I made this old style crossbow to go with my Rogue Archer textures (see link). But once I built it, I realized I did not really know how people actualy held the darn things. Can anyone point me to some reference pics of people holding this properly? I need to parent it to one hand and create a hand pose for it.

Please note that this is the OLD style crossbow, without the pistol grip or rifle butt. The end is more like a long stick.

I would also appreciate any feedback about whether people like this style to go with the Rogue Archer set, or if a more modern style would be preferable (please note that the textures shown here are not final)

Thanks.

The picture Diane posted is a very typical one. Notice how far back along the stock the right hand is. That's because until the trigger mechanism became a lot more complicated late in the developement of the weapon, a long key (ie trigger) was needed to provide enough leverage for the shooter's hand to overcome the sheer force between the front of the key and the rotating release nut. In other words, the key on your model should really be a lot longer, coming back to about four finger widths away from the butt of the stock. The shooting pose is very similar to that for shooting a rifle. Left hand supports the weapon, with left elbow tucked down. The butt goes into the hollow of the right shoulder and the head comes down to sight along the quarrel. The big difference is that the right hand has to come right back toward the hollow of the shoulder and that forces the right elbow up in the air.

No worries. It's a shame I don't have a digital camera or a scanner - I'd grab a few pics from my books and post them for you. I've got lots of books on the history of bows and crossbows and there are quite a few old paintings that show the shooting pose.
