Last I checked, they were higher than retail.

I used Bryce 5 on Windows 98 also. AS

AprilGem.... It should work with no problems if you have more then 256mb of ram then you wont have to worry too much about the memory issue,And I would save it because you will be upgrading to XP within the next year or so because we all will have to,That is if we want to be able to keep up with technology and the new software coming out....I do not have my WindozeXP installed yet due to some hefty projects that I am involved with but I hope to upgrade to XP soon so I can run Poser5 on my main Machine....If you got it for under 80$ that is 270$ less then what I paid so keep it....

I use Bryce 5 on Win 98SE and Win ME all the time. See the "YAFW" thread above. But my copy of B5 is over two years old. I don't know if they did something with the coding in the current version to make it ONLY work with XP and 2K. "Memory Issue?" What memory issue?? When I first got B5 I had 64 megs of ram. Worked fine. Slow, but fine LOL!

This begs the question....."have they actually changed the program configuration"? I know it's a long shot but maybe they have with all the other changes they've made recently. AprilGem, I think I'd wait and see what brholte comes back with. Cheers Catlin

Wow... thanks for responding, everyone. :-) I'd really like to see what Corel's customer service tells brholte says before I open the box, but when the weekend arrives, I have a funny feeling I won't be able to wait. Having read everyone's answers and thought about it some more, I will assume that my Bryce 5 is no different from the original and that I can safely install it using Win98 as my OS. Reason #1: If it were a different Bryce 5, wouldn't it have a .# after it, like 5.1, 5.2, etc.? Reason #2: I will keep my Bryce 5 whether or not it works on Win98. Reason #3: I'm dying to try Bryce 5 this weekend. Reason #4: If it works on Win98, I think I have plenty of RAM to get by. BTW... did you all know Corel has dropped the Mac version of Bryce? There was no Mac version on Corel's Bryce 5 page, and that's part of the reason I wondered about Win98 and the Bryce 5 minimum system requirements.

foleypro ( ) posted Sat, 19 July 2003 at 8:39 AM

Yep...And I can almost say that with that move they just lost thousands if not Hundreds of Thousands of Customers whether they be Mac users or PC users....They would need to grovel very well if they wanted me to buy anything from them again...I pray they sell Bryce to someone who will re-code and let us be able to make our own specialised Plugins/Modules so we could customise Bryce for our Personal way we use Bryce...IE....Say for another $50 you can upgrade to a faster rendering enmgine or say for $100 you could buy the Module to Import Poser figures and scenes and animations complete with Textures...

catlin_mc ( ) posted Sat, 19 July 2003 at 8:49 AM

Yes foleypro, if only something like that would happen we would be a much happier bunch of Brycers. 8) Catlin

foleypro ( ) posted Sat, 19 July 2003 at 9:24 AM

It only takes Money and time....But by the time Corel gets the Fist and elbow out of their Arse we will all have moved on...But just keep the ears and eyse peeled folks...I think i hear the wind blowing our way for once...Like they say Money talks BS walks...Anyone loan me 3 million and I will get a new Bryce6 out with user choices on the Plugins/Modules they want or need...Of course the more ya want the more it costs....Basic standard Bryce5 upgrade to Bryce6 would be just $99 but that is just the newer code and the same old Rendering engine and same Bryce5 stuff...How about a full library of Plants and bushes with Extra realistic trees $75...Now lets say that you decide to get my Effects Module $99...More money...More money ....It all boils down to money...Now before you say 3 Million I would need that just to Buy Bryce and hire the Programmers and modelers and Textures...Then getting CL to come up with a plugin available for Brycers would be the hard part tho...

brholte ( ) posted Mon, 21 July 2003 at 10:24 AM

Took a while, and by now I'm sure you;ve already figured out that it works great on '98............ lol, but I've finally got a reply from corel, when I emailed them with your question.......... their response.... "We never tested Bryce5 on windows 98." thats it. brholte

AgentSmith ( ) posted Mon, 21 July 2003 at 6:49 PM

What?! I find that extremely hard to believe. Bryce 5 came out two years ago, and Win 98 was still big on the scene...whatever, lol. AS
