Subject: Exporting Victoria 3 to 3DS, Improper file format?!

Hey guys got a question... I have Victoria 3.0 and I work in poser but most post production in 3ds max 4 and then photoshop... I went to export Vic and it exported to a 3ds but then when I tried to import it into max it said Improper File format.. It did this with all the victoria's that came with the vic 3.0 base.. Mike and all the props etc I tested exported and loaded in fine.. What is wrong with my victoria. If anyone knows any tricks let me know.. Perhaps an obj to 3ds converter with the option to retain bodypart groups. Even though it should work it doesn't so maybe an obj to 3ds converter is my only choice? I tried reinstalling vic and poser and nothing but the same.. Hmm that is about all I can post about the error =P

This may sound kinda silly (and I don't use Max), but try loading the .3DS file back into Poser and then if it loads OK, reexporting. I don't know why but sometimes this works. If you're still having problems I'd give DAZ tech support a try. HTH; Dan

I did e-mail Daz about it still no reply.. Hmm if I try to reload it into poser I get an error saying Error in Plugin 'FF3ds.arp' perhaps that is the 3ds file exporter and importer.. But then again if it was that, then how would it only give me those errors with vicky exported to 3ds and not any other poser model???.. confused..

Damn, this happened to me too but with Don, and I didn't see this thread before I posted my own question (see above). And I did a search of the forum and all. :-)

I would export as on .obj file, I have never had any problems with that, but I too get the "improper file format" with .3ds files. You can get the free obj2max plugin at the link above.

yeah thanks for the link Karen it works, minus a few things I gotta figure out like smoothing and such.. What about textures though.. I know for max I am going to have to UUV map the wings or whatever, so am I going to have to uvvunwrap and then redo the whole texture, or is there a way to import the mapping coords, anyone know?

Check this link. It's a long thread that explains everything regarding max and poser.
