Does anyone have a problem logging onto our website? If any of you have a minute to check this for me and reply I would greatly appreciate it. Tom and I can get on just fine, but there is someone who can't log on through Google, a direct link, or straight log on. We're stumped! ? ? ? Thanks for your help! Cheers! Pam

I can get on now Pam.....had problems a few hours ago, but not now.

Pamola ( ) posted Sun, 10 August 2003 at 1:38 PM

Hmmm, Wonder what's up?

sandoppe ( ) posted Sun, 10 August 2003 at 1:47 PM

Cherokee69 is the one who seems to be having the most trouble. She/he did a trace and there was a 100% packet loss about the time I was having my problem. When I clicked on your link, I got no error message....just white space. I was concerned that your server or your ISP's server might be going in the dumpster. But now I can access your site fine. There's a "pothole" somewhere on the information highway! :)

LOL :) Never heard that term but I like it!

Gratzi, all. I'm certainly glad to hear this, but we are stil getting an error message (shows up down in the status bar) on our Home Page. Anyone know what that's about? Can anyone look at it maybe (our source code or something) to try to see what the problem is? Thanks! pg

Sydney_Andrews ( ) posted Sun, 10 August 2003 at 4:44 PM

Hello,

I looked at your site, and the error is EXw is undefined Its been a while since I played in HTML-land, but I think that has something to do with the objects being defined in javascript.

script language="javascript">
EXd=document;EXw?"":EXw="na";EXb?"":EXb="na";
EXd.write("img src="http://t0.extreme-dm.com",
"/0.gif?tag=iw43d&j=y&srw="+EXw+"&srb="+EXb+"&",
"l="+escape(EXd.referrer)+"" height=1 width=1>");//-->

What was the purpose of this script in the site? Perhaps you can ask whomever did the programming what the function of this was. That could lead to an answer.

Other than that, I accessed your site with no problems with IE6 on a pc, 10 August 2003, 17:40 EST

Regards

Thank Echo871! I know what it is now... Our web (hits, et al.) tracking. It shouldn't be giving our home page an error though. We built our site.. that's why I was so puzzled. I will have to investigate further, now that I know where the problem lies. Thanks for your help! That's exactly what I needed to know. Cheers! Pam

sandoppe ( ) posted Sun, 10 August 2003 at 8:58 PM

I'm here! :) Not much consolation I'm sure! I am now able to access their site again. It's very strange indeed. I don't think they are sure what's going on either. Have you checked with your ISP? There's obviously a line down somewhere between your DSL connection in North Carolina and their site. It may be that your ISP has heard something. If a line is down then there have to be other sites affected as well. Maybe you've done all this already. It's really a mystery. I'm sure Pam will get the DC3 to you one way or another.....she's pretty tenacious :)

Great to hear Cherokee! I had written a note to post last night when I got home (After I resent your download info.) but I found that I no longer had the basic (but crucial)cut/copy and paste function. It seems to be non-existent on my OS.

I immediately went to my Norton Anti Virus program to download live update to scan my system for a potential virus/worm (which I do AT LEAST every Friday when I do a full virus scan) but got an error message: "LU1803 unable to dowload at this time".

I then went into my e-mail and was unable to send or EVEN CREATE a mail doc. All I got was an error message: "not enough memory". (NOT Virtual Memory, mind you.. MEMORY!) Since I had nothing else open on my system but OE6, I knew that was impossible. So...

Since my hard disk is getting pretty close to it's full capacity, I thought I might do a little house cleaning then at least defrag my system (which I do about every 1-2 weeks.) Well, when I went to my Program Manager to see what I might be able to live without (remove) it opened a big empty box for me! Isn't that special? All my programs are still on my system, I'm just not able to uninstall anything. The first sign or weridness started yesterday. I got an error message that I'd NEVER SEEN before, and that was not specific to any program I happened to be in, OR EVEN KNOW OF! This occurred periodically throughot the day, but was very random. It didn't matter if I was in Photoshop, MS Word, OE6 e-mail, it just showed up and read: svc host.exe has generated errors and will be shut down. It didn't always necessarily shut down the program I was in either. But the thing that bothers me most about it is that I have no idea what svc host even is?!?!? Anyone know? It feels like a virus to me, reminiscent of the Klez virus I got a long time ago.... so I'm freaking out a little. I can't even get anything to download from the Symantec site, nor can I give an accurate report to Symantec since the form they have you fill out has drop down menus to select from and ALL of these boxes are blank! I'm hitting a wall with every turn.

I was able to run a chkdsk /f from the dos promt... and that helped. For about 5 minutes I was at least able to cut and paste. But that soon went away.

I'd appreciate ANY info that might help me here. I'm feeling a little crippled and I don't get it"... I'm so good about "wearing protection"! ;(

Thanks Guys!
Pam

You don't by any chance have a Dell, and do the Dell auto updates, do you? My fiance came home from work today and said that a virus was transmitted through the auto update and it brought several of the computers down there.

Pamola ( ) posted Mon, 11 August 2003 at 10:38 PM

No, I don't have a Dell. But what a bummer about THAT deal, huh? Ya' just can't trust anything these days... and why I fuly understood when people were nervous about our whether or not our server was secure. All is well there, but I completely understood their concerns. Wish me luck! Pam I just this minute got that svc host.exe has generated errors and will be shut down message.... just this minute. :( Phooey!

sandoppe ( ) posted Mon, 11 August 2003 at 11:00 PM

It does indeed sound like a virus. Svc. on XP means "switched virtual circuit" and is related to your network. There is a relatively new backdoor trojan, with a variety of aliases, that may fit your description. Here's some info that I collected from McAfee: Backdoor.Fxsvc (AVP) Troj/Fxsvc (Sophos) Backdoor-AQK: There are several variants of this trojan, and the specific actions taken are decided by the hacker who uses this trojan, so this description is a general guide. "This trojan is a remote access trojan. It targets NT/XP/2000 machines. When run with a command line switch, it installs itself as a service. The service is set to automatic start at system start up. One of the following service names might be used: Windows Help Manager fxSVC Once running on the victim machine, it opens port 33 or 34 and listens on the port. The hacker is able to connect (and administer that machine). The trojan can perform the following activities: System information gathering. Network scanning. SQL server related activities. Symptoms Existence of the service name mentioned above. Unusual/unexpected ports open on machine. (For this trojan, by default this is port 33 or 34). Unusual behavior on victim machine, explainable by unauthorized remote administration." This information on this virus was found at Symantec's site: "Backdoor.Fxsvc is a Backdoor Trojan Horse that gives its author access to your computer. The Trojan is written in Borland Delphi and is packed with UPX. When Backdoor.Fxsvc is executed, it opens a port that gives the Trojan's creator unauthorized access to the infected computer. The Trojan drops server.ini that provides configuration settings, including opening port 34, by default. One of the payloads allows the Trojan's author to remotely shut down the compromised computer." There are more instructions at Symantec for this virus, based on your OS. Plus if you can access the web, and have a subscription to Norton, you should be able to download the virus definitions from their site. If noone else has done so, I'll copy and past your message into the Poser forum. If there's anything else I can do, let me know.

Hey Pam, you got broadband or dial up? If you have broad band, do you have one of these little firewall routers? If not, you are probably being beaten to death with this new worm, and possibly even infected with it. I would check www.norton.com or www.mcafee.com for an online virus scanner for recent problems. If you find you've been infected and are on broadband, buy a router + firewall, it'll save your #$#$...not perfect, but pretty damned close! eric

Pamola ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 12:54 AM

You're a STUS, Sandoppe! That sounds EXACTLY like what it wrong with my sustem and makes complete sense and is right in line with the quirky (CRIPPLING, actually) things I am experiencing. I was just in my Program Manager a minute ago and noticed at the bottom of the page (where all of my programs USED TO TO BE LISTED but have now been replaced with a big empty white space in that box, as I mentioned previously) that the Close button now reads: Cl&ose. Hmmmm, NOT GOOD! THANK YOU SO MUCH for taking the time to help me and explain all of this. I DO have Symantec Norton 2003 and a year subscription but am unable to accessor download. FOrtunately, I have the disk and will reinstall it but I don't know if this will be a remedy if I can't get the most recent update. I better just go read how to clean this.. but I'd sure like to kow which one I have. These sadistic people who create these things are terrorists, aren't they. What could make a person angry enough to be this vicious... what's more scary is how many there are out there! It's not like it's a a small handful of people creating thewe things out there. And it's not like I'm MCI Worldcom, ya' know? We're just a tiny company who has been making 3D stuff for a living for the past decade. Oh well. In any event, I need to find out how to Pamenate the darned thing now and it's a tricky task when I can't access any downloadable updates. Sandoppe, You are so kind to take the time to help me out here. I REALLY APPRECIATE IT (You'll see, Mister!) But do you have any idea how I could go about checking those portals (33 & 34) you mention to see what's going on? This is getting into a technical area that I know very little about. The knowlege base of so many people here on these forums just blows me away sometimes. Whenever I encounter a problem in an area I know NOTHING about, I "own up!" Better that than to "Remove all doubt". Another old adage I believe in is "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing"... so since I am in that area right now, I figured it might be best to come to where I know I can get some solid information. You certainly seem knowledgable/well versed in this arena. Hopefully this knowledge was derived through reading about it rather than first hand experience. ;/ Okay, I just tried to re-install my Norton 2003 disk and the Windows Installer is disabled. I can't download even teh virus defsinitions, let alone a patch or update toclean whatever it is I have. I can't even reinstall my AV program! This is all too reminiscent of what I went through with that Klez virus/worm a year and a half I got. These guys think of EVERYTHING!!! Terrorists, I swear to God! I'll keep you posted. Thanks again. Pam

I know! I really need a router and firewall BADLY. Tom's just crapped out and he's a nervous wreck now that I have this thing. Can't blame him, but I told him to start updating his back-up just in case. I am stuck though since I am unable to install or download anything from the Borton site. I'll have to call Symantec tomorrow. (Wonder what that will cost!?) I have a year subscription with Norton, but calls regarding infected systems are not free. :( Just when we though we could keep our Poser models prices low! (Kidding! lol ;) XO-All! Pam Thanks you guys. How about that luck of mine, huh? G'night! Pam

Who is Borton?! HaHaHa

sandoppe ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 1:46 AM

The first thing I would suggest is: take a deep breath and have a beer/glass of wine/whatever :) Mamba-negra is right....a firewall of some kind is a must. I don't have a router as I'm not on a network, but do have Norton Security and use the firewall that comes with that. I got it when I switched from dialup to DSL. When your connection is on all the time, a firewall of some kind is a must have. I get "attack attempts" once a week by these "trojan perpetrators". Most of the stuff that I posted Pam is direct from either the McAfee or Symantec site. I'm actually not that knowledgeable.....just know where to find stuff when something is wrong :) If you can get to their web site, you should be able to download the virus definitions. Here's a link to the page that explains how to do it: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/1998082013035306 If your computer cannot access the internet any longer, get on another and follow the "multiple file intelligent updater" instructions. Then go to this page: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/backdoor.fxsvc.html Here you will find out what to do after you've updated your virus definitions based on your operating system. There are also some pointers for steps you can take to prevent this from happening again....in addition to getting Norton Security or some other firewall. When it was time to update my Norton Antivirus, I purchased Norton Internet Security 2003. That includes the virus protection, firewall, etc. It only cost about $59. I've been very pleased with it. This would certainly be better than not having anything and might be a bit cheaper than some other options. The really nice thing is that you don't need to know squat about port 33, 34 or any other "port".....set the firewall to "default" and Norton covers your arse! :) Finally....just so you know....I'm a female! ROFL!

More information Pam! I posted your message at the Poser forum and both Lovelylady and Machineclaw have been experiencing similar issues. Go to that thread (link above) and read what they have to say. This looks like the fix you need. MachineClaw provides a link for the fix.
