Subject: DAZ and that freakin' Platinum Club

Milla ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 10:00 AM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 7:14 AM

Thought: I wonder how long it will be before DAZ stops having sales for regular customers and only offers the free item of the week to their Platinum Club members? This always happens when stores start doing their "club membership" crap. Regular customers who refuse to be part of "clubs" get screwed. This must be why stores decided to drop the "pay-me-for-benefits" fee and just started making everyone a club member. It used to be that clubs were created for marketing research to find out what a customer buys the most frequently. Now they've just become another way to make someone do something they don't want to do. Sorry.. just venting.

Well in my opinion, being a Platinum Club member hasn't been that great either. I've been a member for about two months now and I've pretty much purchased everything I liked (which wasn't that much) and it seems there hasn't been anything NEW for quite awhile. I saw someone ranting a few posts down about all the low quality items coming out in the Renderosity store, well at least Renderosity has a steady stream of new items, I'm getting really tired of seeing the same old things at DAZ. The big question is, why am I paying a monthly fee to be in the Platinum club when theres nothing new to buy?????

Puntomaus ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 10:44 AM

Usually you get at least one or two new items in the PC per week, some weeks it's even more but nowhere did they promise a new item per day. And you have to remember that the items are quality items and it takes some time to produce them. They are not wizards, there are humans working on this stuff.

I figure they're all working on the three big projects right now: M3, MCat, and Studio. I know they'd love to have more 3rd party vendors sell stuff through them. Even their usual 3rd party vendors are working on the new product lines. I expect when M3 and Studio come out, there will be a ton of new stuff in all the different areas. It's just a slow period until September. Then they'll go crazy with new releases through Christmas.

I can not speak for anyone else but at the moment I have several projects in the works, and except for one..they will all be released around the same time ;-) .. they just can not be released yet. Laurie who is dancing as fast as she can ;-)

Hmm, kinda busy in all directions. I was making some things, but the Cat had to take center stage again. You know how cats are...

Take your time Laurie and Michael. I can wait for YOUR stuff (but it ain't easy....LOL). I know it'll all be great when it's finished :o) Laurie

There's been no indication that DAZ is going to change their freebie policy. I'm positive that they know that such a change would be offensive to non-PC members, and thus, bad biz. While RDNA and PoserPros have developed fantastic low-price, high-quality lines, you don't have to pay a club fee to buy those inexpensive items, and their freebies are still free for all. I'm not sure what you're talking about when you say "This always happens when stores start doing their 'club membership' crap," Milla. What stores? Where in the Poser market? Did you think to write to DAZ first, and ask if the scenario you fear has a chance of occurring? I'm not against venting, it's just that the thing you're venting about hasn't happened. Let's not forget that they don't owe anyone a freebie. I get frustrated with Platinum Club too sometimes, but that's only because I want what I want, and do recognize that in perspective. The 30% discount on non-brokered items will be a great thing when M3 comes out.

LaurieA ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 12:13 PM

"You can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time". Don't remember who said that, but it holds true. While there have been "dry" weeks at the Platinum Club, overall I've been very pleased with my membership. And I doubt highly that they'll change their freebie policy ;o). Laurie

Milla ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 1:01 PM

XOCONOSTLE: My argument is based purely on assumption, and as such, has no true validity other than to state the "possibility" of it happening. The only reason I mention this is because everywhere I look I see ads stating that if you're a PC member you will get 30% off of M3 when he arrives. I've not seen one remark on whether or not non-pc members will get any kind of a sale. Prior to this whole PC mess beginning, everyone benefited(sp?) from sales on introductory products. I have a feeling that come M3, DAZ is going to use that release as a kicker to get more people to sign up with their PC membership. Perhaps I'm wrong, hopefully, I am.

RHaseltine ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 1:12 PM

You get 30% off for PC membership on DAZ originals, then any introductory discount comes off that, so 30%+30%=51%, 30%+25%=47.5% and so on. There's no knowing what DAZ will do, but I doubt they'll suddenly decide to skip an intro sale for M3.

ChuckEvans ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 1:13 PM

I thought it was, "You can please all the people some of the time and some of the people all the time but you can't please all the people all the time." Ahhhh, who knows. But in this case, it looks like you can't please some of the people any of the time. All that comes to mind to me is: If you think you're getting screwed by not joining the PC, then, well.....JOIN (and stop getting screwed)! Fairly simple in my book.

RHaseltine ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 1:31 PM

The quote (with "fool" instead of "please") is from Abraham Lincoln (US politician, I believe) or P T Barnum (ditto ;).

xoconostle ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 1:43 PM

OK, Milla, no prob, I appreciate the response. I've sure been known to vent about things here, and I'm not against it. I hope DAZ doesn't make their freebies exclusive, either. :-)

DAZ has no intention of discontinuing their introductory discount policy or their free product for non PC members, though they do have a number of things in the works to make the pc club much more worthwhile and exciting. In fact they just started a new gallery for PC members. it sounds like an interesting proposition, here is the info that Steve Kondris posted in the contest gallery.

whbos ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 2:52 PM

They haven't had anything new (or useful) in the Platinum Club for months now except that damn Koshini. I think it would be nice for those of us not interested in doll-looking figures to have other items to choose from. The Platinum Club has turned into the Texture Club because that's all they've been selling lately. They do have great textures and I'm not knocking them, but what about a few more clothing models once in a while especially for Mike who has been ignored pretty much since he came out.

MallenLane ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 3:08 PM

I could make a lot of clothes, without morphs. But I don't think you'd appreciate that very much? The morphs take literally forever to put into the clothing. That's a major reason why "Koshini immediately had a better selection of clothing".

MallenLane ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 3:09 PM

Doh, you removed your post. ;)

Spit ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 3:39 PM

whbos...Koshini is NOT in Platinum. Never has been and there is not one item for her in Platinum either. Sheesh. At least get your facts right before spouting. I'm not planning on getting M3. I loaded up on stuff for Mike 2 during the sale. And I'm sure that for at least a while Platinum will be almost exclusively for M3 stuff (like it's been for V3). I don't even use V3 that much. But I'm still glad I'm a member and plan to renew. Because there ARE other things that go in there. And they're always killer. And the discount is great. MY WISH FOR DAZ is that they have more sales on brokered stuff. Once a year is pretty lame.

rreynolds ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 4:51 PM

The 30% off of DAZ original stuff is nice, but it seems like the premier store is maybe only 10-20% originals (or may seem that way based on what I was looking for) and the bulk of the stuff I wanted was brokered. Ditto with the $5 voucher that's only good on DAZ originals. A gallery is nice, but not a big deal because there's loads of galleries to display photos, including here. First looks at new products are no big deal. "Sneak peaks" here, by merchants, hasn't been welcomed. The members only forum will only be as good as the people who participate and there's a lot of that here. I've only been a member for a few weeks and the starting offers were great between the 45 items kicked in and the sale on everything. I'm not sure how long I'll remain a member if there isn't much in the way of new itesm. I'm curious whether the low PC price might not be more profitable on items than a listing in the premier store. If, as DAZ said in the offer, there are thousands of Platinum Club members, any new item could generate a signficant amount of revenues because of the low cost. A person really has to want an item to pay $30 and more. At $2, they're much more attractive. I know I'm at least willing to stock up more on low cost items I want and hold off getting the higher cost ones till I have a more definite need for them.

Phantast ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 5:46 PM

At the moment, a continuing monthly membership is not looking good value. Most of the new additions lately have been dull. A new gallery? Oh, whoopee. On the other hand, I signed up at the beginning of the PC regime and definitely had my money's worth and more very quickly. Maybe the thing is to sign up for one month in six and stock up on the backlog?

MallenLane ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 5:58 PM

What exactly do you find "exciting".

Jim Burton ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 6:20 PM

ML- "The morphs take literally forever to put into the clothing" Exactly right!- People have no idea what is involved in doing clothing, you see 'em flouting stuff they made in Rhino, which looks great, don't get me wrong, but that is only about 1/3 the job- the stuff needs seams, and wrinkles, and UV mapping, and textures, and morphs, both to match the figure's and JCM ones now, Oh, the agony of the morphs! Plus if the garment is non-symetrical you set to do most of the morphs twice! (Sorry about the complaining!) Anyway, I've done a couple Free-Stuff items for DAZ, mine will not be Platinum Club only in the future.

ChuckEvans ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 6:26 PM

I hear ya Jim! Heck, even if I ever DID try some modeling, I'd stick to buildings (you know...mostly square and no conforming...grin)

Momcat ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 9:40 PM

::holds head in pain:: I am so sick and tired of this prevailing attitude amongst...too many people (not just the Poser community), that the world somehow owes them something. Guess what? The big bad world doesn't owe you a G** D*** thing. If you don't like the deal being offered, don't take it. Simple as that. Nobody is twisting your arm, forcing you to buy things. ::wanders off muttering to herself about haircuts, jobs, and a days work for a days pay while shaking her head::

It took me 8 hours to get home from Manhattan yesterday. If you want to hear about the whole horrible experience, you can visit PoserPros, in General, topic being "Trapped in Manhattan". So if I come across as bitchy today, well!! In the interim, if you don't like a Poser product, simply don't buy it. As Momcat said, one is not 'owed' anything. I too have just about had it!!! with all of the speculative crap that has been going on. Do you not realize the potential for damage? I'm not just talking careers, but between this thread and the one putting down amateur store vendors (hello, we were ALL newbies once) and a few others, I'm surprised all of the new blood doesn't just flat out run away from these forums. All of this useless negativity... use the energy and create art rather than rumors over things that we just don't know. Ah hell, I think I need a vacation from Renderosity.

I have loved my PC membership, I got great items at super prices; in fact I think it started a trend in most stores to offer a "club" type discount which has benefitted everyone who "collects" their poser stuff. I basically appreciate the entire policy to offer great stuff at reasonable prices, and they have lots of stuff to choose from...I have tried myself to learn how to do all that work and quite frankly the vendors put a lot of work into the products ....I guess those who are not happy could always build their own stuffage....but for most of us we do not have the time to build our own stuff so I am most happy with the entire concept of quality for reasonable prices. I also appreciate the new technology as it is being developed, V3 is a great model....if they can make a M3 that is just as versitile I am all for it...if they can make it easier to make more stuff yippee ....but most of all we are "listened" to...and it is important to realize that offhanded comments that sometimes come off as being rather negative are part of market feedback as well....in balance I hope that those putting all that work into these great products are not put off by the comments...I for one check out the store a lot at daz....I am sure there are others who can't wait for the new stuff....some I am going to buy now and some I am sure I will get later....with the new store policies for pricing I am most pleased because it means I can always jump in on a sale and catch up.... thank you Daz...thank you great vendors!...thank you

It's not that many weeks since the butterfly top, t-shirt, cocktail dress and starlet dress appeared in PClub. I may (do) moan about some of their priorities (trousers! shirt!) but the PC continues to offer mesh as well as textures.

Phantast ( ) posted Sat, 16 August 2003 at 4:33 PM

Well, you know, most people, if they don't like a deal - they WON'T take it. No reason why they shouldn't still complain about it if they think it isn't fair. Freedom of speech 'n' all that. Personally, I'm not complaining. What I paid for annual membership was good value.
