Subject: Poser 5 Question

OK, got my Poser 5 for Mac last night. Spent about 30 minutes going through the online manual and I can't for the life of me find how to get my Poser 4 libraries into Poser 5. Searched the forums but no luck (which is weird because I remember all you Windows users talking about this months ago) Of course, it was 2am and I could barely see the screen! So, how do I pull this magical trick off? Thanks.

go to the top hierarchy level by clicking on that "." button until you see "poser5" and "downloads". there click on the "+" (it says "add runtime").

Keep clicking the "up" folder icon in any of the libraries until you can go no further. Your library tab will then look like the one on the right. Now double click on the Poser 4 folder. The red dot indicates which Runtime you are in.

Hmm... do as aleks said, THEN as Phil said ;-) The Poser 4 runtime will not be visible until you add it by clicking on the little +

I'm glad I looked at this thread because I hadn't noticed that feature. I'm surprised that the Poser 5 manual didn't mention this in the installation section. The first thing that a Poser 4 user wants, after upgrading to Posr 5, is a means to bring in all the content that was bought and developed with 4. I tried looking in the index of the manual for a means to do this and couldn't find anything.

RReynolds, pages 124/125 tell you how to add libraries.

I didn't know about this tip, so I re-installed Vicki, Steph, and Mike into the fresh P5 runtime. I guess this means that if I now use the above tip, I'll end up with duplicates of my DAZ people. heh... looks like I'll be taking the opportunity of the Poser 5 Mac upgrade to clean out/re-organize my Runtime folder. (Lord knows it can stand some weeding out!)

No kidding Thor! Cleaning up the Runtime stuff is probably worth the upgrade alone. Although with over 15 gig, it's not going to be easy or quick! Thanks everyone for you help. Got some sleep and fixed up P5 and now I'm at the bottom of the learning curve! Again! What fun!

it does mention it in the manual .. just phrases it very weirdly. Pages 124-125, Adding and Switching Libraries

If I bring in the P4 Runtime, will I still be able to run Poser 4 or does it do weird stuff to the Runtime folder that P4 can't handle? (using a Mac, fwiw)

aleks ( ) posted Fri, 08 August 2003 at 1:32 PM

no, p5 has luckily no influence on p4 behaviour. except that you get a feeling that you previously owned a racing car. ;)

Clicking the "+" does nothing more than allow referencing another directory where Poser content can be found. There is nothing unique about the file structure and nothing is changed in the Poser 4 Runtime directory. This basically lets Poser 5 look into and use the content in Poser 4 as if it was installed for Poser 5. Page 124 isn't the best spot in the world to put this tip in the manual (and it's on 126 in mine) and it actually comes kind of late to learn it because I mostly reinstalled everything and have duplicate stuff in 4 and 5. Hopefully somebody at CL will consider putting this kind of info in the installation section, if the manual is upgraded or a new release goes out, because there aren't many people who will closely enough scrutinize a whole manual before using the program. I'll flip through new features and stuff when I upgrade a program and thumb through a manual to see if anything interesting catches my eye. When there's time, I'll read a manual cover to cover, but not when I first open the package. Even if a person read the manual thoroughly, it's not likely that person would have realized what that section meant. It doesn't quite come out and say that this is a way to read Poser 4 content. The manual talks about this feature as a means to store content in different drives and directories. Unless somebody has an immediate need to put things in different directories or drives, it's one of those features that's easy to forget about. It's obvious to me after reading the tip, but it would have saved me a lot of time had the manual mentioned this goodie up front.

and bear in mind that INJ-files have to be in p5 runtime folder, otherwise they won't work.

If you plan on retaining both installs, you might want to consider copying the P5 figure folders over into the P4 runtime tree. Don and Judy load in P4 just fine, and by having the obj in the P4 runtime, you can do set up in P5, save it, and use the export functions of P4 to get the figures into other apps like Vue. At least as long as you don't use file compression and dynamic anything....

Here's how its done on the PC version. I would assume the mac is similar.
