THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: WIP, no title, but could use some opinions please

OK I will have another go. This started life as an attempt at waterfalls and I just got carried away. Is it any good, and what can I do to improve it please. First image is the original bryce render and the 2nd is it after some postwork.

This is postworked to appear more painterly.

pretty good, with one small exception... the very last little puddle of water just before it going into the last waterfall seems to be a bit floaty... it's the texture that's giving that impression IMO... but great idea and awesome land textures :)

Well Chohole, I can't see anything wrong with either of them...they are both amazing. Sharen

Thanks draclaz, its one of the ones from the challenge. The texture I mean.

They both say something different to me. I love the sky and contrast in the first. And I like the rocks in the second. I love 'em both even if I'm not a painterlyer.

I think I prefer the second one. The greenery in the other is a little intense. There is something strange about the three central trees, especially the two on the right. They dont seem to sit right somehow. And it isnt clear where the water on the extreme right is actually going. Other than that, I think you`re on to an interesting image with this. Love the DoF.

I think the trees are copies of one tree...I'd make several different trees to solve this...if you rotated the copies or simply re-sized them we can still tell......(If they aren't copies, sorry) The waterfalls look great. I wish I could do this. Great stuff so far. The Bryster

I think they are both lovely, especially the second one, I like the faded, olden look it has. The trees maybe look too much alike, perhaps you could turn each of them a little to make them look different. Apart from that I think it's a good scene with lots of potential. 8) Catlin

I like both versions with what you have so far. Maybe add a few different types of trees.....some closer to the waters edge, and some taller grasses to help break up the waters edge. I've tried many times to get a waterfall in bryce....and they always end up on a speedy trip to the trash can, yours looks great! Looking forward to seeing your finished version :) Take care, Teri R

I like them both although I also think the greenery in the first needs to be toned down a little. I love the skys and the atmosphere. Ditto on the waterfalls.

the 2nd one is tops for me

I agree with Drac about the floaty look of the water. I like the scene a lot. Maybe a bit more variation in the colors of those people with the horses. The horses people and the clothes have very simular hues. As for the postwork. I'd make the colors in the foreground a bit more like the first version and keep the background like the second render. Maybe a bit more detailing on the rocks (some fractal blending in the TE or an extra bumpmap in the DTE) could make the image look even better. But then again it might not help at all. You could also try a bit highter res and draw some details like hair, grass, sand, little flowers etc. I'm no good at doing 2d painting myself and I don't know if you're good at drawing, but people like Hobbit have shown how much you can add to scenes like this with 2D painting in postwork.

I have nothing to add by way of critique, but I do think your waterfalls look great even sans touch-up. Modeling convincing water in Bryce(other than a lake, or pond) can be difficult, but you do it very well.

alvinylaya ( ) posted Fri, 08 August 2003 at 1:33 PM

I think I'd prefer somewhere between the first and the second. I pesonally prefer the sky in the first one cuz it's colorful, it really depends on what you want. If you want to lessen the color of the any item, use sponge tool in Photoshop, set mode: desaturate. Saturate if you want to increase the color intensity. If you feel the need to postwork the waterfalls, concentrate on the frontmost one. The "floaty look" should be easy to fix with postwork. Maybe a little mist in the bottom would help also. Overall I love the composition. Especially the little waterfalls behind the big one. Really well done. MHO

Beautiful, excellent waterfalls! I pretty much agree with whats been said and can't think of anything else to add. Very lovely work.

bikermouse ( ) posted Sat, 09 August 2003 at 1:12 AM

chohole, what alvinylaya, Q and Ang25 said. Also Duplicate the "floaty" object give it a more vertical scale and give it a volumetric cloud texture reducing ambience and base density for a mist. - TJ

I find you don't need any suggestions... I like them both, and a lot, but I must say that I prefer the second: the atmosphere is more charming.

Like both of them. Could use some flowers, nothing really detailed, not like you can see the details at this distance. Can throw together some flowers using primitives or metaballs or lattices. Check out landscape pictures to see how they do flowers. Want the illusion of flowers but you don't want them to steal focus or stand out too much. They have to look like they fit the picture.
