Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Feb 03 12:46 am)
You could try a system where you have interchangable sets of Library folders. You'd need to name the folders for each library category - like, Poses - Project 01a, Project 01b - Characters - Project 01a, etc. Your next set would be Project 02a, etc. Then what you do is take out EVERY folder from the libraries, except the ones you want to work with, and store them in a dump folder. When you open poser, the only library folders it will show are the ones you left in. This is not a great solution. It's klunky and a bit of a PITA. Also, it means you'll be constantly moving stuff around on your HDD and so you'll have to defrag more often. But it's the only one I can think of. mac
Well to be frank that might work but thats alot of moving, heres what i do. I have 2 installations of poser. I use ne to pay around with (t has my huge runtime folder)then when i want to workon something specific,i put what i need in the fresh install poser andwhen im finished i clean it out. Beats moving folders areound and im always using a freh install. Just a thought. Also theres a poser organizer in the utilities (not freebie) section. Its on sale i think and it seems to work ok although i still like my system better.
It's a nightmare. Pure and simple. Whatever you try you're going to lose spontaneity. At the moment I can't put anyone/thing else in a scene with Vicky 3 without so much fussing that it's just been easier not to use her at all until I figure out how to re-arrange some stuff. Remember you can use Cameras, Faces, and Hands for other stuff as well (hands works for MAT files but not poses/morphs and answer 'right' hand, not 'left' when applying). DAZ Studio has library management far down on its list in terms of when to implement. Arggggghhhhhh.
If you need the space, it's handy ;-) I put most of my clothing textures in Hands. Body textures and faces in Faces. MATs for animals, figure props, and etceteras in Cameras. Having the Mats spread out in the libraries gives a bit more flexibility. It's just that I have libraries for V3 totally separate, same with Koshini, but Mike and Vicky and the Girls, their clothes and props and scenery stuff is all available at once. Except I have an Animal poses and Human figure poses and have to switch between them.
"It's a nightmare. Pure and simple." yup yup For me now I rename EVERYTHING. like; V2-name V3-name MG-name (mill girls) M-name ect ect... and if it's a mat file then it's V2-name-M after awhile all the V2 stuff ect is all in one place then multiple folders work like a breeze. but I allway make sure that ALL of any one product has the SAME name, so a year from now I can know what they go too.
I looked in the marketplace utilities and found the "Runtime Integrator" which looks great and would probably help me immensely, but I think it is only for Poser 5! Fooey! I'm thinking of creating a data base in something like Access so I know what I have and what it is under. Sometimes I have a folder with the name of the person who created the item and I have no idea what is in it until I open the folder and look, so I spend half my time looking around for things that I know I have. Has anyone else done something like a database, and if so, does it help? There's got to be a better way to organize this stuff. I wish I was a programmer so I could invent something....
well- way back when before the internet when BBS's were all there was. Zip's had inside them a small text file call file_id it allowed some databases to automaticly open and read that specific file- at the time it was fairly universal. But that was more then a decade ago. I allways thought that would be a GREAT thing to have for all this poser stuff :)
Another tip would be to prune away the dead wood in your Poser library. All the figure I use are made by DAZ, so I have no need for most of the figures, clothing, and poses that come with Poser 4.
A few months ago, I spent about 20 minutes going through my Runtime directories zipping up files that I will likely never use. Once zipped, Poser can't see them anymore, so it unclutters your libraries. Should I ever need to use an obsolete figure like the P4 nude woman I would simply unzip the zipped .cr2 that is sitting in my Librariescharater directory. So far, I have not needed to do this. Be careful about zipping the P4 casual male though, because I think Poser needs this file to open to its factory state.

I know this topic has been discussed before, but I'm going to bring it up again, in the hopes that maybe someone has found a better system. I am now getting a HUGE runtime folder. I have Pro Pack. I use PBoost (although I have to close down Poser to change banks) and I have a pretty good organization system down with that; however, that being said, I still seem to have a huge amount of stuff to wade through. And, sometimes, when I'm working on something, I have to close and open Poser a million times to switch banks because stuff is in different folders that I need to access and, sometimes, things that were in my picture (PZ3 file) disappear when I open Poser back up after switching. Anyway, has anybody found a better system? I know everyone has individual things that work for them, but I'm looking for input that might make it easier. It seems I remember someone posting something a while back about putting things on disks and then using that when they need it. All I know is that I need to do something because it is getting frustrating just to create a multiple figure and object picture. Thanks
