It's not that hard to figure out what should be mapped in what way when you think about the basic shape of your object. Stuff like your wineglass would definitely be some type of cylindrical mapping because it's basically cylindrical in overall shape. Pants legs, skirts, sleeves, torsos all are basically cylindrical. The trick sometimes is turning the model in the right direction so that the seams will be as inconspicuous as possible ;o). I would suggest that you don't split the map on your model so that it makes one wide template. That way you only have 1 seam, not 2. Laurie
Thanks for the tips, Laurie. I sure do apprecieate it. I'd like to try making clothing, but for now, I think making some simple props will sufice, until I get a bit better. 'The trick sometimes is turning the model in the right direction so that the seams will be as inconspicuous as possible' Re laurie's advice, You'll find that cylindrical cap has 3 options for the different axes, X, Y and Z. These axes are the same as in poser, so if your wineglass is vertical, you'd use the Y axis. Horizontal would be X and front to back is Z. It's probably better not to split the map, unless you want to texture the inside and outside differently. mac

I hope I'm posting this in the right forum! If not, please redirect me to the proper place. I wasn't sure if this belonged in the modeling or the Poser forum. I will post this in both places. After browsing through some messages on the modeling board, I decided to give wings 3d a try. I've never modeled before, but have tried it with other programs, and found wings to be pretty easy. I followed a tutorial on their web site to make a wine glass. I guess it doesn't look too bad... and I hope to improve, but what I'm questioning is this: I know how to make a UV map with UV mapper. I've done this to get my maps so that I can make textures in the past. I exported this as a wavefront object and saved it, then opened it in UVmapper. It doesn't come up with a map, and tells me to create one. First of all, which is better for creating the map? Planar or box style? Secondly, should I be changing the size of the map? I guess that's it for now. I'll try not to pester you too much :) Thanks in advance for any help you can give!
