Hi I would like to know which file cannot be given from Zygote models or Poser CD models. I do not want to make a mistake if I post something. When I download from RENDEROSITY, i usually get a CR2 and RSR files and from Poser, I also get those two files. WHich one is copyright and cannot be given?

cr2 & rsr files are fine to distribute... obj files, unless they have been encoded to .pcf (with objaction), are not. The best rule of thumb to follow is that if the file requires that you already own the original model/software to use it it's ok.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's OK to post PZ3 files, too, right? Because you have to already have the original OBJ in order to access it. Melanie

pz3 are fine provided there are no copyrighted items included in them (imported props get written into the pz3 just like they do in cr2s). All a pz3 is, is an enhanced cr2 with camera, lighting, window size, display & render settings... Library rsr files are fine as well (they're just images). Geometry rsr however are not (they are binary equivelents to obj). Zygote cr2s also include morphs that are copyrighted. For that reason, their cr2s cannot be distributed. This includes pz3s that contain Zygote figures/props/hair...etc. -Rob

Rob - You may want to clarify that last paragraph a little. Since all native Poser4 figures are by Zygote, you're statement seems to say that NO Poser4 figures/props/hair can be included in .pz3s. If that's the case. we've all been violating their copyrights for quite a while. ;-) Actually Zygote's MTs became a non-issue long ago. Since you can't use their MTs without the original figure, they gave permission to include them in .pz3s for distribution. As to the figures, the figure itself isn't included, just a reference to the figure so there isn't a problem. As a thought, it maybe worthwhile for Zygote to put an addenda to their use statement that specifically outlines the permissions that they published to the PFO some time ago. It certainly would make it easier when questions like this one are asked.

Thanks for pointing that out Bushi... sometimes things become so common place (in one's mind) they tend to get overlooked when typing. What I should have said was that it applied to any individually bought items from the online store. The reason I say this about MT's is that, some figures spawned from others, come with MT's that are not provided with all variations of the base figure... making that particular MT a "feature" of the sold figure. If those MT's are allowed to be redistributed, they are no longer a "feature"... thus making the original less marketable. "Why should I buy (insert figure name) because of the cool morphs, when I can d/l it in so-n-so's (insert figure name)?" Your correct about figures, except in the case of importing the model as a prop and saving it in the cr2/pz3, of which contains the joint info... easily bypassing the need for obj. Groups and materials are retained in the cr2/pz3 and easily exported (with no world tranformations) to result in an obj named as the original... Food for thought... In regard to the addendum... I will mention it to Chad when I talk to him next (either Sun or Mon). -Rob

Thanks for all those answers but I am still very confuse. Correct me If am wrong, but when I buy a model from zygote per example, it includes a OBJ and CR2 and RSR. WHat I understand a RSR can be reproduced by Poser so it is like an image. So if I change a figure, I believe that the CR2 get changed and this is what we downloaded from this site. My understanding is that maybe the OBJ is the original file and get never changed. Is it right? What is included in PZ3 (OBJ? RSR? CR2?) Thanks for taking time to answer me.

Rob - Hadn't even thought about importing a figure as a prop. You're quite right on that since the vertices would appear in the .pz3. It WOULD then be possible to export the figure back out as a .obj file. That would be be pretty sneaky though. grins Niterueg - The point about the large .rsr file (there are two flavors on a PC) is that it is a compressed version of the .obj file. The .obj is the original mesh of the model. It doesn't change unless you take it into a 3D modeling program and manipulate it some how.

Sneaky?... yes. Possible?.. very. Should be considered when establishing policy?... absolutely. I don't believe most people would be so inclined to slither through the cracks... but you never know. Leave a rock unturned and expect to be bitten by the snake hiding under it. -Rob
