Subject: A Possible Solution to the "Popularity Problem"

ph0enixx ( ) posted Tue, 19 August 2003 at 6:28 PM · edited Sun, 03 November 2024 at 3:20 PM

As reading all the recent posts in the Poser forum regarding a popularity/cliqueish type vibe that has been a lingering program here at 'osity. Now, personally, I don't really have too much of a problem with it. I post my images for myself not to be commented on, comments are just an added plus for me. I read a lot of post that noted the Hot20 was a place they visited often, yada yada yada....but it's hard for new faces to get in the Hot20. So would it be possible to create two Hot20s? One Hot20 would be for artists who have been in the Hot20 several times before, the more popular artists here. The other would be of the less well known/new names artists here. Both Hot 20's could be on the same page, perhaps just add another column to the existing page. This way when going to the Hot20 you would see BOTH 20's, thus getting traffic to the New Arist20. As well...after your image appears in the New Artist 20 so many times...your name will be added to the other Hot20. Just my 2 cents. I'm not sure how easy/complicated it would be to take action on this plan. :)

Hi phOenixx :)

Thanks for your input!

Please check out the "New" Forum Communities.
[second Drop-Down-Menu on the top of the sidebar - just scroll to find your fav. Forum]
We are using these pages to post images from "artists" U may not know but would like 2 get 2 know :)

Again - I have to stress that the Communities are new, so be patient with us as we are in the early stages of development :)

Also, in the Poser Forum, the Mods have created a Moderator Pick of the Week thread - which will feature a variety of artists, which will change from week 2 week :)

I know that I am as much as fault as anyone - I see an image I really like, and if I have time I post a comment, but I almost always forget to click the Vote button. If more people would remember to click the Vote for this image button, then I believe we would have a larger variety of members in the Hot 20 :) ladynimue

Please don't take this as a lack of gratitude for the efforts being made, but I'm curious why the "featured fractal image" on the fractal community page is a Poser figure, posted April 3, 2001 to the Poser Gallery. The artist in question has never posted anything to the Fractal Gallery (a look at his personal gallery reveals gallery postings are exclusively to the 2D and Poser galleries). For that matter, I'm also curious about why there are Hot Product ads and links for Poser props on the fractal community page since ad banners already adorn the top of each and every single page here and the Marketplace links are readily visible to anyone who's interested. I know this site is Poser-heavy, but it seems strange to deliberately create non-Poser sub-communities and then select Poser images and products to represent them. There are dozens of fractal artists posting here in a wide variety of styles and using a broad range of software, there are hundreds of fractal images archived here from which to choose a "featured fractal image", so I'm a little baffled by the choices made in this case.

uh huh, what mintyfresh said... even considering that the communities are new, and a great idea if they ever come to full fruition, a teensy bit of effort there and you could have at least had an image by an artist who has posted at least once to the fractal gallery... i think the communities are a worthwile idea, it would be a shame to turn people off them because maybe they were implemented before they were ready... there are so many features on this site that you can't help but find a couple that you don't like or will never use so after looking at them once or twice you just never go back... i'm making no sense, am i laughing well, I know what i'm trying to say, i'm just verbally handicapped

Some of the forums only have one moderator. When that individual is unable to be "on board" (and we know no one could be on the forums 24 hours a day), the forum can easily go astray (the fractal forum being on my mind as well). I don't think it would be a bad idea to have more than one person able to update the community page so that it doesn't happen that a Poser figure shows up on a fractal community page (I agree...it's not even a good Poser figure). Poser has three moderators (which it needs because of volume) but that's an exception, is it not, rather than a rule. As for the popularity thing. I gave up on looking at the Hot 20 a long time ago. In high school, there were the cheerleaders and football stars; here we have the Hot 20. I was never a cheerleader and I'll never be a Hot 20. Popularity contests are for beauty queens.

I also think the main problem is the forgetting to click the vote button. There are some wonderful artists who seldom if ever get in the Hot20. They get plenty of comments, but don't get voted to the top. We all should just remember to vote if we really like an image. I'm not convinced that the Hot20 is all about popularity. I think it has more to do with a handful of people having multiple accounts and voting themselves and their friends into the top. It's pretty obvious when you see images there that are obviously substandard. Sorry if this opens a can of worms, but it has bothered me for awhile and just HAD to say it. LOL

My idea of rebooting is kicking somebody in the butt twice!

  1. The Random Image in the Fractal Community has been changed :) 2. The programmers are working on the random MarketPlace ads [right now they are rotated like the MP banners]. Thanks everyone for your patience and understanding as we work out the kinks to this new and fun Community Feature :) Hey Rockets you made some very valid points - and if you want, I will go fishing with you any day, as long as you put the worms on the hooks ;] ladynimue

With the issue of people using several differnt account names, to vote them selves into the Poser top 20! I belive that all they are doing is decieving them selves. Now I have an issue to bring up, there are several people who share the same internet access, (meaning that one computer connects to the net using a lan network). I belive that if the issue of "blocking" people with several different accounts is brought forth, wouldn't that mean that one member wouldn't be able to post immages and so forth!? I ask, as my father has an account (Havok1) and so do I. However I don't want him using my account as he has the tendancy the screw things up! (and I dont want my gallery to be screwed around with)! He doen't post anything, or even go into the chat, he just looks at the images. In other words, I think things are great the way they are, dont change a thing! And I also wanna tell those that do vote for them selves, to stop deceiving them selves and get a life, cheating wont help you improve.
